Here’s how to use Instagram new live location sharing feature

Instagram, live Location sharing, InstagramDMs

Instagram direct messages (DMs) have become increasingly sophisticated. Over time, the platform has introduced numerous features that have transformed it into a comprehensive chat experience.

Currently, the company is enhancing its offerings with various new functionalities, such as additional sticker packs, the ability to assign nicknames to yourself and your friends, and the standout feature of this update: location sharing.

This new capability allows users to conveniently share their live location with friends through Instagram direct messages.

Here’s how it works

Instagram, in a recent blog post, has announced that users can share their live location with friends for a duration of up to one hour. Additionally, users have the option to pin a specific location on a map to help coordinate their arrival times.

This feature proves particularly beneficial in crowded environments, such as concerts or large gatherings, ensuring that friends can easily find one another. According to Instagram, live location sharing is restricted to private direct messages, applicable to both individual and group conversations.

Once a location is shared, it remains visible only to participants in the chat. Instagram has implemented several security measures to protect user privacy, including restrictions that prevent the forwarding of location information to other chats. Users also have the flexibility to cease location sharing at any moment if they choose to do so.

New Stickers and Name Changing

According to Instagram, there are 17 new sticker packs available, totaling over 300 new stickers that can enhance your messaging experience. Additionally, users will now have the option to select a favorite sticker within their conversations.

Another significant enhancement to Instagram Direct Messages is the introduction of nicknames for both you and your friends. This feature allows users to move beyond traditional usernames in their chats.

Nicknames can add a playful element to group conversations and can represent how you refer to someone in your everyday life. Therefore, if you have specific nicknames for your friends, you can now incorporate them into your Instagram DMs.

Instagram has indicated that while you can assign nicknames for yourself and your friends, these will not be visible outside of the chat. Furthermore, once you have chosen the nicknames, you have the flexibility to change them at any time.

132-year-old bottle containing secret messages discovered

132-year-old bottle, secret message,

An engineer has uncovered a message contained within a 132-year-old bottle while inspecting a 209-year-old lighthouse in Scotland.

According to details, Ross Russell, a mechanical engineer with the Northern Lighthouse Board, discovered the bottle while removing panels from a cupboard at Corsewall Lighthouse, situated at the northern tip of the Rhins of Galloway.

Upon finding the bottle concealed within the wall, Russell and his team employed a rope and a broom handle to extract it. They opened the bottle in the presence of the current lighthouse keeper, Barry Miller.

The cork was firmly lodged and required careful extraction using a drill, according to the team.

Miller humorously remarked to media, “We all swore ourselves to silence if it was a treasure map.”

The note, dated September 4, 1892, contained the names of three engineers who had installed the light at the top of the 100-foot lighthouse, along with the names of three lighthouse keepers.

Miller expressed his excitement to media, stating, “It was so thrilling; it felt like meeting our colleagues from the past. It was as if they were present with us.” He added, “It was like connecting with them. Instead of just the four of us, we were all there sharing what they had written, as it was tangible, and the style of their handwriting was visible.”

He noted, “You could appreciate their efforts. They had hidden it in a location where it would remain undiscovered for a very long time.”

The note reads: “This lantern was erected by James Wells Engineer, John Westwood Millwright, James Brodie Engineer, David Scott Labourer, of the firm of James Milne & Son Engineers, Milton House Works, Edinburgh, during the months from May to September and relighted on Thursday night 15th Sept 1892.”

Russell mentioned that he and his team would return the bottle to its original hiding place, along with a message of their own.

WhatsApp to roll out new light, dark theme colour

WhatsApp, WhatsApp business, new theme in WhatsApp

Meta-owned platform WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows for a light and dark main theme colour in the business application, currently available to selected beta testers.

This feature aims to enhance user control over the app’s visual presentation by enabling customization of the primary branding color, moving away from the conventional green to explore new alternatives, as reported by WABetaInfo.

In this iteration, the Meta platform has automatically designated new colours for both the light and dark themes.

Specifically, the accent colour for the light theme has been changed to black, while the dark theme now features white.

The previous light blue accent colour used in the WhatsApp Business app has been replaced with these updates.

Furthermore, black and white icons have been introduced for the app settings, chat information screen, and the business banner located at the top of the chats list.

Overall, the design and interface of both applications remain largely consistent, aside from the variations in accent colors.

Illegal farm fires fuel Indian capital’s smog misery

Illegal farm fires, New Delhi smog

NEW DELHI: The illegal burning of farm fields in northern India reached a record high this season, fuelling a toxic smog choking millions including in the capital New Delhi, government monitors said Tuesday.

The northern state of Punjab — an agriculture hub often dubbed as “India’s wheat bowl” — recorded 1,251 farm fires on Monday, according to the government-run Punjab Remote Sensing Centre.

Tens of thousands of farmers around the capital in Punjab and Haryana states burn their crop residue at the start of every winter, clearing fields from recently harvested rice to make way for wheat.

The practice is banned but law enforcement is lax, and it remains the cheapest and quickest way for farmers to prepare their fields for the next growing season.

India is the world’s biggest exporter of rice and a major exporter of wheat.

Since September, Punjab has recorded 9,655 farm fires. The previous highest number on a single day was 730, which was recorded on November 8.

On Monday, when the most fires were recorded, levels of PM2.5 pollutants — dangerous cancer-causing microparticles that enter the bloodstream through the lungs — surged past 60 times the World Health Organization’s recommended daily maximum in New Delhi.

Farmers are a powerful voting bloc and remain defiant about their role in the smog, saying they cannot switch to more expensive methods without substantial government support.

The ash-grey smoke from the fires contributes to the blanket of hazardous smog that settles on New Delhi every winter when cooler air traps pollutants close to the ground.

Various piecemeal government initiatives have failed to measurably address the problem, with the smog blamed for thousands of premature deaths each year and particularly impacting the health of children and the elderly.

City authorities on Tuesday extended an order for all schools to switch to online classes for all students, and added to restrictions on diesel-powered trucks and construction in a bid to ease the smog.

Authorities hope by keeping children at home, traffic will be reduced.

On Tuesday, air quality had slightly improved, with PM2.5 pollutant levels hitting 309 micrograms per cubic metre in New Delhi, according to IQAir pollution monitors, 20 times higher than the WHO daily safe limit.

A report by The New York Times this month, based on samples collected over five years, revealed dangerous fumes also spewing from a power plant incinerating rubbish from the capital’s landfill garbage mountains.

Coordinator to Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam on Saturday made a significant commitment on behalf of Pakistani government to join hands with provincial governments to safeguarding its children from the devastating impacts of climate change.

“Recognizing the vulnerability of the youngest and most marginalized populations to climate-induced disasters, we have pledged to prioritise child-centric climate adaptation and resilience measures in its national strategies,” she made these remarks after a crucial MoU signing ceremony between Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination and UNICEF held at Pakistan Pavilion on the sidelines of the COP29 global climate conference.

Top key representatives of the government of Pakistan along with the Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial governments affirmed their commitment to collaboratively protect the rights and interests of children embroiled in the quagmire of the impacts of climate crisis.

Federal Secretary Ministry of Climate Aisha Humera Moriani and UNICEF Deputy Executive Director signed the Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action, a pledge by champion governments to uphold priorities identified by children and youth across the world.

Addressing the event, Romina Khurshid Alam remarked that enhancing access to education, health, and nutrition services in climate-affected areas as well as investing in sustainable infrastructure to protect schools and communities from extreme weather events is top priority of the present government.

She also emphasised that recognising the importance of empowering children as key drivers of climate action is vital to involving them in climate action programmes, fostering a generation of climate-conscious leaders.

Pakistan also emphasized the importance of integrating children’s voices into policy decisions and fostering community-based initiatives to empower young people as active participants in climate action.

She termed the signature a significant step towards safeguarding the lives of 112 million children in Pakistan, who are vulnerable to climate-related disasters, displacement, and trauma.

“We commit to integrate child rights and needs into Pakistan’s climate policies and especially the Nationally Determined Contributions 3.0, which will be the focus of COP30 in Brazil next year,” said Romina Khurshid, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change upon signing the Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action.

Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) are national climate action plans by each country under the Paris Agreement. It contains efforts by each country to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

“We must ensure our children are prepared for the future they are growing into,” said Honourable Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister of Sindh Province. “Our education curriculum must reflect the realities of a world being altered by climate change and preparing our young people for a green economy.”

The Government of Pakistan and UNICEF are deeply concerned about the disproportionate impact of climate change on children. Rising greenhouse gas emissions and short-lived climate pollutants pose an imminent threat to their health, education, and well-being. Regular flooding and intensifying heat waves expose children to higher risks than those faced by children in 1960.

Constructive talks held with Pakistan officials, says IMF

IMF, talks with Pakistan, EFF review

WASHINGTON: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said it held constructive talks with authorities in Pakistan on economic policy and reform efforts to reduce vulnerabilities during an unscheduled staff visit.

The unusual visit from Nov 12 to Nov 15 discussed a $7-billion bailout within six weeks of its approval by the IMF board, but came too early for the first review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), due in the first quarter of 2025.

“We are encouraged by the authorities’ reaffirmed commitment to the economic reforms supported by the 2024 EFF,” Nathan Porter, the chief of the IMF’s Pakistan mission, who led the talks, said in a statement.

The constructive discussions on economic policy and reform efforts to reduce vulnerabilities would help to lay the basis for stronger and sustainable growth, he added.

The mission did not state the weaknesses, but sources in Pakistan’s finance ministry have said some major lapses prompted the IMF to intervene.

Among these were a shortfall of nearly 190 billion rupees ($685 million) in revenue collection during the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

Losses running into billions of dollars in the power and gas sector, the main hole in the economy, were also discussed, the IMF said, adding that structural energy reforms were critical to restore the sector’s viability.

Both sides agreed on the need to continue prudent fiscal and monetary policies, and mobilise revenue from untapped tax bases, the mission added.

Pakistan has struggled for decades with boom-and-bust economic cycles, prompting 23 IMF bailouts for the country since 1958.
