Ukraine’s air force commander dismissed after F-16 crash

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed Ukraine’s Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk on Friday, according to a presidential decree.

The dismissal was announced just a day after the Ukrainian military reported that an F-16 jet crashed and its pilot died while repelling a major Russian strike on Monday.

“I have decided to replace the commander of the Air Forces… I am eternally grateful to all our military pilots,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his evening address.

He did not give a reason for dismissal but mentioned that personnel must be protected, and that there was a need to strengthen the command level.

Ukraine’s General Staff said that General Lieutenant Anatoliy Kryvonozhka would temporarily perform the duties of commander.

The Ukrainian military did not provide a reason for Monday’s crash but said the jet came down while it was approaching a Russian target. Oleshchuk said on Monday partners from the U.S. were helping to investigate the incident.

A U.S. defense official told Reuters that the crash did not appear to be the result of Russian fire, and possible causes from pilot error to mechanical failure were still being investigated.

The arrival of the first F-16 jets was a milestone for Ukraine in the fight against the full-scale invasion Russia launched 2-1/2 years ago.

Three missing as ‘extremely strong’ typhoon nears Japan

extremely strong typhoon, Japan, three missing

TOKYO: Japan warned Wednesday that an “extremely strong” typhoon bearing down on the main southern island of Kyushu would bring unusually violent storms, as three people remained missing after a landslide.

Shanshan was 120 kilometres (75 miles) off Yakushima island, packing gusts of up to 252 kilometres (157 miles) per hour and inching towards Kyushu, home to 12.5 million people.

“Typhoon Shanshan is expected to approach southern Kyushu with extremely strong force through Thursday and it may make landfall,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters.

“It is expected that violent winds, high waves, and storm surge at levels that many people have never experienced before may occur,” said Hayashi, the top government spokesman.

The system has already brought heavy rains to wide areas of Japan, and late Tuesday a wall of mud, rocks and other debris swept away a house in Gamagori, a city in central Aichi prefecture, with five family members inside.

After all-night recovery efforts, a second woman in her 40s was rescued but a couple in their 70s and a man in his 30s remained unaccounted for, a Gamagori official told AFP.

Southern Kyushu is expected to see 500 millimetres (20 inches) of rain in the 24 hours to Thursday morning, and 600 millimetres in the 24 hours to Friday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

Local governments issued evacuation advisories to 810,000 people in the central Shizuoka prefecture on Honshu because of the rain and to 56,000 others in Kagoshima in Kyushu, the fire and disaster management agency said.

The weather agency may also issue a special heavy rain alert for Kagoshima prefecture later Wednesday, an agency official said in a morning news conference.

“It’s necessary for us to be on the highest alert,” he said, calling for people to evacuate before any violent storm emerges.

Japan Airlines cancelled 112 domestic flights and six international fights on Wednesday, while ANA Holdings cancelled 112 domestic flights on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Kyushu Railway said it would suspend some Shinkansen bullet train services between Kumamoto and Kagoshima Chuo from Wednesday night and warned of further possible disruption.

Trains between Tokyo and Fukuoka, the most populous city on Kyushu, may also be cancelled depending on weather conditions this week, other operators said.

Shanshan comes in the wake of Typhoon Ampil, which disrupted hundreds of flights and trains this month.

Despite dumping heavy rain, it caused only minor injuries and damage.

Ampil came days after Tropical Storm Maria brought record rains to northern areas.

Typhoons in the region have been forming closer to coastlines, intensifying more rapidly and lasting longer over land due to climate change, according to a study released last month.

Powerhouse performer Hajra Yamin aka Sumbul of the superhit serial ‘Noor Jahan’ discussed her preparation for the character which she believed is poles apart from what she is in real life.

In a new interview with a digital magazine, Hajra Yamin got candid about her character in the on-air serial ‘Noor Jahan’ and confessed that it wasn’t an easy one to play, given the fact that Sumbul is very different from her off-screen.

“Sumbul was not an easy character to play at all, because she is very different from what I am. We are poles apart,” she said. “I had to lower my voice to get into this character and to portray her as submissive as I could – be it through my voice, body language, hunched shoulders and all.”

Further speaking about the director of the project, the ‘Jalan’ actor added, “Musaddiq Malek was like my fairy godmother on the set and we worked as a team on Sumbul. He had to constantly give me the reminder that this story is of Sumbul and not Hajra. Therefore, I cannot enforce my perspective on the character. Because as Hajra, I used to get offended on several instances, there were multiple examples of insult and humiliation, which used to really irk me, but now that I watch it on screen, it all makes so much sense.”

In the end, Yamin also extended an apology to all the girls like Sumbul in the world, whom she used to judge earlier for their acts, as she realized their life and story after essaying this character.

Biden says ‘I gave my best’ as he passes torch to Harris

Joe Biden, Democratic convention, Kamala Harris, Gaza protest

CHICAGO: An emotional US President Joe Biden passed the torch to Democratic nominee Kamala Harris with a hug on Monday, saying he gave everything for his country in a bittersweet farewell speech at the party’s convention in Chicago.

“America, America, I gave my best to you,” the 81-year-old Biden said, quoting a patriotic hymn during a nearly hour-long address that ran through his achievements while urging voters to back his vice president against Donald Trump in November.

Harris joined him on stage after the speech and the pair embraced, as the crowd gave Biden a rapturous reception following his stunning decision less than a month ago to drop out of the 2024 White House race.

In a remarkable turnaround, Harris has reenergized the party and wiped-out Republican rival Trump’s lead in the polls, but Biden insisted that he was not bitter about stepping aside.

Instead, as he contemplates the imminent end of a five-decade political career, he said that he had done what he thought best to ensure that his nemesis Trump does not return to the Oval Office.

“I love the job, but I love my country more. I love my country more,” said Biden. “And all this talk about how I’m angry at all those people who said I should step down — that’s not true.”

Both Biden and Harris appeared to wipe away a tear as the US leader won a huge four-minute ovation when he first took to the stage, following an introduction by First Lady Jill Biden and his daughter Ashley.

Several members of the audience were also in tears as Biden made his farewell speech, before leaving the stage to the strains of the song “Higher Love.”

‘Gave my best’

And Harris had earlier made a surprise appearance — Democratic nominees don’t normally speak until the final day of the convention — to heap lavish tribute on her boss.

“I want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible president Joe Biden,” said Harris, who was wearing a tan suit and took to the stage to Beyonce’s “Freedom.”

“We are forever grateful to you.”

It was undoubtedly a difficult swan song for Biden, but he insisted he would be the “best volunteer” for Harris’s campaign — knowing perhaps that his legacy depends on her beating Trump.

Biden listed his proudest achievements including on the economy and health care, but above all for healing the “soul of America” after Trump’s time in office and the pro-Trump January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

“I made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I gave my best to you,” he said.

Protests against Gaza war

Hillary Clinton, who lost against Trump in 2016 in her own bid to become America’s first woman president, backed Harris to finally break the glass ceiling.

Earlier, protests against Israel’s war in Gaza had shadowed the opening of the convention, underscoring what remains a potential vote-loser for Democrats among left-wingers and Arab Americans.

A group of demonstrators broke through the outer security fence of the convention after splitting off from a larger protest of thousands of people.

Police in blue helmets with shields and carrying black batons prevented them from getting to the inner cordon.

Trump, meanwhile, has been sent into a tailspin by the sudden change at the top of the Democratic ticket.

While Democrats are in Chicago, the Republican will spend the week crisscrossing the country.

SC suspends IHC verdict in audio leaks case

Audio leaks case, Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) , Islamabad High Court (IHC)

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) on Monday Islamabad High Court (IHC) May 29 and June 25 verdict in the audio leaks case, ARY News reported.

As per details, a two-member bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, including Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan heard the case.

The Supreme Court suspended the Islamabad High Court’s orders dated May 29 and June 25 and issued notices to Bushra Bibi, wife of former PM Imran Khan and Najam-ul-Haq, son of ex-CJP Saqib Nisar.

The top court also approved the federal government’s pleas challenging the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) verdict.

During the hearing, Justice Aminuddin Khan inquired whether the Islamabad High Court had determined if the audio recording was authentic and who was recording the audio calls. The Additional Attorney General replied that the investigation was ongoing.

READ: Audio leaks case: Fed govt challenges IHC verdict in SC

Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan remarked that no one in this country wants to uncover the truth. He added that the Supreme Court had stayed the inquiry commission’s proceedings.

The Supreme Court has observed that the audio recording’s authenticity needs to be verified. The court has also inquired whether the Islamabad High Court had considered this aspect of the case.

The Additional Attorney General informed the court that the Islamabad High Court’s proceedings were not final, and the high court had exceeded its jurisdiction under Article 199.

The Supreme Court has been informed that the Islamabad High Court cannot conduct an investigation, and the matter will be heard again on a date to be announced later.

Earlier, the federal government challenged the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) verdict in the alleged audio leak case involving Bushra Bibi and the son of former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar in the Supreme Court (SC).

The appeal nominated the former Chief Justice’s son, PTA, Ministry of Defense, and others as parties.

The government argues that the IHC’s decision is contrary to facts and that the high court had granted relief that was not even requested.

The plea also contends that the IHC has no authority to take suo motu notice under Article 199, hereby the high court’s decision should be declared null and void.

The federal government stated that when an alleged audio leak involving the distribution of tickets surfaced, the National Assembly Speaker took notice and formed a committee.

The former Chief Justice’s son had also challenged the committee’s summons in the IHC.

The government argues that the IHC’s demand for reports from institutions is an overstepping of its authority and that the high court cannot conduct fact-finding.

ALSO READ: Audio leaks case: IHC wants PM to reveal actors behind ‘mass surveillance’

It is pertinent to mention here that the IHC declared that ‘any form of surveillance’ on citizens was illegal and unconstitutional, asking Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif to explain who is ‘responsible for the mass surveillance.

IHC Justice Babar Sattar issued a written order on the plea of Bushra Bibi, and Najamus Saqib, against the audio leaks.

In the written order, Justice Sattar said that the federal government was responsible for the surveillance of four million citizens and PM Shehbaz and cabinet members are “collectively and individually” responsible for the mass surveillance.

The IHC also ordered the Prime Minister to submit a report on the legal framework of the surveillance system within six weeks. The report must also clarify whether the surveillance is being carried out in accordance with the law and the constitution.

It also directed the Prime Minister to explain who is responsible for the installation of the surveillance system and mass surveillance and “who is in charge of the system that is affecting the privacy of citizens”.

Meanwhile, the IHC also issued contempt of court notice to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman and its members, directing them to submit response within six weeks. “The court is of the view that the PTA apparently misinterpreted the surveillance system in the report”, it added.

Ukrainian drones spark fuel fire in south Russia

Ukrainian drones attack, fuel storage, south Russia

MOSCOW: Ukrainian drones attacked an oil storage facility in Russia’s southern Rostov region early Sunday morning, sparking a large fuel fire, the local governor said.

Videos published on social media showed thick black smoke and bursts of flames coming from the site of the blaze, which the governor said was in the town of Proletarsk.

“In the south-east of the Rostov region, air defences repelled a drone attack. As a result of falling debris on the territory of industrial storage facilities in Proletarsk, a diesel fuel fire broke out,” Governor Vasily Golubev said on Telegram.

“At 05:35 (0235 GMT), firefighting at the industrial facility in Proletarsk was suspended due to a second drone attack,” he added in an update to the post.

No-one was injured and firefighting efforts resumed shortly after, he said in a later post.

Proletarsk is some 250 kilometres (155 miles) from the Ukrainian border and some 350 kilometres from Kyiv-held areas of fighting on the eastern Ukrainian frontline.

The Russian defence ministry said it shot down five “aircraft-type” Ukrainian drones overnight, including two over the Rostov region.

Kyiv has repeatedly targeted oil and gas facilities in Russia since the conflict began in 2022, some hundreds of kilometres from its borders, in what it has called “fair” retaliation for attacks on its energy infrastructure.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised his forces for hitting oil facilities in Russia, saying the attacks would help bring a “just end” to the conflict.

The drone attacks come as Ukraine mounts an unprecedented cross-border assault into Russia’s Kursk region, where it claims to control more than 80 settlements.

WHO warns more mpox to come in Europe

WHO warns more mpox to come in Europe

The WHO on Thursday warned further imported cases of the new, more dangerous mpox strain in Europe were likely, after Sweden announced the first such infection outside Africa in an outbreak that has killed hundreds in the DR Congo.

The case recorded in a traveller in Sweden was announced the day after the World Health Organization declared the mpox surge in Africa a public health emergency of international concern — the highest alarm it can sound.

The UN health agency was concerned by the rise in cases and fatalities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the spread to Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

Sweden’s Public Health Agency told AFP on Thursday that it had registered a case of the Clade 1b subclade — the same new strain of the virus that has surged in the DRC since September 2023.

“A person who sought care” in Stockholm “has been diagnosed with mpox caused by the clade 1 variant. It is the first case caused by clade I to be diagnosed outside the African continent,” the agency said in a separate statement.

The person was infected during a visit to “the part of Africa where there is a major outbreak of mpox Clade 1”, state epidemiologist Magnus Gisslen said in the statement.

The agency added: “The fact that a patient with mpox is treated in the country does not affect the risk to the general population, a risk that the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) currently considers very low.”

The WHO’s European regional office in Copenhagen said it was discussing with Sweden how best to manage the newly detected case.

“The confirmation of mpox Clade 1 in Sweden is a clear reflection of the interconnectedness of our world,” it said in a statement.

“There are likely to be further imported cases of Clade 1 in the European region over the coming days and weeks, and it is imperative that we don’t stigmatise travellers or countries/regions.”

“Travel restrictions and border closures don’t work and should be avoided,” it added.

– 548 deaths in DRC –

The outbreak has centred on the DR Congo.

Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said in a video message that the country “has recorded 15,664 potential cases and 548 deaths since the beginning of the year”, with all 26 provinces affected.

The DRC’s population is around 100 million.

He said the government had put in place a “national strategic plan for vaccination against mpox”, as well as improving surveillance of the disease at borders and checkpoints.

The minister said government-level working groups have been set up to boost contact tracing and help mobilise resources to “maintain control of this epidemic”.

Formerly called monkeypox, the virus was discovered in 1958 in Denmark, in monkeys kept for research.

It was first discovered in humans in 1970 in what is now the DRC.

Mpox is an infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted to humans by infected animals but can also be passed from human to human through close physical contact.

The disease causes fever, muscular aches and large boil-like skin lesions.

– Vaccine drive –

The US Department of Health said Wednesday it would be “donating 50,000 doses of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved JYNNEOS vaccine to DRC”.

“Vaccination will be a critical element of the response to this outbreak,” it said in a statement.

And Danish drugmaker Bavarian Nordic said it was ready to produce up to 10 million doses of its vaccine targeting mpox by 2025.

There are two subtypes of the virus: the more virulent and deadlier Clade 1, endemic in the Congo Basin in central Africa; and Clade 2, endemic in West Africa.

In May 2022, mpox infections surged worldwide, mostly affecting gay and bisexual men, due to the Clade 2b subclade.

The WHO declared a public health emergency which lasted from July 2022 to May 2023.

That outbreak, which has now largely subsided, caused some 140 deaths out of around 90,000 cases.

The Clade 1b subclade causes more severe disease than Clade 2b, with a higher fatality rate.

PPP MNA appeals to army chief to save Sindh from dacoits

PPP's Jameel-uz-Zaman appeals to COAS to save Sindh from dacoits

MATIARI: Makhdoom Jameel-uz-Zaman, the spiritual leader of the Sarwari Jamaat and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Member of National Assembly (MNA) has appealed to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to curb the growing menace of dacoits in Sindh.

Addressing a ceremony to celebrate Independence Day in Matiari, Zaman lamented that Sindh was in the grip of “dacoit raj” (rule of bandits), and no one could move freely in upper Sindh.

The PPP MNA from NA-216 Matiari constituency claimed that the Sindh government had failed to tackle the crime issue and was helpless before the Katcha dacoits.

“I urge you [army chief] again that you should take the matter in your own hands,” he said.

Zaman urged COAS Asim Munir to visit Sindh and resolve the issue, saying that the provincial government was incapable of eliminating the dacoit menace.  He credited the sacrifices of the armed forces for the country’s existence and stability.

Makhdoom Jameel-uz-Zaman said that people of Matiari loved PPP but they had been grossly ignored.

It is pertinent to mention here that the law and order situation of Sindh especially of katcha area is worsening with every passing day as the dacoits continue to abduct people for ransom, while the police ‘failed’ to maintain law and order situation.

Police back on Bangladesh capital’s streets as strike ends

Police ends strike, Bangladesh, Dhaka

DHAKA: Bangladeshi police resumed patrols of the capital Dhaka on Monday, ending a weeklong strike that left a law-and-order vacuum following the abrupt ouster of ex-premier Sheikh Hasina.

Officers vanished from the streets of the sprawling megacity of 20 million people last week after Hasina’s resignation and flight abroad ended her 15-year rule.

Police were loathed for spearheading a lethal crackdown on the weeks of protests that forced her departure, with 42 officers among the more than 450 people killed.

Police had vowed not to resume work until their safety on duty was guaranteed, but they agreed to return after late-night talks with the new interim government, helmed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

“It’s good to be back,” assistant commissioner Snehasish Das told AFP while standing at a busy intersection directing traffic.

Student-led protests against Hasina’s government had been largely peaceful until police attempted to violently disperse them.

Around 450 of the country’s 600 police stations were targeted in arson and vandalism attacks over the past month, according to the national police union.

In the police’s absence, the students who led the protests that toppled Hasina volunteered to restore law and order after looting and reprisal attacks in the hours after her departure.

They acted as traffic wardens, formed overnight neighbourhood watch patrols and guarded Hindu temples and other places of worship, quickly settling the unrest.

Das said there was “no tension” between police and the students who had been performing their duties.

“Students have done a tremendous job in the past few days,” he added. “Our thanks to them.”

‘Heinous attacks’

Yunus’s “council of advisors”, the de facto cabinet now administering the country, said it had noted with “grave concern” some attacks on Hindus and other minorities.

In its first official statement on Sunday night, the cabinet said it would work to “find ways to resolve such heinous attacks”.

Bangladeshi Hindus account for around eight percent of the country’s 170 million people and have regularly been the targets of violence during periods of upheaval.

Hundreds have arrived on India’s border since last week, asking to cross.

The leadership of Jamaat, Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party, said it would meet with representatives of the Hindu community and other minority leaders later Monday in a bid to ease tensions.

‘Contest the elections’ –

Hasina, 76, fled by helicopter to neighbouring India a week ago as protesters flooded Dhaka’s streets in a dramatic end to her iron-fisted tenure.

Her government was accused of widespread human rights abuses, including the extrajudicial killing of thousands of political opponents.

But new home minister Sakhawat Hossain said the government had no intention of banning Hasina’s Awami League party.

“The party has made many contributions to Bangladesh – we don’t deny this,” he told reporters.

“When the election comes, (they should) contest the elections.”

Interim leader Yunus returned from Europe on Thursday to head a temporary administration facing the monumental challenge of steering democratic reforms.
