Rain emergency: CAA issues alert for Karachi airport

KARACHI: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Wednesday issued instructions for advance measures at Jinnah International Airport amid forecast of rain with thunderstorms in Karachi from March 1, ARY News reported.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), many cities in Sindh, including Karachi, are expected to receive torrential rainfall from Friday.

In its weather advisory, the Met Office said the heavy rain and snowfall may generate flash floods and disrupt daily life in vulnerable areas.

In a statement, the CAA directed the authorities concerned to adopt precautionary measures.

The wings of small planes be protected, the CIA directed, adding that as birds can enter the runway, additional bird shooters be deployed to avert bird hits.

The authority said electric wire joints be protected well and special measures must be adopted to drain rainwater from the runaway area to ensure safe flight operation.

“All concerned authorities are advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures during the forecast period,” reads the circular issued by the aviation authority.

Sindh declares rain emergency

Sindh’s Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Thursday declared rain emergency in the province after a weather forecast of a heavy rainfall in the province.

Murad Ali Shah presided over a meeting over the weather emergency and directed for high alert at all local bodies, administration and hospitals.

The meeting also declared half-day duty at all government and private institutions in Karachi tomorrow (Friday) due to likely rain situation.

“The people are requested to avoid going unnecessarily of their homes,” Shah said. “Rainfall is expected in Karachi by 2:00pm,” he said. “There are three to four spells of rainfall in the city tomorrow,” he said.

“The rainwater is expected to enter in Sindh from Khuzdar mountain range,” Shah said. He directed Commissioner Larkana to take all precautionary measures to tackle the situation.

“We have to keep our preparations complete with regard to rainfall warning,” chief minister said.

Director General Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Salman Shah briefed the chief minister. “Shahrah-e-Faisal in Karachi comes under water pressure in rainfall,” PDMA official said.

Chief Minister also directed the DIG Traffic to ensure better traffic arrangements in city.

Opium cultivation destroyed in Sindh

KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers Sindh and Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) in a joint action destroyed 21 acres of poppy cultivation in the village Bajak near the hilly northern districts of Sindh bordering Balochistan.

According to Sindh Rangers spokesperson, the poppy crop was destroyed in Bajak village in the limits of Ghaibi Dero police station.

The crop was destroyed, while the raids were being conducted for the arrest of the accused. The Rangers spokesperson further said, the poppy cultivation at 74 acres of land has been destroyed in various actions from February 24.

In the recent drive, said an ANF spokesperson in Karachi, the force conducted a series of operations in parts of Ghaibi Dero and Hamal Lake bordering Balochistan in the Qambar-Shahdadkot district.

“The ANF destroyed poppy crop in [the] coordinated operation with Sindh Rangers,” said the ANF official, adding, that the local police and district administration were there to support the action.

Instagram influencer shot dead by husband; CCTV video surfaces

Indian Instagram influencer Anamika Bishnoi was killed by her husband in Rajasthan, following an argument.

As per the reports from Indian news agencies, Anamika Bishnoi, a rising Instagram influencer with over 100k followers on her official handle, was shot dead by her husband, who was identified as Mahiram, in the Phalodi district of Rajasthan, India, on Sunday, after an argument broke out between them.

The gruesome incident was caught in the CCTV footage and has now surfaced on social media.

In the widely-circulated clip, Bishnoi’s husband Mahiram is seen entering the shop where she used to work and was sitting in the chair behind the counter when the argument broke out between the couple. It escalated quickly, and the man pulled out the gun and shot his wife twice in the neck before he escaped the murder scene.

She suffered fatal injuries in the close-range gunshot and lost her life.

Police officials reached the scene and started to investigate the footage of CCTV, installed in the shop.

Police suspect that the man killed his wife over the dowry case, going on in the Indian court, while the two lived separately.

In her recent outing on actor-host Ahmad Ali Butt’s podcast ‘Excuse Me’, Aima Baig spoke about her breakup with Shahbaz Shigri and revealed it was a mutual decision of both the celebrities involved.

“There were many hidden stories, happening behind the curtains, which people are not aware of, and I wouldn’t even want to disclose them, because there are people, both of our families involved, who I’m not sure would be comfortable [with me sharing],” she said, adding, “It was both of our decisions but it was mainly my decision to not do it right now, that’s what my decision was but I think that just flipped in the wrong way.”

When asked if both of them were ready while calling off their engagement, Baig added, “I don’t have any resentment, hatred, or grudge towards anybody. I personally think he was ready, I was just going with the flow because I really liked the person that I was with, and it was comforting.”

“I still respect the person even today, and we meet each other cordially,” she added.

“Maybe this public display [of our relationship] is what we were at mistake, we shared too much,” confessed the ‘Washmallay’ singer. “Everything was too public, and everyone cared too much about it, whereas, there were other heated issues in the world and in our country as well, still our breakup mattered a lot to people. Why?”

Baig continued to talk about the aftermath of their split and her being portrayed as a villain on social media. “One thing I haven’t forgotten to this day for which I still carry some resentment is that it was a mutual decision but only one person, one gender was singled out. When you don’t even know the story when you don’t know what was going on between two families or two persons… I put up one very respectful message which was received very strangely,” Baig expressed.

The singer also got honest about the suicidal thoughts and shared, “I am not going to lie, I was so adamant that I was going to give up my life. I was like, ‘I’ve lived enough, this is the end of my life and I don’t want to live anymore.'”

MQM-P decides to field Ali Khursheedi for Sindh CM slot

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has decided to field its candidate for Sindh chief ministership, ARY News reported on Sunday, citing sources.

Sources said the MQM-P has finalised the name of Ali Khursheedi for the Sindh CM slot.  It is to be noted that the MQM-P won 26 seats in the February 8 polls.

Elections for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Sindh Assembly are being held.

This was announced by Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani during the Sindh Assembly Session in Karachi.

KARACHI: In the run-up to the formation of the provincial government, the stage is set for the election of the speaker and deputy speaker of the Sindh Assembly after oath-taking of the members.

A session of the assembly expected to be convened on Sunday, with Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani presiding over the proceedings.

People’s Party’s CM candidate Murad Ali Shah earlier said that the Speaker Sindh Assembly and chief minister’s election will be held tomorrow and day after tomorrow respectively.

The People’s Party has nominated Ovais Qadir Shah as its candidate for Speaker and Naveed Anthony Deputy Speaker candidate for Sindh Assembly.

The MQM-Pakistan has nominated Advocate Sofia Shah and Advocate Rashid Khan as the party’s candidates for speaker and deputy speaker’s offices of the provincial assembly respectively.

Earlier today, Speaker Agha Sadruddin administered oath taking of elected Sindh Assembly members with PPP as the largest parliamentary group in the legislature with 114 seats.

MQM-P is the next largest group in assembly with 36 members, while the Sunni Ittehad Council have nine members, GDA-3 and Jamaat Islami one seat.

The PPP enjoys comfortable majority in the house, and it doesn’t need support from any other party to get its speaker, deputy speaker and chief minister elected.

Woman among three dead in Jacobabad firing

JACOBABAD: At least three people died including a woman in two firing incidents that occurred in Jacobabad, ARY News reported.

As per details, the first firing incident occurred near a bus stand in Dodapur police station vicinity which resulted in the killing of two people identified as Rahm Ali and Muhammad Amin.

In the second incident, a woman was killed by her nephew in vicinity of Panhon Bhatti police station.

Furthermore, SSP of Jacobabad police have taken notice of the three deaths and directed the authorities to arrest the accused immediately.

Last week, in the course of eight hours, as many as two individuals were killed, while five others were injured in separate firing incidents in Karachi.

According to the details, several firing incidents were reported from Karachi, leaving two dead and five others injured.

The rescue officials revealed that the shooting incident in Baldia’s Ittehad Town and Landhi Manzil Pump reportedly resulted in two fatalities, hinting that the nature of the incident appears to be targeted killings, as no belongings were taken from the victims.

The rescue sources claimed that the other firing incidents which left several others injured across different areas of Karachi occurred during the robbery resistance.

Court suspends arrest warrant for PTI’s Faisal Javed

ISLAMABAD: A session court in Islamabad on Wednesday suspended the arrest warrant for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Faisal Javed, ARY News reported.

As per details, the proceedings to declare the PTI leader absconder were stopped and the arrest warrant was suspended by a session court in Islamabad.

The senior civil judge Qudratullah heard the case and Faisal Javed appeared before the court along with his counsel Sardar Masroof and others.

Furthermore, the court also fixed the indictment of Faisal Javed in the next hearing on March 13.

On February 19, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Faisal Javed came out of months-long hiding and secured transit bail from Peshawar High Court (PHC).

Talking to journalists outside the court, Faisal Javed said that the voter turnout on Feb 8 was “unprecedented” in the country’s history.

He expressed joy over being granted bail and noted that everyone is going through testing times. “I hope that all oppressed return home”, he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that several party leaders are either in hiding or in jail after the May 9 saga and state crackdown on PTI.

Five charred bodies found in southern Mexico

ACAPULCO, Mexico: Five charred bodies were found Tuesday in a remote village in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero after reports of a confrontation between suspected criminals, local authorities said.

The state prosecutor’s office said on social media that police, soldiers and forensic experts went to the mountain community of Las Tunas to verify the reports.

“They located the bodies of five burned people,” the office said, noting the victims had not been identified.

The bodies were transferred to the state forensic medical service.

Local news outlets published images of a presumed confrontation between criminals that took place on Monday and left several dead.

Given the difficulties in communication and accessing the area, the prosecutor’s office requested the support of federal forces in launching their investigation.

Las Tunas is part of the municipality of San Miguel Totolapan, where in October 2020 an attack by a criminal group on the local city hall left 20 dead, including the mayor.

Guerrero, one of the most violent states in the country, has recently seen several clashes between criminal cells involved in drug trafficking, kidnapping and extortion.

The situation has prompted Catholic priests and bishops in the area to call for the groups to negotiate an end to the violence, an initiative endorsed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Mexico has recorded more than 420,000 murders and tens of thousands of missing persons since the end of 2006, when then-president Felipe Calderon launched a controversial anti-drug military campaign.

Senator Mushtaq demands CEC resignation, election probe

ISLAMABAD: Jamaat Islami’s Senator Mushtaq Ahmed has demanded initiating treason and breach of constitution proceedings against the chief election commissioner while demanding his resignation.

Speaking at the floor of the Senate JI Senator said,”those involved in election rigging are culprits of the nation”.

Senator Mushtaq Ahmed said that the bullet has abducted the ballot.

“The election commission should ask for forgiveness from the nation and the CEC must tender resignation,” he said.

Senator Mushtaq demanded proceedings against the CEC under the Article 6 of the constitution.

He demanded formation of an empowered judicial commission for election probe. “The judicial commission should initiate countrywide inquiry on the basis of form 45,” he suggested.

JI senator demanded withdrawal of the funds for expenditure in general elections adding that those involved in rigging playing with the national security and solidarity.

SC moved for judicial inquiry into Pakistan election ‘rigging’

ISLAMABAD: A plea has been filed with the Supreme Court (SC) against the alleged rigging during the 2024 general elections.

As per details, the plea was moved by citizen Mian Shabbir Ahmed through his lawyer Azhar Siddique with the Supreme Court’s Lahore registry, seeking a judicial commission to probe the rigging allegations.

It contends that widespread ‘rigging’ occurred throughout the country during the recent general elections.

The petition emphasizes that an inquiry into the alleged fraud be conducted in light of upholding the fundamental rights of citizens.

On Monday, the Supreme Court’s principal seat in Islamabad heard an earlier petition filed against the alleged rigging in elections. The petitioner, Ali Khan, however, did not turn up during the hearing and applied to withdraw his petition.

A bench headed by CJP Justice Qazi Faez Isa and comprising Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Musarrat Hilali took up the case.

“Such a prank cannot be played on the Supreme Court. Bring the petitioner from wherever and present him before the court,” Justice Isa remarked, adding that the bench would hear the petition.

The further hearing on the plea was adjourned until February 21 after issuing notice to the plaintiff via defense ministry.

In a post-match presser, Mohammad Amir revealed what Peshawar Zalmi’s captain Babar Azam said after delivering a good bouncer during the second game of PSL 9.

“We didn’t talk a lot. He is a good player. My role is to get the batter out with the new ball,” Amir said.

“I actually bowled him a bouncer and he said that the ball had skidded off the pitch and he couldn’t read it. I think he played a good innings and his wicket was the turning point of the match,” he added.

“He is a good player but my role has always been to pick wickets of the top batter,” Amir said.

“The first thing I noticed in him was that he is the guy I can walk in heels with,” said the ‘Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha’ actor with a laugh, adding that even Awan was done finding tall girls. To which, the ‘Meray Hi Rehna’ actor confessed, “I was fed up looking for tall girls and was not able to find any. Either, they would be tall or pretty.”

X (Twitter) services restored in Pakistan after 39-hour outage

After an outage of 39 hours, the services of the popular micro-blogging website X, formerly known as Twitter, have been successfully restored in Pakistan.

The outage, which started at 9 p.m. on Saturday, impacted users who reported difficulties accessing tweets and new posts. Attempts to load the site resulted in a ‘this site can’t be reached’ notification.

Downdetector.pk, a real-time internet and social media outage monitoring service, recorded at least 185 reports of X outages by 9:01 p.m., with the number increasing to 239 by 9:24 p.m. Users took to social media to express their frustration during the downtime.

Cybersecurity watchdog NetBlocks also confirmed the shutdown of X in Pakistan. This incident adds to a series of recent internet service disruptions, including social media sites, in the country.

The situation is particularly noteworthy given the ongoing context of the 2024 general elections, where most services have been affected.

Notably, X had previously experienced a global outage in May 2023, prompting widespread complaints from users worldwide.

PTI Independent MPAs of KP to discuss govt formation today

PESHAWAR: A session of PTI-nominated independents, elected as members of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has been summoned in Peshawar today at the Speaker’s House, citing sources ARY News reported on Sunday.

Ali Amin Gandapur will chair the session, who has been nominated as the next chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The session will consult over the issues related to formation of government in the province, sources said.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s founder named Ali Amin Gandapur as the KP CM on last Tuesday.

The former prime minister announced this during his informal media talk in his trial in Adiala Jail.

The PTI-supported independents won a landslide victory in KP in the Feb 08 election.

Gandapur’s political journey began with his election to the provincial assembly in 2013 on the PTI ticket.

He later successfully contested the 2018 general election of Pakistan and secured a seat in the National Assembly from Constituency NA-38 (Dera Ismail Khan-I).

Mr Gandapur was the provincial revenue minister in the first PTI government in KP and served as Kashmir Affairs minister in former prime minister Imran Khan’s cabinet.

Muridke: GT Road crash leaves seven members of a family dead

MURIDKE: Seven members of a family died in a road crash at GT Road here, while three persons were seriously injured, ARY News reported on Saturday.

Rescue officials said that a car carrying deceased and a truck collided at Ravi-Ryan U-turn owing to over speeding. The passengers of the car were traveling from Multan to Gujranwala.

All deceased were family members, identified as Zaheer Ahmed, his wife Irum, sons Ayan and Abdul Wahab, rescue officials said. Two relatives Shehbaz and Iman were also died in the road crash.

Three of the four persons injured in the accident namely Shamim, Naseem and Khadeeja, said to be in a precarious condition.

The dead bodies and injured were shifted to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Muridke. Later the injured were transferred to Meo Hospital.

The Gujranwala family with other relatives was traveling from Multan back to Gujranwala after attending a wedding ceremony.

The truck driver ahead of the car at Muridke GT Road suddenly applied brakes and the car went down to the truck.

Motorway Police said the truck driver’s mistake was resulted in the accident. Police has taken the truck in custody and searching for driver who fled from the scene after the accident.

Shah Mehmood moves IHC against conviction in cipher case

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vice chairman and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Friday moved Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the conviction in cipher case, ARY News reported.

On Jan 30, a special court established under the Official Secrets Act handed both former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi 10 years in jail in the cipher case.

As per details, Shah Mehmood Qureshi filed the plea against the cipher case conviction and urged IHC to declare the trial court’s January 30 verdict null and void.

The plea stated that the trial of cipher case was not proceeded as per the law and the process was violated in the trial which started on August 15.

It is important to mention here that the cipher case pertains to a diplomatic document that the Federal Investigation Agency’s charge sheet alleges was never returned by Imran. The PTI claimed the document contained a threat from the United States to oust Imran as prime minister.

Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi were facing trial in cipher case in Adiala Jail from last year for ‘distorting’ the facts of the diplomatic cipher.

Both the PTI leaders were accused of conspiracy to misuse the contents of the cipher to fulfill nefarious purposes.

Cipher case

The first information report (FIR) was registered on August 15 under the Official Secrets Act. It was registered on the complaint of the Home Secretary.

Former prime minister and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were nominated in the report, while names of former principal secretary Azam Khan and former planning minister Asad Umar were also mentioned.

According to the report, action also will be taken against Azam Khan and Asad Umar after the authorities reached the conclusion that they were also involved in misusing the classified documents.
