Alaska lawmakers push back on Trump’s mountain name change

Alaska mountain name change, Trump, lawmakers oppose

LOS ANGELES: Donald Trump’s order to change the name of the highest mountain in the United States faced pushback Friday from members of his own party.

Alaska’s Republican-dominated senate voted overwhelmingly against his plan to ditch the Indigenous name Denali for the huge peak, which Trump has rechristened Mount McKinley.

The president has unleashed a flood of executive orders in his first few days in the White House as he attempts to remake the US government.

Orders have included mass pardons for pro-Trump rioters, a federal hiring freeze and an attempt to overturn the constitutionally mandated practice of granting birthright citizenship.

But his order to rename the 20,300-foot (6,200-meter) Denali drew the ire of Alaska’s state legislators.

A resolution passed unanimously by the Alaska state senate on Friday urged Trump to rethink his plan.

“The name Denali is deeply ingrained in the state’s culture and identity,” the motion said.

“Residents of the state believe that the names of the geographic features in the state should be determined by state residents and representatives.”

The motion, which earlier cleared the lower chamber by a sizable majority, notes that state lawmakers called for the mountain to be known by its Indigenous name as far back as 1975.

Four decades later, then-president Barack Obama officially recognized that push and dropped the moniker Mount McKinley, which had been the peak’s official name since 1917.

It was coined in honor of Republican president William McKinley who served in the Oval Office from 1897 until his assassination in 1901.

The resolution by the state legislature appeared unlikely to change Trump’s mind, but was notable as a rare display of disobedience from members of his largely quiescent Republican Party.

Oscar hopeful Karla Sofia Gascon’s woes over a series of offensive social media posts deepened on Thursday after a diversity-centred Spanish publishing house dropped plans to reprint her book.

Karla Sofia Gascon, the first transgender woman Oscar nominee for best actress, seemed set for lasting fame after the narco-musical ‘Emilia Perez’ in which she stars won a record number of Oscar nominations for a foreign-language movie.

But last week’s unearthing of old posts denigrating Islam and George Floyd has unleashed a scandal that has harmed her reputation and the film’s chances of Oscars glory.

The Spaniard, 52, has apologised and says she is not a racist.

Dos Bigotes, a publishing house specialising in LGBTQ, gender and feminist themes, said on Thursday it had suspended the publication of a revised biographical novel of Gascon that first appeared in Mexico in 2018.

The firm ‘has always been committed to equality, inclusion and diversity… therefore, we also have to be consistent with our way of thinking’, it said in a statement.

“We do not share the statements Karla Sofia made… but we also have faith in something we told her: that the passage of time, vital learning and experiences can make us better.”

Gascon ascended to global fame at last year’s Cannes Film Festival after ‘Emilia Perez’ won multiple prizes.

PM Sharif, Hamza Shehbaz acquitted in Ramzan Sugar Mills case

Shehbaz Sharif, Hamza Shehbaz, Ramzan Sugar Mills case

A Lahore anti-corruption court Thursday acquitted Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif and his son in the Ramzan Sugar Mills reference, ARY News reported.

In 2018 the NAB alleged that Mr Shehbaz Sharif being chief minister and his son Hamza with the abetment and connivance of each other caused a loss of Rs213 million to the national exchequer by committing the offence of misuse of authority.

The court on Tuesday reserved the verdict in the Ramzan Sugar Mills reference after hearing the arguments from both sides.

Defense lawyer Amjad Pervez argued that the construction of the drainage channel in question was not directed by then-chief minister Shehbaz Sharif but was approved by the Punjab cabinet for the betterment of the area.

He further contended that the case against Shehbaz and Hamza was politically motivated.

On the other hand, anti-corruption prosecutor Mian Waseem stated that, in his view, the construction of the drain was justified.

He also highlighted that the complainant in the case had retracted, claiming that he had never filed the initial complaint.

The prosecution further asserted that the drain was built on the request of the late MPA Rahmat Ali.

The prosecution urged the court to make a decision on the acquittal request after reviewing the case records.

Background

The Ramzan Sugar Mills case was shifted to anti-corruption team after amendments in the NAB laws.

In the mills’ reference, the NAB arrested Shehbaz Sharif on Oct 5, 2018, and the Lahore High Court released him on bail on Feb 14, 2019.

The NAB alleged that Mr Shehbaz Sharif being chief minister and his son Hamza with the abetment and connivance of each other caused a loss of Rs213 million to the national exchequer by committing the offence of misuse of authority.

It said Mr Shehbaz Sharif had issued a directive for the construction of a drain in Chiniot district primarily for the use of Ramzan Sugar Mills owned by his sons – Hamza and Suleman.
