WikiLeaks says Julian Assange is ‘free’ after US plea deal
Julian Assange has been released from prison and left Britain, WikiLeaks said, as he reached a landmark plea deal with US authorities that brought an end to his years-long legal drama.
“Julian Assange is free,” WikiLeaks wrote on X of its founder, who had been detained in Britain for five years as he fought extradition to the United States which sought to prosecute him for revealing military secrets.
He has agreed to plead guilty to a single count of conspiracy to obtain and disseminate national defence information, according to a document filed in court in the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific.
A charter plane flew Assange, 52, from London to Bangkok, where it had been scheduled to stop for refuelling.
AFP journalists saw it touch down at Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport at around 12:30 pm (0530 GMT).
From there it is scheduled to fly to Saipan, capital of the US territory where Assange will appear in court on Wednesday morning.
Assange is expected to be sentenced to five years and two months in prison, with credit for the same amount of time spent behind bars in Britain.
This means he could return to his native Australia, where the government said his case had “dragged on for too long” and there was “nothing to be gained by his continued incarceration.”
The publisher was wanted by Washington for publishing hundreds of thousands of secret US documents from 2010 as head of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.
Since then Assange became a hero to free speech campaigners and a villain to those who thought he endangered US security and intelligence sources.
US authorities wanted to put Assange on trial for divulging military secrets about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Assange was indicted by a US federal grand jury in 2019 on 18 counts stemming from WikiLeaks’ publication of a trove of national security documents.
Former vice president Mike Pence slammed the plea deal on X as a “miscarriage of justice” that “dishonors the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our Armed Forces.”
Extradition battle
WikiLeaks released a short video of Assange speaking with people in what appeared to be an office and then boarding a plane.
Assange’s family expressed deep gratitude for his freedom, including his mother Christine Assange who said in a statement carried by Australian media that she was “grateful that my son’s ordeal is finally coming to an end.”
His wife Stella meanwhile thanked campaigners, writing on X that “words cannot express our immense gratitude.”
Assange met his wife while he was holed up in Ecuador’s London embassy, then married her in a ceremony in prison. They now have two young children.
Announcement of the deal came two weeks before Assange was scheduled to appear in court in Britain to appeal a ruling approving his extradition to the United States.
Assange had been detained in the high-security Belmarsh prison in London since April 2019.
He was arrested after spending seven years in Ecuador’s London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced accusations of sexual assault that were eventually dropped.
The material he released included video showing civilians being killed by fire from a US helicopter gunship in Iraq in 2007. The victims included two Reuters journalists.
The United States has accused Assange under the 1917 Espionage Act. Supporters have warned this means he could be sentenced to 175 years in prison.
The British government approved his extradition in June 2022.
In the latest twist to the saga, two British judges said in May that he could appeal against his extradition to the United States.
The appeal was to address the question of whether, as a foreigner on trial in America, he would enjoy the protections of freedom of speech accorded under the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
The plea deal was not entirely unexpected. President Joe Biden had been under growing pressure to drop the long-running case against Assange.
In February the Australian government made an official request to this effect and Biden said he would consider it, raising hopes among Assange supporters that his ordeal might end.
Emma Shortis, senior researcher at The Australia Institute think tank, told AFP that both Canberra and Washington had a “recognition that this had to end.”
“There was just no way this wasn’t becoming an issue for the (US-Australia) alliance,” Shortis said.
On the streets of Sydney, Nish Veer, a 41-year-old IT business manager, told AFP that Assange had “did something that angered a lot of people, obviously… but after time you just go should anyone be held in that sort of way?”
64-year-old retiree John Blanco said he was “very happy” Assange was returning to Australia after so many years. “I think he’s gone through hell, to be honest with you.”

Pakistan calls for action against TTP’s cross-border attacks
Pakistan urged UN Security Council that, despite promises, the Taliban government has not acted “decisively” to halt the cross-border terrorist attacks by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) that have resulted in hundreds of civilian and military casualties.
“The highest priority – for the international community, for Afghanistan’s neighbours and for Afghanistan itself – remains the elimination of terrorism within and from Afghanistan,” Ambassador Munir Akram, the permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, said in a debate on the situation in Afghanistan.
Pakistan, he said, has repeatedly conveyed to the Taliban — at very senior levels — to act decisively to end TTP’s attacks, disarm its fighters, capture and hand over the terrorist group’s fighters to Pakistan.
“Unfortunately, despite promises, no meaningful action has been taken so far. TTP safe havens remain close to Pakistan’s borders. Cross-border attacks have continued, including one by a TTP associate that killed several Chinese engineers working on the Dasu hydro power project,” the Pakistani envoy told the 15-member Council.
“The impunity which some of these terrorist groups seem to enjoy within Afghanistan poses a dire and direct threat to all of Afghanistan’s neighbours as well as to the international community.”
Ambassador Akram, therefore, urged the Security Council to call on the Taliban government to sever its links with the TTP and its associates; prevent them from carrying out cross-border attacks against Pakistan; disarm the TTP terrorists and and capture the TTP’s leadership and hand them over to Pakistan.
At the outset, he said Pakistan has consistently advocated for sustained engagement with the Afghan interim authorities to normalize the situation in that country.
While welcoming the Taliban’s announced decision to participate in the upcoming UN-sponsored meeting in Doha, Ambassador Akram underlined the need for both the international community and the Afghan interim Government to “be clear about the overall objectives they seek”.
“Unless we know where we are going, we will never get there,” he added.
For its part, the Pakistani envoy said the international community is obliged to help the 23 million Afghans who need urgent aid and to take adequate measures to bolster Afghanistan’s economy — including reviving the national banking system and restoring commercial activity.
The Taliban must also take steps to abide by its international obligations, he said, noting that “the world remains concerned” about restrictions imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan. “These do not conform with international law or the tenets of Islam”, he said, adding, “The AIG (Afghan Interim Government) is expected to ensure the rights of women and girls to education, work and other human rights.”
Pakistan, Ambassador Akram said, enjoys close bonds of ethnicity, history, faith, language and culture with Afghanistan.
“Pakistan has a national compulsion to promote peace, stability and development in Afghanistan. And we will continue to work at all levels – bilateral, regional and international and with the UN– to achieve these objectives.”
Opening the debate, Roza Otunbayeva, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), noted that the upcoming meeting in Doha, the third one in this format, is scheduled to take place in nine days and the Taliban have stated that they are preparing to attend.
“We hope that in Doha, key stakeholders will convene around the table, speak to each other face to face, reinforce the principles underlining the consensus to engage, and agree on next steps to alleviate the uncertainties that face the Afghan people”. But, she warned, Doha “has generated significant expectations that cannot realistically be met in a single meeting”.
While there is no substitute for engagement with Afghanistan, “it cannot be repeated enough that this sort of engagement is not legitimization or normalization”, Ms Otunbayeva added.
While the Taliban have maintained political stability, they continue to place severe restrictions on women, and there is little space for internal dissent.
Stressing the need for internal political legitimacy, she added that although more than $7 billion have been provided for humanitarian assistance, “Afghanistan remains beset by massive poverty.”

US backs direct Pakistan-India talks: State Dept
WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday reiterated that it supports direct engagement between India and Pakistan but will not tell them how to conduct those discussions.
State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said this in response to a question seeking his comments after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi for securing a third term in office earlier this month.
The diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan have deteriorated significantly since August 5, 2019, when New Delhi revoked the special constitutional status of IIOJK.
The two nuclear-armed neighbors expelled each other’s ambassadors and limited bilateral trade relations.
“We value our important relationships with both India and Pakistan,” State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said during a media briefing in Washington.
“As we have said, we support direct discussions between India and Pakistan, but the pace, scope and character should be determined by those two countries, not by us,” he added.
On terrorism, the State Department spokesperson said the US and Pakistan had a shared interest in combating threats to regional security.
“The United States and Pakistan have a shared interest in combating threats to regional security,” he said. “We partner with Pakistan on security through our high-level counterterrorism dialogue, including several counterterrorism capacity building programs, and we support a series of US-Pakistan military-to-military engagements.”
“We are in regular communication with the Pakistani leaders as a part of our partnership on CT [counterterrorism] issues, and we will continue to discuss regional security in detail, including through our annual counterterrorism dialogue and other bilateral consultations,” he added.

Babar Azam opens up on captaincy, disappointing T20 World Cup exit
Star Pakistani batter Babar Azam opened up on the captaincy and disappointing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign of the Pakistani team.
Addressing a post-match press conference, Pakistan captain Babar Azam said the team’s batting let them down at the Twenty20 World Cup and apologized to fans for failing to reach the Super Eight stage.
Pakistan fell to the tournament’s biggest upset when the United States, a tier-two member of the game, beat the 2009 champions via Super Over. Defeat by arch-rivals India then left Babar’s side with a mountain to climb to advance.
India and the U.S. bagged the two Super Eight slots from Group A while Pakistan finished third after Sunday’s laboured three-wicket victory against Ireland.
“Thank you so much for supporting us, and sorry for that performance…,” Babar said after the match in Florida.

“I know the fans and the team are saddened by this. It is not any one player’s fault. We all made a mistake.”
Babar had stepped down as captain of all three formats after Pakistan failed to make the knockout stage of the 50-overs World Cup in India last year, but was reinstated as white-ball skipper ahead of the 20-overs showpiece in the U.S. and West Indies.
Amid sub-par performances at the tournament, talk of rifts within the camp surfaced, while Pakistan Cricket Board’s chief promised “major surgery” on the team after their exit was confirmed last week.
Pakistan’s batting was a huge disappointment as they failed to make the most of the powerplay overs and could not get partnerships established.
“The pitches here helped the fast bowlers a little but I think overall our batting did not click,” said Babar.
“We lost two crucial matches even when we were in charge.”
All-rounder Imad Wasim has said the team needed a complete reset of their approach to white-ball cricket and Babar agreed.
“Every player has to think, because cricket has become very fast. With modern cricket, you must have game awareness,” he said.
“You know that the strike rate here is (low)… I think it’s about game awareness and common sense.”
The Green Shirts were knocked out of the group stage of the marquee event for the first time due to embarrassing losses against the United States of America (USA) and India.
They defeated Canada to maintain their Super 8s hopes, but the crucial match between the USA and Ireland was rained out, leading to the USA’s qualification for the next round.
Babar Azam’s side then registered a consolation victory over Ireland in their last match, with the star batter leading the run-chase with an unbeaten 32 off 34 deliveries.

T20 World Cup 2024: Bangladesh beat Nepal to claim final Super Eight spot
Bangladesh grabbed the final spot in the Super Eight phase of the T20 World Cup 2024 with a 21-run victory over Nepal on Sunday.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and his team joined India, Australia and Afghanistan in Group 1 of the Super Eight following their victory in Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Pace bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib was the standout performer for Bangladesh, taking four for seven as Nepal struggled to 85 all out off 19.2 overs in reply to Bangladesh’s 106 from 19.3 on yet another Caribbean pitch offering plenty of assistance to the bowlers.
Shanto praised the performance of his bowlers in another low-scoring match in the tournament.
“We are not scoring much but we know we can defend low totals if we can pick up early wickets,” he said.
Former champions Sri Lanka, who finished third in the group and did not progress, concluded their campaign with an 83-run victory against the Netherlands in St Lucia.
Sri Lanka amassed 201 for six with Kusal Mendis (46), Charith Asalanka (46) and Angelo Matthews (30 not out) leading the charge and the target was always beyond the reach of the Dutch team, who were bowled out for 118 from 16.4 overs.
“After bad first two games this win is very healthy for us,” said Sri Lanka captain Wanindu Hasaranga.
“The wicket was really good, we just wanted to put a 160-170 scores on this wicket.”

Israel army says four soldiers killed in south Gaza
The Israeli military said on Tuesday that four soldiers had been killed in fighting in southern Gaza the previous day, more than eight months into its war against Hamas.
The soldiers were “killed in fighting in south Gaza” on Monday, the military said in a statement, without elaborating on the circumstances of their deaths.
Israeli public broadcaster Kan said that the soldiers were killed in an explosion in a building in Gaza’s far-southern city of Rafah.
On Monday evening, Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said its fighters had “booby-trapped” a building in the Shabura refugee camp in Rafah.
“The Qassam mujahideen were able to detonate a booby-trapped house inside which a Zionist force was holed up … leaving members of the (Israeli) force dead and wounded,” the group said in a statement.
The Times of Israel reported that seven soldiers were also wounded in the blast, five of them seriously.
The latest deaths took to 298 the military’s overall losses since its ground offensive in Gaza began on October 27, it said.
The military has been locked in street fighting with Palestinian militants in Rafah since launching its controversial ground assault on the city on May 7.
Foreign governments, including US had opposed the operation, out of concern for the safety of Palestinian civilians sheltering in the city. Well over a million have since fled, seeking refuge where they can.
The Gaza war was triggered by Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,194 people, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.
Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed at least 37,124 people, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.
