Bangladesh students vow to resume protests unless leaders freed

Bangladesh, students vow resume protests, leaders arrest

DHAKA: A Bangladeshi student group has vowed to resume protests that sparked a lethal police crackdown and nationwide unrest unless several of their leaders are released from custody on Sunday.

Last week’s violence killed at least 205 people, according to an AFP count of police and hospital data, in one of the biggest upheavals of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year tenure.

Army patrols and a nationwide curfew remain in place more than a week after they were imposed, and a police dragnet has scooped up thousands of protesters including at least half a dozen student leaders.

Members of Students Against Discrimination, whose campaign against civil service hiring rules precipitated the unrest, said they would end their weeklong protest moratorium.

The group’s chief Nahid Islam and others “should be freed and the cases against them must be withdrawn”, Abdul Hannan Masud told reporters in an online briefing late Saturday.

Masud, who did not disclose his location because he was in hiding from authorities, also demanded “visible actions” be taken against government ministers and police officers responsible for the deaths of protesters.

“Otherwise, Students Against Discrimination will be forced to launch tough protests” from Monday, he said.

Islam and two other senior members of the protest group were on Friday forcibly discharged from hospital in the capital Dhaka and taken away by a group of plainclothes detectives.

Earlier in the week Islam told AFP he was being treated at the hospital for injuries police inflicted on him during an earlier round of detention and said he was in fear for his life.

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan told reporters Friday that the trio were taken into custody for their own safety but did not confirm if they had been formally arrested.

Police told AFP on Sunday that detectives had taken two others into custody, while a Students Against Discrimination activist told AFP that a third had been taken on Sunday morning.

At least 9,000 people have been arrested nationwide since the unrest began according to Prothom Alo, Bangladesh’s largest daily newspaper.

Jobs crisis

Protests began this month over the reintroduction of a quota scheme reserving more than half of all government jobs for certain candidates.

With around 18 million young Bangladeshis out of work, according to government figures, the move deeply upset graduates facing an acute employment crisis.

Critics say the quota is used to stack public jobs with loyalists to the ruling Awami League.

The Supreme Court cut the number of reserved jobs last week but fell short of protesters’ demands to scrap the quotas entirely.

Prime Minister Hasina has ruled Bangladesh since 2009 and won her fourth consecutive election in January after a vote without genuine opposition.

ICJ rules Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands illegal

Israeli occupation illegal, Palestinian land, ICJ ruling

THE HAGUE: The United Nation’s top court said in its opinion that Israel’s decades-long Occupation of Palestinian territory was illegal and needed to end as soon as possible.

The advisory opinion by The Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) was welcomed by the Palestinian presidency calling it “historic”.

The ICJ’s statement, called an advisory opinion, is not binding, but it comes amid mounting concerns over the death toll and destruction in Israel’s war on Gaza.

The court’s opinion likely to increase diplomatic pressure on Israel, whose lawmakers voted on Thursday to oppose a Palestinian state, calling it an “existential threat”.

In The Hague, ICJ presiding judge Nawaf Salam said: “The court has found that Israel’s continued presence in the Palestinian Territories is illegal.”

Israel is“under the obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence as rapidly as possible,” the judge said at the seat of the ICJ.

The ICJ added that Israel was “under obligation to cease immediately all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers” from occupied land.

Israel’s policies and practices, including the building of new settlements and Israel’s continued maintenance of a wall between the territories,“amount to annexation of large parts” of the occupied territory, the court said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the ICJ’s opinion.

Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki called it a “watershed moment”. “The Palestinian people have endured unbearable suffering and injustice for decades,” al-Maliki told reporters outside the courtroom.

A separate, high-profile case that South Africa has brought before the court alleges that Israel has committed genocidal acts during its Gaza offensive.

The UN’s General Assembly asked the ICJ in late 2022 to give an“advisory opinion” on the“legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem”.

The ICJ held a week-long session in February to hear submissions from countries following the request – supported by most countries within the Assembly.

The office of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas said it welcomed the “historic decision and demands that Israel be compelled to implement it”.

Palestinian minister of state for foreign affairs Varsen Aghabekian Shahin hailed “a great day for Palestine”, speaking with AFP on behalf of the Palestinian foreign ministry.

Hamas has called for an “immediate” international action to end Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories after the ICJ ruling.

Reserved seats verdict: Hearing on PML-N’s review plea after two months

Reserved seats verdict: Hearing on PML-N's review plea after two months

ISLAMABAD: The review petition filed by PML-N against the Supreme Court’s ruling on reserved seats case is likely to be fixed for hearing after two months, ARY News reported on Friday quoting sources.

According to sources, the review petition has been forwarded to the judges’ committee on practice and procedure after allotting it a number.

Two members of the committee have agreed to fix the petition for hearing after two months, say sources.

The sources said the majority of the members recommended hearing the petition after the vacations of the Supreme Court so that all the judges could be available.

The plea

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had filed a review petition against the Supreme Court’s verdict declaring PTI as eligible for reserved seats.

The PML-N filed a review petition in the apex court, urging the top court to withdraw its July 12 order.

In its peal, the PML-N argued that the PTI was not even a party in the case as it was Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) which approached the Supreme Court.

The PML-N plea stated that SC’s order to award reserved seats to PTI on SIC plea is tantamount to violation of law.

The PML-N in its petition had made the SIC and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as respondents.

Last week, a 13-member bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, ruled that the PTI is eligible for the allocation of reserved seats, dealing a major setback to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ruling coalition.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah announced the 8-5 majority verdict, setting aside the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) order wherein it had upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision denying the reserved seats to the SIC.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Jamal Mandokhail, Justice Naeem Afghan, Justice Yahya Afridi, and Justice Ameenuddin Khan opposed the majority decision.

Oil prices fall on lingering Chinese demand concerns

Oil prices international market

Oil prices slipped on Tuesday on worries about a slowing Chinese economy crimping demand, though a growing consensus that the U.S. Federal Reserve will begin cutting its key interest rate as soon as September limited declines.

Brent futures fell 21 cents, or 0.25%, to $84.64 a barrel by 0408 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped 25 cents, or 0.31%, to $81.66.

IG market strategist Yeap Jun Rong said in an email the weaker run in Chinese economic data “cast some doubts on whether market participants are being overly optimistic around Chinese oil demand outlook”.

The world’s second-largest economy grew 4.7% in April-June, official data showed, its slowest since the first quarter of 2023 and missing a 5.1% forecast in a Reuters poll. It also slowed from the previous quarter’s 5.3% expansion, hamstrung by a protracted property downturn and job insecurity.

“Its 2Q GDP and retail sales figures had surprised on the downside by a significant margin, while anticipation for stronger stimulus measures at the Third Plenum may face the risks of disappointment,” Yeap added, referring to a key economic leadership meeting in Beijing this week.

In the U.S., Fed Chair Jerome Powell said on Monday the three U.S. inflation readings over the second quarter of this year “add somewhat to confidence” that the pace of price increases is returning to the central bank’s target in a sustainable fashion, remarks market participants interpreted as indicating a turn to interest rate cuts may not be far off.

Lower interest rates decrease the cost of borrowing, which can boost economic activity and oil demand.

Key U.S. economic data has started to show signs of softness, which could quicken the Fed’s decision on monetary policy easing, with cuts likely in September and December, according to CME FedWatch Tool, said OANDA senior market analyst Kelvin Wong in a client note.

On the supply side, Houthi fighters in Yemen – responding to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza – targeted three vessels, including an oil tanker, in the Red and Mediterranean seas with ballistic missiles, drones and booby-trapped boats, they said on Monday.

While crisis in the Middle East has not impacted supply, attacks on ships in the Red Sea has forced vessels to take longer routes, meaning oil remains on the water for longer.

Biden leads condemnation after Trump wounded at rally shooting

Biden condemnation, Trump wounded, rally shooting

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden led the condemnation after his election rival Donald Trump was wounded in an apparent assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, as some Republicans blamed the Biden campaign for the violence.

Political leaders on both sides of the aisle slammed the attack minutes after the Republican candidate was rushed off stage by the Secret Service with blood running down his face.

“There’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s sick. It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country… We cannot be like this, we cannot condone this,” Biden told reporters in an emergency briefing in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

“The idea that there’s political violence, or violence in America like this, is just unheard of. It’s just not appropriate. Everybody, everybody must condemn it. Everybody,” Biden said.

Vice President Kamala Harris said on X: “We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting.”

Biden’s former boss, Barack Obama, echoed his words in a statement, saying there was “absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy.”

“Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics,” he said on X.

Former president George W. Bush condemned the “cowardly” attack.

“Laura and I are grateful that President Trump is safe following the cowardly attack on his life. And we commend the men and women of the Secret Service for their speedy response,” the Republican said in a statement.

Bill and Hillary Clinton also condemned the violence.

“Hillary and I are thankful that President Trump is safe, heartbroken for all those affected by the attack at today’s rally in Pennsylvania, and grateful for the swift action of the US Secret Service,” the former president wrote on X.

But some prominent Republicans, including one of Trump’s potential running mates, J.D. Vance, swiftly pointed the finger at Biden’s reelection campaign.

“Today is not just some isolated incident,” Vance wrote on X. “The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

“The Republican District Attorney in Butler County, PA, should immediately file charges against Joseph R. Biden for inciting an assassination,” wrote Republican Congressman Mike Collins of Georgia, also on X.

‘I love you Dad’

Trump’s shocked children also took to social media.

“This is the fighter America needs!” son Eric Trump wrote above a photo of his father with blood running down his cheek, his fist in the air and an American flag waving in the background as the Secret Service rushed him from the stage.

Donald Trump Jr posted the same photo, writing on X: “He’ll never stop fighting to Save America.”

“I love you Dad, today and always,” daughter Ivanka posted on X, thanking supporters as well as the Secret Service for their “quick and decisive actions today.”

“I continue to pray for our country,” she said.

From the Senate, top Democrat Chuck Schumer said he was “horrified” by the shooting, while his Republican counterpart Mitch McConnell slammed it as “despicable.”

“I thank God that former President Trump is safe. As we learn more details about this horrifying incident, let us pray that all those in attendance at the former President’s rally today are unharmed,” former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote on X.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk said Saturday that he “fully” endorses Trump after the rally violence, and hopes “for his rapid recovery.”

“Had it been less than a half inch to the right, he would not have survived,” the Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, posted on X.

“Trump is truly blessed.”

Vivek Ramaswamy, who challenged Trump for the Republican presidential nomination at the primaries, said the same.

“We believe the fact that President Trump is safe right now is nothing short of an act of God,” he wrote on X.

“Today, the future survival of the United States of America came down to less than a hair’s width in the path of a bullet.”

Turkey puts its best foot forward to charm Chinese investors

Turkey, Chinese investors, European markets

ANKARA: Turkey plans to draw on its geographical position and an EU customs deal to entice Chinese investors keen to access European markets tariff-free, as it recently just did with carmaker BYD.

The Chinese electric vehicle giant signed a billion-dollar deal with Ankara on Monday to open a plant in western Turkey, promising to create 5,000 jobs, a move that will help it dodge new EU tariffs.

The country, at the crossroads between Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, is in talks with other Chinese companies, Turkey’s Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir said this week.

“We want to transform Turkey into a production centre for the next generation of vehicles,” Kacir told private broadcaster Haberturk.

The minister emphasised his country’s selling points, including being part of the EU’s customs union and having trade agreements with 28 countries.

“Chinese producers want rapid access to international markets,” he said. “Investing in Turkey offers them that.”

The EU recently slapped additional provisional tariffs of up to 38 percent on Chinese EVs following an investigation that concluded state subsidies meant they were unfairly undermining European rivals.

But Ankara struck a customs deal with the EU in 1995 that enables the free flow between them of a number of goods, notably cars.

Turkey became one of the leading centres of the world’s automobile industry starting in the 1970s, when major carmakers including Fiat and Renault opened plants there — with others like Ford, Toyota and Hyundai following.

BYD’s Turkish base will allow the Chinese EV specialist to bypass EU tariffs upped by Brussels in July, and enter European markets.

Under new regulations on investment incentives, BYD will be able to circumvent a new 40 percent tariff that Turkey originally imposed on electric vehicle imports. Manufacturers investing in the country will be exempt.

At least five other Chinese carmakers are now considering opening plants in Turkey, state-owned news agency Anadolu reported.

Turkish manufacturer TOGG and Chinese firm Farasis have also partnered up to produce EV batteries in Turkey.

Turkish officials have held numerous meetings with Chinese industrialists in the last year, the industry ministry said.

Turkey’s foreign affairs minister Hakan Fidan visited China in June to seal a new bilateral deal, calling the countries “drivers of Asian wealth.”

South Korea on Thursday appointed K-pop girl band NewJeans ‘honorary ambassadors’ as part of a drive to promote tourism, joining a long list of Korean celebrities to take up the role.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

South Korea has seen tourism figures recover to nearly pre-pandemic levels this year, with around a third of visitors citing K-pop or K-drama – the so-called ‘Hallyu’ or Korean wave – as a major motive for travelling to the East Asian country.

“We are very happy to be appointed as an ambassador to promote South Korean tourism today,” band member Minji said, adding it would be a ‘great joy’ for the supergroup to promote their country’s charms.

Tourist arrivals are at ‘about 90 per cent of pre-pandemic levels,’ said Culture Minister Yu In-chon.

“With NewJeans as tourism ambassadors, I expect even more people from all over the world to visit Korea,” he added.

The group will serve as ambassadors with no actual diplomatic responsibilities for a year, succeeding previous representatives such as ‘Squid Game’ star and Emmy-winner Lee Jung-jae and K-pop megastars BTS.

Members of the band shared their personal recommendations for visitors, including eating ‘gimbap dipped in tteokbokki sauce’ and taking ‘a photo a day’, which is an ‘unspoken rule among young Korean generations’.

Haerin said she recommended tourists to visit a hanok – or traditional Korean house – while Hanni urged visitors to embrace Korean cuisine.

“You have to eat Korean food when you come to Korea, and since it’s summer and the weather is hot, if you eat food like samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) or mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles), you’ll be able to enjoy it a lot,” she said.

More than 11 million tourists visited South Korea last year, a 245 per cent increase compared to 2022 when some pandemic restrictions were still in force.

Chinese and Japanese tourists made up the majority of the visitors.

NewJeans recently held their first fan meet at the Tokyo Dome, less than two years after their debut – the fastest Tokyo Dome debut for any foreign artist. Tickets were sold out in minutes.

The group’s Japanese debut single ‘Supernatural’ sold over a million copies as of Thursday, marking their fifth million-seller.

‘Trolling is so passe…’: Ushna Shah defends Sharmin Segal’s underplay in ‘Heeramandi’

A-list actor Ushna Shah came out in support of Bollywood starlet Sharmin Segal, defending her underplay as Alamzeb in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

Taking to her official handle on X, Pakistani A-lister Ushna Shah defended Sharmin Segal’s performance as Alamzeb, in ‘Heeramandi’, and wrote, “Sharmin Segal underplayed Alamzeb but only slightly, which seems to be difficult to digest for an audience used to be a more dramatic style.”

She continued, “The character would have been butchered had she over-played it, it would have become generic.”

“She mastered the Urdu dialect better than most Hindi speaking actors & the grain in her voice was spectacular,” Shah commended Segal.

Further reviewing the acting of British actor Jason Shah, who essayed Alastair Cartwright in the series, the ‘Habs’ actor added, “The real tragedy is Cartwright not having an English accent; he was playing a British coloniser! Forget Received Pronunciation, he didn’t even bother forging a modern Brit accent? Even the English speaking Nawaabs should have had a trans-Atlantic-ish speak, similar to Jinnah, Gandhi, Nehru etc.”

Concluding her detailed review, Shah noted, “Trolling is so passe,” and added the hashtags ‘Heeramandi’ and ‘Sharmin Segal’.

For the unversed, Segal, who is the niece of Bhansali, was dubbed the weakest link in the ensemble cast of the series and viewers questioned the veteran filmmaker for casting her in the pivotal role of Alamzeb in ‘Heeramandi’, only because of her relation to him.

Meanwhile, the eight-episodic launching season of the web series ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, co-starring Segal with Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjeeda Sheikh in main roles, along with Farida Jalal, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar and Adhyayan Suman, and Taha Shah, is currently streaming on Netflix.

The series has been renewed for season 2 on the streaming platform.
