UN says four staff wounded in south Lebanon blast
BEIRUT: United Nations peacekeepers said three military observers and a translator were wounded Saturday in a blast in southern Lebanon, where Israel and Hezbollah militants trade frequent cross-border fire.
The military observers, from Australia, Chile and Norway, and a Lebanese language assistant had been on foot patrol around the so-called Blue Line — the UN-demarcated border between Israel and Lebanon.
The four “were injured when an explosion occurred near their location”, according to Andrea Tenenti, a spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.
The personnel were working for the UN Truce Supervision Organization, which supports the UN peacekeeping force.
They were “evacuated for medical treatment” and were in a stable condition, Tenenti said, adding the United Nations was “investigating the origin of the explosion”.
Israel and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah have exchanged near-daily fire since Palestinian militant group Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, triggering war in Gaza.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported an “enemy (Israeli) drone” raided the Rmeish area of southern Lebanon where the incident is said to have occurred.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned what he called a “dangerous incident”, while his foreign ministry said the attack was “in violation of international law”.
The Israeli army told AFP in a statement: “We did not strike in the area.”
Hezbollah, which has a powerful arsenal of rockets and missiles, says its attacks on Israel are in support of Hamas.
‘Unclear’ circumstances
UN chief Antonio Guterres condemned Saturday’s blast and underscored “grave concern” over the frequent exchange of fire along the Blue Line, according to his spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
Norway’s defence ministry said the Norwegian UN observer was “lightly injured” and had been admitted to hospital.
“The circumstances surrounding the attack are unclear,” defence ministry spokesperson Hanne Olafsen told Norwegian news agency NTB.
In Canberra, a Defence Department spokesperson told AFP the Australian had sustained “non-life threatening blast injuries”.
The person was “transported to a health centre at a nearby military base for treatment and has now been released to recover”.
Tenenti said: “All actors have a responsibility under international humanitarian law to ensure protection to non-combatants, including peacekeepers, journalists, medical personnel and civilians.”
Cross-border fire since October has killed at least 347 people in Lebanon, mostly Hezbollah fighters, but also at least 68 civilians, according to an AFP tally.
The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people in southern Lebanon and in northern Israel, where the military says 10 soldiers and eight civilians have been killed.
An uptick in deadly exchanges in recent days has fuelled concerns of an all-out conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, who last fought a war in 2006.
The UN Truce Supervision Organization was set up after the 1948 war that accompanied Israel’s creation to monitor armistice agreements reached with its Arab neighbours.
It also assists other UN peacekeeping operations in the region, including the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, which was established after Israel’s 1978 invasion of south Lebanon and expanded following the 2006 war.

China reaffirms financial support for Sri Lanka
BEIJING: China has said it would continue to support Sri Lanka, as the crisis-hit island nation’s prime minister on Saturday wrapped up a visit to Beijing to try to finalise a debt restructuring deal.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena arrived in China on Monday for a visit that included meeting President Xi Jinping and an appearance at the Boao Forum, a high-profile international meeting.
Sri Lanka’s years-long economic crisis was high on the agenda during Gunawardena’s trip, with China accounting for around 10 percent of the South Asian country’s total foreign debt.
China is willing to “continue supporting its financial institutions to actively negotiate with Sri Lanka, maintain friendly communication with other creditors, play a positive role in the International Monetary Fund, assist Sri Lanka in financial relief,” Beijing’s foreign ministry said in the Chinese version of a joint bilateral statement released Friday.
The two sides agreed to “make every effort to promote the Port City Colombo and Hambantota Development Project, turning them into flagship projects of the Sino-Sri Lankan joint construction of the ‘Belt and Road'”, the statement said, referring to Xi’s massive Belt and Road global infrastructure initiative.
The southern sea port of Hambantota was considered among the white-elephant projects launched by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, who ruled the country for a decade until 2015.
Rajapaksa borrowed heavily from China for projects that many criticised as a debt trap that led to the worst economic crisis in Sri Lanka’s history.
Unable to repay a huge loan taken from China in 2017 to build Hambantota port, Sri Lanka handed it over to the state-owned China Merchants Group for $1.12 billion on a 99-year lease.
Sri Lanka defaulted on its $46 billion external debt in April 2022 after it ran out of foreign exchange to finance even essential imports such as food, fuel and medicine.
It secured a $2.9 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout last year, with the programme conditional on a debt deal that satisfies foreign creditors.
China had agreed “in principle” to restructure Sri Lanka’s debt in December, but neither Colombo nor Beijing had given details and the two are yet to finalise an agreement.
Sri Lanka’s government said in January that a foreign debt restructure would be finalised by the beginning of April.

Revolt at Ecuador jail where powerful gang leader escaped
GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador: Authorities in Ecuador were working to quell a prison revolt Wednesday in the port city of Guayaquil at the same facility where one of the country’s most feared gang leaders escaped in January.
The “internal revolt” was started by a group of inmates, the SNAI prisons service said on the social media platform X, adding that authorities had regained control of over 80 percent of the jail.
AFP journalists heard gunshots coming from the prison, which is part of a vast penitentiary complex in southwestern Guayaquil from which the powerful narco-gang boss Adolfo “Fito” Macias escaped on January 7. Macias is still on the run.
He had been jailed since 2011, serving a 34-year sentence for organized crime, drug trafficking and murder.
His escape sparked mutinies in the country’s prisons and gang violence in the streets.
To restore order, President Daniel Noboa imposed a state of emergency and declared the country to be at “war” with gangs, deploying more than 20,000 troops.
Once considered a bastion of peace in Latin America, Ecuador has been plunged into crisis after years of expansion by transnational cartels that use its ports to ship drugs to the United States and Europe.

Four bodies found, six missing after Indonesia landslide
JAKARTA: Rescuers in Indonesia recovered four bodies including those of two children after a landslide and flooding hit a village on Java island, while six others remain missing, an official said Wednesday.
Cibenda village in West Java Province became inundated just before midnight on Sunday evening after hours of torrential rain when many villagers were asleep.
Ten people were initially reported missing, and dozens of homes were damaged, forcing hundreds to evacuate.
“Until this morning, four bodies have been retrieved and six more are still being searched,” Meidi, head of the local disaster mitigation agency and who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP.
Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season and the problem has been aggravated in some places by deforestation, with prolonged torrential rain causing flooding in some areas of the archipelago nation.
Earlier this month, flash flooding and landslides on Sumatra island killed at least 30 people with scores still missing.
A landslide and flooding swept away dozens of houses and destroyed a hotel near Lake Toba on Sumatra in December, killing at least two people.

Hundreds of kidnapped Nigerian school students released: governor
ABUJA, Nigeria: The more than 250 school students seized by gunmen in a mass kidnapping in northwestern Nigeria earlier this month have been released, the local governor said on Sunday.
“The abducted Kuriga school children are released unharmed,” Kaduna state governor Uba Sani said in a statement that did not specify how they were freed.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had sent troops to rescue pupils kidnapped by gunmen from a school in the country’s northwest in one of the largest mass abductions in three years.
The Kaduna state attack was the second mass kidnapping in a week in Africa’s most populous country, where heavily armed criminal gangs on motorbikes target victims in villages and schools and along highways in the hunt for ransom payments.
Gunmen who kidnapped 286 students and staff from a school in northern Nigeria last week have demanded a total of 1 billion naira ($620,432) for their release, a spokesman for the families of the hostages and a local councillor told Reuters.
The school children, some older students and members of the school staff were abducted on March 7 in the town of Kuriga, in Nigeria’s northwestern Kaduna State, in the first mass kidnapping in the country since 2021.
Jubril Aminu, a community leader who acts as a spokesman for the families of the hostages, said he had received a call on his phone from the kidnappers on Tuesday.
“They made a total of a 1 billion (naira) ransom demand for all the pupils, students and staff of the school,” Aminu said.
“They gave an ultimatum to pay the ransom within 20 days, effective from the date of the kidnap. They said they will kill all the students and the staff if the ransom demand is not met.”
Idris Ibrahim, an elected official from the Kuriga Ward municipal council, confirmed the ransom demand and the amount.
“Yes, the kidnappers called the community through Jubril Aminu’s number and made the demand,” he said.
“They called from a hidden number but the authorities are working on getting the number,” Ibrahim told Reuters.
He added that the security forces were taking “adequate measures” to secure the release of the students.

One dead, oil refinery on fire after drone attacks in Russia
MOSCOW: One person died Saturday in the Russian border region of Belgorod adjoining Ukraine and a fire broke out at an oil refinery further east in Samara after drone attacks, officials said.
Belgorod governor Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote on Telegram that two districts in his region had been hit by drones.
“It’s shaping up to be a difficult morning,” Gladkov said. “One civilian was killed, two others were wounded.”
The region of Samara, meanwhile, saw “several drone attacks” on local oil refineries, governor Dmitri Azarov said in a statement published on Telegram.
One of them caused a fire at the Kuibyshev refinery, he added, noting that there were no casualties.
The refinery, run by Russian oil giant Rosneft, is one of the largest in Samara, with a production capacity of seven million tonnes per year, according to its official website.
A drone attack on another refinery in the region, Novokuibyshevsk, “was repelled without damaging the technological equipment”, according to Azarov.
“We see that the enemy, which is suffering defeats on the battlefield, is doing everything possible to undermine our endurance and unity,” he said.
Separately, the Russian defence ministry said in a press release that it had destroyed “12 Ukrainian drones” overnight over the regions of Bryansk, Belgorod and Voronezh, all three of which border Ukraine, as well as over the region of Saratov.
Ukraine, which has been facing a Russian offensive for over two years, has stepped up its attacks inside Russia in recent weeks, targeting energy sites in particular.
Kyiv had promised to bring the fighting to Russian soil in retaliation for the numerous bombardments on its territory.

UN chief to visit Gaza border in new plea for truce
CAIRO: United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit Egypt’s border with Gaza on Saturday to renew pleas for a ceasefire that could bring relief to a territory devastated by more than five months of war between Israel and Hamas.
His trip comes as Israel threatens to launch a major military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, just over the border from Egypt, despite international appeals against such an attack.
A majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents are sheltering around Rafah. Though conditions are worse in the north of the strip, the plight of civilians across the territory has deteriorated sharply as the conflict has ground on.
UN Chief Guterres will visit Al Arish in Egypt’s northern Sinai, where much of the international relief for Gaza is delivered and stockpiled, and the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing, one of the entry points for the aid.
He is expected to visit a hospital in Al Arish and meet U.N. humanitarian workers in Rafah.
As hopes for a truce during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan have faded and the humanitarian situation in Gaza has become more desperate, the United States and other countries have sought to use air drops and ships to deliver more relief.
But humanitarian agencies say that only about one-fifth of the required amount of supplies has been entering Gaza, and that the only way to meet needs in coastal enclave is to rapidly accelerate deliveries by road.
Read more: UN Security Council fails to pass US resolution calling for immediate ceasefire in Gaza
Israel, which has vowed to destroy Hamas and is worried that the Palestinian group will divert aid, has kept all but one of its land crossings into the enclave closed.
This week, a global food monitor warned that famine was imminent in northern Gaza and could spread to other parts of the territory if a ceasefire is not agreed.
More than 32,000 people have been killed by Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, many of them women and children, according to local health authorities.
Israel launched the assault in response to an attack by Hamas in which some 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 taken hostage, according to Israeli tallies.
UN Chief Guterres, who made one previous trip to Egypt’s border with Gaza shortly after the war broke out, is visiting Egypt and Jordan as part of an annual “solidarity trip” to Muslim countries during Ramadan.
While in the Egyptian capital Cairo, he is due to break the daily fast with refugees from Sudan, where war between rival military factions has displaced nearly 8.5 million people, driven parts of the population to extreme hunger, and led to waves of ethnically-driven killings in Darfur.

In a new interview with a digital media station, TV veteran Shehnaz Sheikh disclosed her salaries for her hit dramas, as she spoke about the increased competition among fellow actors in recent times, unlike in the 80s.
“I belong to the era when there wasn’t a concept of brands, and because there weren’t many brands, eventually there wasn’t much competition [for salaries], because what would you do with all that money,” she said.
The veteran continued, “I remember when I did Ankahi, I was paid Rs.800 per episode, including wardrobe, food and even transport, without any additional charges. Later when I did Tanhaiyaan after three years, my payment was increased to Rs.1000 per episode, and this was specifically about the top list, A-grade actors.”
“Things change, and they are changing for good and for bad. Actors today are paid a lot, not all of them, but most of them. Whether they deserve it or not, that’s a different discussion altogether,” Sheikh explained.
Further discussing the role of social media in changing the entertainment landscape today, the actor expressed, “I’m grateful that we didn’t have these [smart] phones and social media back then, because you cannot imagine today the life we spent at that time, without any hesitations or this constant alarm of being recorded by someone.”
“[These days] your privacy is gone, it’s finished, but at the same time, the amount of information and knowledge you have on your fingertips [with the technology]. I can’t imagine the rest of my life today being without social media, I love it,” she concluded, with a mention that she enjoys watching reels and TikTok videos, also because it gives her freedom to skip if doesn’t like specific content.
Notably, the veteran is set to return to TV screens with a new talk show on PTV, however, when asked about the acting comeback, Sheikh shared that makers don’t show interest in making the type of projects that she wants to do, hence, she is trying to enjoy her retired life.

UNGA adopts Pakistani resolution calling for fighting Islamophobia
UNITED NATIONS: The UN General Assembly Friday adopted a Pakistani resolution, by a big majority, that calls for, among other elements, concerted action to fight ongoing violence against Muslims and requests the UN Secretary-General to appoint a special envoy to combat Islamophobia.
Prior to adopting the new resolution, entitled: ‘Measures to Combat Islamophobia’, by a vote of 113 in favour to none against, with 44 abstentions, the 193-member Assembly rejected two amendments proposed by a group of European nations. India, along with most of European states, abstained on the resolution.
The proposals would have replaced key language in the resolution, including calling for a focal point instead of a UN special envoy and removing references to the desecration of the holy Quran.
The U.N. created the International Day through a resolution adopted following attacks on two mosques Christchurch, New Zealand, that left 51 people dead on this day in 2019.
Two years ago, the General Assembly declared March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia under the terms of a resolution, also presented by Pakistan, with the sponsorship of the OIC and other Like-minded Member States.
Introducing the resolution, Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, said despite the resolution and other actions as well as efforts by leaders promoting inter-religious and inter-communal harmony, the incidents of Islamophobia – of discrimination, prejudice and violence against Muslims – have risen exponentially both at the societal and State levels.
“These are manifested by the despicable acts of desecration of the Holy Quran with seven such incidents recorded last year alone,” he said.
“The lynching of Muslims by ‘cow vigilantes’: They are manifested by the widespread hate speech against Muslims, online and offline, in discrimination in education and employment.
“In attacks on women wearing the hijab. In the vandalization and destruction of mosques and other holy sites. In racial and religious profiling. In the media outlets, spawning hate and prejudice and fueling hate and prejudice. In the calls for genocide against Muslim minorities which go unpunished,”the Pakistani envoy added.
But most governments , he said, refuse to adopt laws and rules that would prevent and punish such acts of Islamophobia and incitement to violence on the spurious agenda of the right to “freedom of expression”.
“Yet,” he said, “this freedom ends if the Holocaust is denied. This freedom ends if you are demonstrating for Palestinian rights or protesting against Israel’s ‘plausible genocide’ in Gaza.”

Xiaomi announces release date for first EV, shares surge
BEIJING: Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi will start deliveries of its first electric vehicle by the end of March, the firm’s boss said Tuesday, bringing its highly anticipated entry into the automotive industry to the brink of completion.
Xiaomi — the world’s third-largest smartphone manufacturer — also produces tablets, smartwatches, headphones, and scooters.
In 2021, the Beijing-based firm announced its planned foray into the electric vehicle sector, made highly competitive in recent months as top Chinese brands engage in an aggressive price war.
“The Xiaomi SU7 will be officially released on March 28,” Lei Jun, the company’s founder and CEO, wrote on Chinese social media site Weibo.
The announcement was accompanied by a photo of the new vehicle, which was first unveiled to the press in December.
The firm’s shares soared nearly 10 percent by midday in Hong Kong, where the firm is listed.
Equipped with Xiaomi software and electronic features, the SU7 is produced by Chinese auto giant BAIC.
Its batteries — with a driving range of up to 800 kilometres (500 miles) — are supplied by China’s largest electric automaker BYD, as well as domestic battery giant CATL.
“The goal is to become one of the world’s top five automotive manufacturers through 15 to 20 years of hard work,” Lei said in December.
Many top tech firms in China — the world’s largest auto market — have invested recently in the country’s EV sector, where foreign firms have struggled to get a foothold.
Founded in 2010, Xiaomi has achieved rapid growth through its strategy of marketing high-end devices at affordable prices, initially directly through online channels.

Indonesia floods, landslide kill 19, with seven missing
Days of torrential rain have brought floods and landslides in Indonesia’s province of West Sumatra, forcing the evacuation of more than 70,000 people, while killing at least 19, with seven going missing, authorities said on Sunday.
The havoc since last Thursday in the provincial capital of Padang and eight other areas has damaged nearly 700 homes, scores of bridges and schools and 113 hectares (280 acres) of farmland.
Indonesia’s rescue agency is hunting for those missing, officials said, with 150 rescuers drafted into the effort, hampered by blocked roads following the landslides.
“Today’s search involves 150 personnel from various disaster agencies,” Abdul Malik, the chief of the provincial rescue team, said in a statement.
Those evacuated gathered in the nearest mosques, said Abdul Muhari, the spokesperson of Indonesia’s disaster agency BNPB, but no temporary shelters were set up. They received food, water and medicines, while others returned home as waters subsided.
Most areas in Padang are still flooded, Abdul added, with roads blocked by a landslide extending 50 metres (164 ft) in the area of Padang Pariaman.
With more rain expected in the next few days, the agency warned of further damage from floods and landslides.
Indonesia’s rainy season began in January with the BMKG meteorological agency forecasting a first-quarter peak, particularly on the islands of Java and Sumatra.
