Israelis and Palestinians end dark year, with no end in sight to war

Israelis and Palestinians end dark year, with no end in sight to war

Israelis and Palestinians end a dark year on Sunday, with no end in sight to the deadliest military offensive on Gaza.

There has been no respite from Israel’s air raids, artillery fire or ground fighting with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, to the despair of Palestinians surviving the onslaught.

“We were hoping that 2024 would arrive under better auspices and that we would be able to celebrate the new year at home with our families,” said Mahmoud Abou Shahma in a camp for displaced people in Rafah, on the Egyptian border.

“We hope that the war will end and that we will be able to return to our homes and live in peace”, said the 33-year-old from Khan Yunis, an epicentre of the conflict in the south of Gaza.

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry says the Israeli military campaign has killed at least 21,672 people, mostly women and children — by far the heaviest death toll of any Israeli operation.

On Sunday the ministry reported numerous deaths in overnight strikes on central Gaza’s Zawayda and the nearby Al-Mughazi refugee camp.

The fighting began with Hamas’s October 7 attacks, which left about 1,140 people dead in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

The Israeli army says 170 soldiers have been killed in combat inside Gaza.

An Israeli siege imposed after October 7, following years of crippling blockade, has led to dire shortages of food, safe water, fuel and medicine in Gaza, with aid convoys able to offer only sporadic relief.

The UN says more than 85 percent of Gaza’s 2.4 million people have fled their homes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of the growing threat of infectious diseases and the UN says Gaza is “just weeks away” from famine.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday that Israel’s war against Hamas will last for “many months” — until the Palestinian militant group has been eliminated.

“We will guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel,” he told a news conference.

‘Every shred of hope’

As Netanyahu spoke, more than a thousand relatives and supporters of the hostages demonstrated in Tel Aviv to maintain pressure on his government to bring their loved ones home.

“I hope there’s going to be another deal, even a partial deal or some will be released. I’m trying to hold on to every shred of hope,” said Nir Shafran, 45.

Gal Gilboa-Dalal has been traumatised since the rave he attended with his brother Guy was stormed by Hamas commandos on October 7.

“I was there with him and he was taken away the minute I wasn’t with him. So I went with him and I came back without him and it’s like time has stopped ever since,” he said.

In Khan Yunis, medics at Nasser hospital described severe shortages.

“The hospital is receiving a lot more (patients) than its capacity,” doctor Ahmad Abu Mustafa said in footage shared by the WHO.

“The beds are full… and we are basically short on all sorts of medicine supplies.”

The fighting has put 23 hospitals and 53 health centres out of service, while 104 ambulances have been destroyed, the health ministry said.

In Zawayda, Palestinians pulled the body of a child from under the rubble on Saturday after an Israeli strike.

“We pulled (out) nine martyrs, who were members of a very peaceful family. Two adjacent houses were targeted,” said the area’s civil defence director, Rami al-Aidi.

Mediation efforts

International mediators — who last month brokered a one-week truce that saw more than 100 hostages released and some aid enter Gaza — continue in their efforts to secure a new pause in fighting.

US news outlet Axios and Israeli website Ynet, both citing unnamed Israeli officials, reported that Qatari mediators had told Israel that Hamas was prepared to resume talks on new hostage releases in exchange for a ceasefire.

A Hamas delegation was in Cairo on Friday to discuss an Egyptian plan proposing renewable ceasefires, a staggered release of hostages for Palestinian prisoners, and ultimately an end to the war, sources close to Hamas said.

Islamic Jihad, another armed group fighting alongside Hamas, said on Saturday that Palestinian factions were “in the process” of evaluating the Egyptian proposal.

A response will come “within days”, the group’s chief negotiator, Muhammad al-Hindi, said.

Asked about the negotiations on Saturday, Netanyahu said Hamas had been “giving all kinds of ultimatums that we didn’t accept”.

“We are seeing a certain shift (but) I don’t want to create an expectation.”

Fronts multiplying

The Gaza war has intensified tensions across the region.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels have repeatedly targeted vessels in the vital Red Sea shipping lane with strikes they say are in support of Palestinians in Gaza.

On Saturday, the US military said one of its destroyers shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from territory controlled by the rebels.

The US Central Command described it as the “23rd illegal attack by the Huthis on international shipping” since November 19.

CENTCOM said the destroyer had also responded to a call for help from a Danish container ship that was hit in a separate strike.

Israel has also traded frequent cross-border fire with Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement.

“If Hezbollah wants to extend the war, it will be dealt blows like never before, and so will Iran,” Netanyahu warned Saturday.

In Syria, at least 23 pro-Iran fighters — five Syrians, four Hezbollah members, six Iraqis and eight Iranians — were killed on Saturday in raids “likely” carried out by Israel, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Ngema died just as the 1992 movie, developed with legendary jazz musician Hugh Masekela, was making a return with a screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival classic section and a streaming release.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother, father, husband and a patriot, Mbongeni Ngema,” the family said in a statement.

“Ngema was killed in a head-on car accident whilst returning from attending a funeral,” in Eastern Cape province, the statement added. He was a passenger in the vehicle.

‘Sarafina’ made Ngema a pan-African music star. A stage version had earlier played on New York’s Broadway for two years. It was nominated for Tony and Grammy awards.

The film starred Leleti Khumalo, who had been in the stage version and later married Ngema, and Whoopi Goldberg.

In her latest outing on ARY Zindagi’s talk show ‘The Night Show with Ayaz Samoo’, Fatima Effendi Kanwar aka Areeba of ‘Adawat’ talked about her new serial and shared her experience of essaying a ‘much-requested’ negative character.

“I really enjoyed doing this project, because obviously there is much more margin in a negative role, to play with the character – unlike positive, which has more or less the same expressions throughout,” she said.

“I hope viewers also enjoy watching it as much as I did filming,” Effendi added.

Speaking about her character, the actor explained, “Initially she [Areeba] is not that way, she is actually very positive, who has become that due to circumstances created by people around her. This leads her to seek revenge from them, which is essentially what Adawat means as well.”

Effendi also mentioned that she has been willing to do such a role for a long time, but was typecasted as a naive, innocent girl by the directors.

Headlined by Fatima Effendi, Saad Qureshi and Shazeal Shoukat, ‘Adawat’ follows the story of vengeful Areeba who seeks to harm her family, after she is forced to marry her brother-in-law, following the death of her elder sister.

SC urges Sindh govt to compensate nullah affectees at earliest

Supreme court, Sindh govt, compensate, nullah affectees,

KARACHI: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday directed the Sindh chief secretary to compensate the affectees of families, who lost their homes in an anti-encroachment drive around Gujjar, Orangi Town, and Mahmoodabad Nullahs, at the earliest, ARY News reported.

These orders were passed by SC Karachi Registry while hearing a plea from affectees of Gujjar, Orangi Town, and Mehmooodabad nullahs. The bench gave 15-day time to the caretaker government for approval of the funds to compensate the affectees.

Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary, Commissioner Karachi, and other officials were summoned before the court to address the issue.

Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar seeks clarification from the relevant authorities on the status of the alternative homes initiative, to which the Chief Secretary sought ‘leverage’ from the court as the approval of the Cabinet is pending regarding the compensation to the affectees.

READ: Supreme Court directs to compensate Gujjar Nullah affectees in written order

“Whether the cabinet is involved or not, the court order must be implemented,” Justice Ali Mazhar said.

Mayor Karachi stated that the relevant authorities are currently considering two options, which are to provide the affectees an alternative plot with construction or provide plots with cash.

“The land has been allotted, and the anti-encroachment drive will be commenced after the approval of the Chief Secretary,” Murtaza Wahab responded to a question.

Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar reiterated the urgency, stating, “One will be given, another will come; it is your responsibility to vacate the land.”

The focal person of the Sindh Government explained to the court that the 600 victims – to whom the compensation cheques were not provided – did not have valid CNIC, some of them did not contact, and some are dead.

The Supreme Court directed to submit the list of the victims to the lawyer, expressing hope for progress in the coming days.

Mayor Karachi assured the court that a total of 491 compensation cheques are left, which will be handed over to the victims soon.

The court urged every possible effort to hasten the process of distributing the checks to the affected families.
