Indonesia landslide death toll revised down to 11: official

Indonesia landslide death toll revised down to 11: official

The death toll in a landslide at an illegal mine in Indonesia has been revised down to 11, with miscounting linked to the remote location, a local disaster agency official said Saturday.

The landslide hit a remote site in West Sumatra province on Sumatra island Thursday evening after heavy rains in the area, with rescue workers struggling to locate the dead and injured.

Search efforts were being hindered by the remote location, with rescuers including police officers, soldiers and civilians having to walk for hours from the nearest village to reach the area.

“The number declined, from 15 people dead to 11,” Irwan Effendy, disaster agency official in West Sumatra’s Solok district, told AFP.

No-one remains missing, Irwan said a day after officials reported 25 people unaccounted for.

“Due to the remote location of the landslide, which requires a 4-6 hour walk, and the lack of communication networks, there was a mismatched number of victims.”

He told AFP that 13 people were also found injured after the landslide at an “illegal” mine.

Unlicensed mines are common across the mineral-rich Southeast Asian archipelago, where abandoned sites attract locals who hunt for leftover gold ore without proper safety equipment.

Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season, typically between November and April, but some disasters caused by adverse weather have taken place outside that season in recent years.

Kate Winslet melds into a model turned war photographer in ‘Lee’

kate winslet, lee

Kate Winslet felt a deep connection to her role as the real-life World War Two photographer Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller in the film ‘Lee’.

“I found a lot of parallels between myself and her, I think in terms of the determination that she had and in terms of the ability she had to keep going and not taking no for an answer,” said Kate Winslet, who co-produced the film.

The ‘Titanic’ actor recalled a time during the development of the film when she was sitting at her kitchen table crying as she wondered whether she was capable of portraying Miller in the film.

However, each moment of doubt became an opportunity for her to feel even closer to the photojournalist.

A post shared by Fandango (@fandango)

“I would think to myself, ‘OK, what would Lee do?,’” she added during a Zoom interview.

After many years of development for the British biographical drama film directed by Ellen Kuras, ‘Lee’ will arrive in theatres on Friday, distributed by Roadside Attractions.

Miller was an American model in New York who traded posing in front of the camera for taking photos of the war for Vogue magazine.

She covered the Blitz, the 1940s German bombing campaign against the United Kingdom, nurses at an army base in Oxford, and even one of the first depictions of the military using napalm.

Her images of the war and the aftermath of the concentration camps, and being a boundary-breaking female war correspondent eventually solidified Miller’s place in history after the photojournalist’s work resurfaced after being forgotten for some time.

Winslet said that if it wasn’t for Miller’s son, Antony Penrose, most people wouldn’t know about the late photographer’s work.

“He went into the attic of Farleys House, where she lived and died, and found 60,000 negatives and prints that she had put into old Heinz baked beans and Daz cardboard boxes that she had stashed in the attic just in an effort to forget,” she said.

“Like so many people after the war who had trauma, they just wanted to put it away and never talk about it,” she added.

Miller’s son wrote a biography titled ‘The Lives of Lee Miller’ in 1985, on which ‘Lee’ is based.

“In the moments when I would think, ‘Oh, my God, I can’t do it,’ I would think, ‘I’ve got to do it for Tony, OK. I just got to keep going and doing it for Tony,'” Winslet said.

“He has this film made in his lifetime, and he’s 78 now and I’ve done it. So, I feel so happy for him, and I do feel very proud of myself,” she added.

PM Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan, Palestinians, Gaza

NEW YORK: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday strongly condemning the ongoing atrocities by the Israeli forces against the Palestinian people, called upon the international community to forge unity and demand an immediate ceasefire and the creation of the State of Palestine.

“The time has come when we all must come together and demand an immediate ceasefire and the creation of the State of Palestine as without that peace will not return in this part of the world. If this is allowed to linger on, then God forbids, things will become very very tense,” the prime minister told the reporters along with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after they held a meeting, on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The prime minister said he visited the Palestinian president to show Pakistan’s complete solidarity with the people of Palestine and reiterated the condemnation of the atrocities and genocide being committed by Israel in Gaza, killing young boys, girls, babies, men and women.

“I am here to convey the feelings of the people of Pakistan that our hearts beat together. We strongly condemn this barbaric act. During the last one year, 41000 Palestinian people have been martyred. Cities after cities, towns, villages, hospitals, schools and infrastructure have been razed to the ground. This kind of barbarism hasn’t been witnessed not only in the recent past but since ages,” the prime minister remarked

He said that the sacrifices, patience and bravery of the people of Palestine would not go to waste but rather would result in the creation of the State of Palestine.

In his remarks, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said even since before 1948, Pakistan’s position on Palestine had been unchanged as the country had extended the maximum possible support to the people of Palestine.

He said Pakistan’s support was not just limited to the students rather it maintained its pro-Palestine position in the international forums.

Putin orders Russian army to become second largest after China’s at 1.5 million-strong

Vladimir Putin Russian Army 2nd largest

President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered the regular size of the Russian army to be increased by 180,000 troops to 1.5 million active servicemen in a move that would make it the second largest in the world after China’s.

In a decree published on the Kremlin’s website, Putin ordered the overall size of the armed forces to be increased to 2.38 million people, of which he said 1.5 million should be active servicemen.

According to data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a leading military think tank, such an increase would see Russia leapfrog the United States and India in terms of the number of active combat soldiers it has at its disposal and be second only to China in size. The IISS said Beijing has just over 2 million active duty service personnel.

The move, the third time Putin has expanded the army’s ranks since sending his military into Ukraine in February 2022, comes as Russian forces push forward in eastern Ukraine on parts of a vast 1,000 km (627-mile) frontline and try to eject Ukrainian forces from Russia’s Kursk region.

Although Russia has a population more than three times larger than Ukraine’s and has been successfully recruiting volunteers on lucrative contracts to fight in Ukraine, it has – like Kyiv’s forces – been sustaining heavy battlefield losses, and there is no sign of the war ending anytime soon.

Read more: Putin’s options for Ukraine missiles response include nuclear test, experts say

Both sides say the exact size of their losses is a military secret.

Andrei Kartapolov, chairman of Russia’s lower house of parliament’s defence committee, said the increase in active troop numbers was part of a plan to overhaul the armed forces and gradually increase their size to match what he described as the current international situation and the behaviour of “our former foreign partners.”

“For example, we now need to form new structures and military units to ensure security in the north-west (of Russia) since Finland, with which we border, has joined the NATO bloc,” Kartapolov told Parlamentskaya Gazeta, the Russian parliament’s in-house newspaper.

“And in order to carry out this process, we need to increase the number of troops.”

UN experts censure Western support for Israel since Gaza war

UN experts Gaza war Israel

UN human rights experts criticised mostly Western states on Monday for continuing to support Israel despite what they described as a genocide in Gaza which might turn Israel into a “pariah” nation.

The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza as a result of more than 11 months of conflict has prompted questions about Western states’ long-standing political and military support for Israel, including from the United States and Britain which provide arms.

“Shockingly, in the face of the abyss reached in the OPT (Occupied Palestinian Territories)…most member states remained inactive at best, or actively aiding and assisting Israel’s criminal conduct,” Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the OPT, told a press conference in Geneva, repeating allegations of genocide.

Israel denies the allegations and says it takes steps to reduce the risk of harm to civilians. Albanese, an Italian lawyer, said she was referring to Western states as well as some Gulf nations and others.

“I think it’s unavoidable for Israel to become a pariah in the face of its continuous, relentless, vilifying assault of the United Nations, on top of millions of Palestinians,” she said, citing verbal and military attacks on UN facilities in Gaza.

Read more: Gaza rescuers say at least 18 killed in Israeli strikes

She also questioned Israel’s right to a seat at the United Nations, acquired in 1949. “Should there be a consideration of its membership as part of this organisation which Israel seems to have zero respect for?” she asked.

In response to her comments, Israel’s permanent mission to the UN in Geneva criticised Albanese. “She is not fit to hold any position at the United Nations, and this has been made clear by many,” it said.

In the past, her remarks on the Israel-Hamas conflict have drawn scrutiny, including from a US ambassador in Geneva who said she has a history of using “antisemitic tropes”.

Albanese was joined by three other U.N. independent experts who accused Western countries of hypocrisy and double standards, for example by being more vocal over perceived rights’ violations by Russia since its invasion of Ukraine than of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

They are among dozens of independent human rights experts mandated by the United Nations to report and advise on specific themes and crises. Their views do not reflect those of the global body as a whole.

Methane rising faster than other greenhouse gases: researchers

Methane rising, greenhouse gases, climate targets

PARIS: Concentrations of the powerful greenhouse gas methane in the atmosphere are rising at an accelerating pace, threatening efforts by countries to meet their climate targets, researchers warned Tuesday.

“Methane is rising faster in relative terms than any major greenhouse gas and is now 2.6-fold higher than in pre-industrial times,” said an international group of researchers under the aegis of the Global Carbon Project in a study published in Environmental Research Letters.

Methane is the second-largest greenhouse gas produced by human activity after carbon dioxide, with agriculture, energy production and organic waste rotting in landfills the major sources.

In the first 20 years its impact on the atmosphere is about 80 times that of carbon dioxide, but it breaks down quicker.

That opens a possibility to sharply reduce climate impact in the short term, but the researchers found that despite efforts to cut methane emissions that atmospheric concentrations of the gas are still rising.

Rising in most countries

An average of 6.1 million tonnes of methane were added to atmosphere per year in the 2000s. That rose to 20.9 million tonnes per in the 2010s. It hit 41.8 million tonnes in 2020.

“Anthropogenic emissions have continued to increase in almost every other country in the world, with the exception of Europe and Australia, which show a slow declining trend,” Global Carbon Project executive director Pep Canadell, and one of the study’s co-authors, told AFP.

The largest increases have come from China and southeast Asia, and were primarily linked to coal extraction, oil and gas production and landfills, the researchers found.

The La Nina weather phenomenon has also led to an increase in methane from natural sources, they found.

The drop in nitrogen oxides pollution in 2020 as transportation plunged due to the Covid-19 pandemic had a paradoxical impact: it is key in preventing methane from accumulating in the atmosphere.

“Mirage”

Rising methane pollution is running at cross purposes of efforts to keep the global warming under 2 degrees Celsius.

A “Global Methane Pledge” was launched int 2021 by the European Union and United States to cut global methane emissions 30 percent from 2020 levels by 2030.

More than 150 countries have signed up, but not China, India or Russia.

“Right now, the goals of the Global Methane Pledge seem as distant as a desert oasis,” said lead author of the Environmental Research Letters paper, Stanford University scientist Rob Jackson.

“We all hope they aren’t a mirage.”

China and the United States are preparing to host a summit on greenhouse gasses other than carbon dioxide later this year, raising the prospects for further pledges by governments.
