Cipher case: FIA submits challan against PTI chairman, Qureshi in court

ISLAMABAD: The FIA has submitted challan of the cipher case in a special court constituted under the official secrets act, ARY News reported on Saturday.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman and party’s Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi have been indicted in the challan.

The FIA pleaded to the court for trial and conviction of the Chairman PTI and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Sources said that former minister and PTI leader Asad Umar has not been named in the list of the accused.

Former principal secretary to the PM Azam Khan has become a strong witness in the FIA’s case. His statement under 161 and 164 has also been annexed with the challan, according to sources.

“The chairman PTI kept cipher with him and misused the state secret,” sources said. “A copy of the cipher given to the chairman PTI was not returned back,” according to sources.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi delivered a speech on March 27 and later assisted the PTI chairman. “Transcripts of PTI chairman and Qureshi’s speeches have also been attached with challan,” sources said.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has also submitted a list of 28 witnesses in the court with challan, sources shared.

Statements of 27 witnesses recorded under section 161, have also been annexed with the challan.

Incumbent Foreign Secretary Asad Majeed Khan, former foreign secretary Suhail Mehmood, additional foreign secretary Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, have been among the FIA witnesses in the case.

All persons involved in delivery of the cipher from the foreign ministry to the prime minister, have been named in the list of witnesses in the case, sources added.

Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain, who heard the case at the Attock District Jail under the Official Secrets Act 2023, extended the judicial remand of Imran Khan till October 10 in the missing cipher case, a classified state document.

Cipher case

The first information report (FIR) was registered on August 15 under the Official Secrets Act. It was registered on the complaint of the Home Secretary.

Former prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were nominated in the report, while names of former principal secretary Azam Khan and former planning minister Asad Umar were also mentioned.

According to the report, action also will be taken against Azam Khan and Asad Umar after the authorities reached the conclusion that they were also involved in misusing the classified documents.

The FIR stated that the former prime minister and foreign minister distorted the facts of the diplomatic cipher. “A conspiracy was launched to misuse the contents of the cipher to fulfill nefarious purposes”, it added. It further stated that former premier and top diplomat endangered the state interests.

The report claimed that former prime minister asked Azam Khan – the then principal secretary – to “manipulate the contents of cipher”. “The former premier deliberately kept the copy of diplomatic cipher, which was sent to the PM office”, it added.

Pakistan signs free trade deal with GCC

Pakistan and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) “initialized” a free trade agreement, the GCC said on messaging platform X.

The agreement was signed by GCC Secretary-General Jasem al-Budaiwi and Pakistani trade minister Gohar Ejaz.

Al Budaiwi said the historic economic agreement represents an “important turning point” in cooperation and would contribute to growth and prosperity in a way that serves the common interests of both sides, GCC said in a statement.

Al Budaiwi also stressed that GCC is moving forward with the file of free trade with other countries, the statement added.

The two leaders said that the agreement would further boost trade activities between Pakistan and the Arab countries.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan and the GCC signed a framework agreement to discuss the free trade pact in August 2004, but only a few rounds of talks took place.

The two sides resumed the negotiations in 2021.

Eswatini, Africa’s last absolute monarchy, votes for parliament

Eswatini, Africa's last absolute monarchy, votes for parliament

Voters in Eswatini, Africa’s last absolute monarchy, cast their ballots on Friday for legislative elections that despite recent — and deadly — pro-democracy protests are unlikely to change the political scenery in the tightly controlled kingdom.

More than 500,000 people are registered to vote in the impoverished southern African nation, where King Mswati III wields absolute power.

Some whispered “democracy” as they lined up outside schools and churches turned into polling stations — but without much conviction.

“We need roads, our streets are dirty, we need people to come collect our garbage,” said Busisiwe Matsebula, 75, as she waited outside a voting station in the capital, Mbabane, wearing a traditional dress and a scarf over her head.

Voters are to choose 59 members of the lower house of parliament, which plays only an advisory role to the monarch.

Polls opened at 7:00 am (0500 GMT) and will close at 7:00 pm (1700 GMT).

Formerly known as Swaziland, Eswatini was shaken in 2021 by pro-democracy protests that were violently quashed by security forces, with dozens of people killed.

But on Friday there was no sign of turmoil. Street vendors quietly set up shop on the sidewalks outside polling stations as voters came and went.

The results, to be announced within a few days, are seen as a foregone conclusion by the opposition, which has largely called for a boycott of the vote.

“They are saying that there are elections that are free and fair (but) there is nothing like that,” said Sakhile Nxumalo, 28, who heads the Swaziland Youth Congress, the youth wing of a banned pro-democracy party.

“We don’t take this election seriously because they serve the interests of only a few.”

Political parties are banned in the landlocked country between South Africa and Mozambique, and lawmakers cannot be affiliated with political groups.

The constitution emphasises “individual merit” as the basis for selecting MPs. While it allows for freedom of association, opposition groupings are often run from abroad.

Candidates were nominated during village councils by traditional chiefs close to the king.

Most are loyal to King Mswati, who holds all the cards.

 ‘The system shall stay’

In power since 1986, the 55-year-old is constitutionally above the law.

He appoints the prime minister and the cabinet, can dissolve both parliament and the government, and commands police and the army.

Acts of parliament need his seal of approval to come into force.

“We live in a dictatorship. If one raises his voice, the police come knocking at his door at night and charge him for treason or something,” said Thantaza Silolo, spokesperson for the largest opposition group, the Swaziland Liberation Movement (Swalimo).

Two opposition lawmakers elected in the last vote in 2018 are now in jail. A third is in exile.

“Monarchy is not a political system but a traditional system,” Moses Dlamini, 75, an adviser to the king, told AFP.

“The system shall stay as it is”.

King Mswati, has been widely criticised for his lavish lifestyle while nearly a third of the country’s 1.2 million people live below the poverty line.

Infrastructure is minimal in the country dotted by green hills.

“Life in Eswatini is terrible, terrible,” said Phinah Nxumalo, 58, who sells spinach and dried corn kernels, used to make a local type of porridge, a low-cost and popular meal.

Her stall is nestled in the bustling market of Manzini, the kingdom’s economic capital, where women in traditional garments shop amid piles of colourful vegetables and cheap clothes.

“Our kids are educated, we groom them but they’re staying at home because there’s no job. It doesn’t make sense,” said Nxumalo.

She does not name the king. Criticising the monarch can lead straight to prison.

iPhone 15 series overheating complaints flood Internet

iPhone 15 series, overheating complaints, flood Internet

Many Apple device consumers are complaining about the overheating problem of the newly released iPhone 15 series on the internet, including a correspondent of a website covering news and rumors about Apple and its products – 9to5Mac.

Ian Zelbo – an employee at 9to5Mac – wrote about facing heating problems on his iPhone 15 Pro Max while charging using a wired connection on social media platform X – formerly Twitter.

Meanwhile, the other users reported the same issue while not charging but browsing social media on their iPhone 15 models.

It is worth noting here that it is completely normal for the new models of iPhones to get hot during the first 24 hours as there is a lot going on in the background like iCloud backup from old phone or software installation.

A Korean based tech YouTuber – BullsLab – did some testing to check if the claims about heating problem are valid.

As an experiment, measurements were taken with the help of the Forward-looking InfraRed (FLIR) camera also known as a thermal imaging camera which showed the temperature of the phone raised as high as 46.7C or 116F.

The phone’s temperature reached as high as 46.7C or 116F, which is often happened while the phone was being used for tasks that required a lot of power like running the benchmarks and playing games on it.

However, the users are complaining that the iPhone 15 models are getting heated with very undemanding tasks like scrolling social media, switching between chat applications or watching reels.

Faizabad sit-in case: Pemra withdraws review petition

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court (SC) for the withdrawal of its review petition against the judgment delivered in the Faizabad sit-in case, ARY News reported.

Pemra has filed a petition in the apex court, stating that it did not want to pursue the case anymore.

The development comes a day after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) expressed before the Supreme Court its intention to withdraw a petition asking the top court to revisit the 2019 verdict against the sit-in by the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in Faizabad, Islamabad.

The application from Pemra came just two days before the hearing of the review petitions by a three-member bench led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and comprising Justice Aminuddin Khan and Justice Athar Minallah.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa including Justice Aminuddin Khan and Justice Athar Minallah will hear the Faizabad sit-in review case on September 28.

Faizabad verdict

On February 6, 2019, the Supreme Court (SC) ordered action against extremist elements in the written verdict issued for the suo-moto case pertaining to Tehreek-e-Labbaik’s (TLP) 2017 Faizabad sit-in.

The Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) held a weeks-long protest at Islamabad’s Faizabad Interchange in November 2017 against a little change in the oath lawmakers take. The court had taken suo motu notice soon after the protests.

The National Assembly had passed an amendment to the Finality of Prophet-hood (Khatm-e-Nabuwwat) oath for electoral candidates, drawing protests from religious groups in the country. The government had withdrawn the amendment that had stirred the hornet’s nest among many.

Digital torch bearer lights up Asian Games opening ceremony, video goes viral!

asian games opening ceremony, torch bearer, viral video

In a one-of-a-kind, high-tech opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, a CGI-generated torch bearer lit up the ceremonial flame.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

From the digital torch-bearer to electronic fireworks, technology took centre stage in the innovative albeit spectacular ceremony of the 19th edition of the Asian Games at the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium in the Chinese city on Saturday, as a smiling President Xi Jinping declared the multi-sport event open.

However, the highlight of the two-hour ceremony has to be the CGI-generated, transformer-like giant, golden torch bearer, made up of over 100 million virtual sparks, who ran through the streets of Hangzhou and crossed the Qiantangjing River to enter stadium and lighting up the cauldron with Wang Shun, swimming champion of Tokyo 2020 Olympic, as seen in the now-viral video, originally shared by Tansu Yegen on the micro-blogging site.

As reported by a local newspaper in the country, the digital figure, named Xiao Huomiao (meaning ‘little flame’ in Mandarin), has been modelled after a Chinese middle school boy, Gao Yu from Guangzhou city in Guangdong province.

According to the details, Gao Yu, of Guangzhou Yuyan Middle School, was picked by the organisers after a nationwide search for someone to don the CGI suit and portray Xiao Huomiao.

Reportedly, from over 100 million applicants, Gao Yu was selected for meeting the criteria of being ‘tall with good posture, [having] a sports background and strong arms’.

Speaking to a local media outlet, the boy said, “Although I did not actually appear, but to be able to participate in the opening ceremony and even light the cauldron was a really precious experience.”

‘Jawan’ director addresses similarities with ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

jawan, the dark knight rises

South-Indian filmmaker Atlee Kumar of Shahrukh Khan-led ‘Jawan’ finally addressed the claims of parts being copied from the iconic ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and his own ‘Mersal’.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

As his latest film grossed INR1000 crore in global ticket sales, director Atlee Kumar expressed his excitement for the feat while also addressing the criticism that the title received for scenes majorly being inspired by his own action thriller ‘Mersal’ (2017) starring Thalapathy Vijay and Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (2012) – the final instalment of his highly acclaimed superhero trilogy.

When asked about the elements from his film spotted by viewers in past hits, the award-winning director replied in an interview, “People will say that. I know people will say that, but I am not taking it from there.”

He continued to explain, “I have done Mersal, I have a wrestling scene in it, which is there in Jawan as well. I know that and it’s ok, both are my films. But when it comes to other films, for example, Bane from Batman. I want to cover the face of an actor in a film, which I want to reveal in the next part, so what mask can I go for? I have one half-skull mask, one full-bandaged mask, the entire film is about masks only, so I went with the mask that was designed by my production designer. That’s all.”

“It was nice. If they call it Bane, that’s fine, that is a good reference,” he added.

“In the process of creating things, of course, you will create something closer to something. If the intention is the same, if I am doing the same thing, then it is wrong. If it echoes, that’s ok. If it is a good reference, I am ok. I know I have been criticised for this for a very long time. I have been to court, I have won the cases, by honesty and merit. I go by basics, I don’t have an intellectual brain. I am not a brainy writer or a great director. I am very simple, I know my craft this much, fortunately, it is being translated well, I am happy,” Atlee stated.

It is pertinent to mention that ‘Jawan’, the pan-Indian debut of Shahrukh Khan co-starring Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Sanjay Dutt, Deepika Padukone and Eijaz Khan, hit the global theatres on September 7.

Made on a massive budget of INR300 crore reportedly, the action-thriller surpassed the coveted 1000-crore mark in its worldwide collection across the languages on day 19 of the release.

China slams US sanctions over Iran aircraft programme

China, US sanctions, Iran aircraft programme

BEIJING: Beijing said on Tuesday it “firmly opposes” American sanctions on Chinese companies and individuals the US Treasury Department says have connections to Iran’s drone and military aircraft development.

Washington last week slapped sanctions on “seven individuals and four entities” based in Iran, China, Russia and Turkey it said had facilitated shipments and financial transactions involving Tehran’s military hardware programme.

The United States accuses Iran of supplying Russia with drones, which have become a major feature of Moscow’s war in Ukraine and are in regular use in Syria. Iran denies sending drones to Russia for use in Ukraine.

“China notes that the United States has included some Chinese enterprises and individuals in the ‘Specially Designated Nationals List’ on the grounds of the so-called development of drones and military aircraft involving Iran, which China firmly opposes,” a commerce ministry spokesman told state broadcaster CCTV.

“The United States side should immediately stop its unreasonable suppression of Chinese enterprises and individuals,” he said.

“China will take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”

Drones have become a focal point of military strategy for Russia and Iran, both under heavy Western sanctions.

Last week US Treasury Under Secretary Brian Nelson said Iran’s “continued, deliberate proliferation of its UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) enables Russia, its proxies in the Middle East, and other destabilising actors to undermine global stability”.

French rapper MHD sentenced to 12 years in prison for youth’s murder

French-rapper MHD sentence murder

PARIS: French rapper MHD was sentenced on Saturday to 12 years in prison for the 2018 murder of a young man in Paris who was rammed with a car before being set upon by a mob and stabbed.

Five of his fellow defendants were also jailed over the killing, receiving jail terms of between 10 and 18 years, over what prosecutors said was a fight between rival gangs. Three other men were acquitted.

The pioneer of afro-trap – a mix of hip-hop and African traditions – MHD rose to fame after becoming a viral sensation in 2015.

The 29-year-old, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, was charged with homicide in January 2019 and imprisoned. He was released after a year and a half in custody as investigations continued, and released a new album.

As Saturday’s verdict was handed down, several women in the public gallery burst into tears. MHD hugged one of them, maintaining his composure.

Those convicted – who all pleaded not guilty – have 10 days to appeal.

During his final statement to the court, before it retired to render the verdict after three weeks of proceedings, he had again proclaimed his innocence.

“From the beginning, I have maintained my innocence in this case and I will continue to maintain my innocence,” he told the packed court.

The prosecutor had asked for an 18-year prison sentence for the rapper, acquittals for two of the accused, and jail sentences of 13-20 years for the others.

On the night of July 5, 2018, 23-year-old Loic K was rammed by a black Mercedes and then beaten up and stabbed by around a dozen people in a gritty part of the capital’s 10th arrondissement.

Although the rapper denied having been at the scene, a local resident filmed the incident from his window, and the Mercedes was quickly identified as belonging to MHD.

Other witnesses identified him by his haircut or a sweatshirt by Puma – for which he was a brand ambassador – according to investigative reports seen by AFP.

The car was found abandoned and burned out in a car park a day after the killing.

“A judicial truth emerged despite the law of silence,” said Juliette Chapelle, lawyer for the victim’s family.

The killing happened in the Cite des Chaufourniers, a low-income estate in the area that the former pizza delivery driver continued to frequent despite his fame.

The football-mad performer, who was born in France to Guinean and Senegalese parents, is best known for “Afro Trap Part 3 (Champions League)”, a song in praise of the Paris Saint-Germain football club.

He had made waves abroad, drawing admiration from global stars such as Drake and Madonna.

NASA readies for dramatic return of asteroid sample to Earth

NASA

The climactic end of a seven-year voyage comes Sunday when a NASA capsule is due to land in the Utah desert, carrying to Earth the largest asteroid samples ever collected.

Scientists have high hopes for the sample, saying it will provide a better understanding of the formation of our solar system and how Earth became habitable.

The Osiris-Rex probe’s final, fiery descent through Earth’s atmosphere will be perilous, but the US space agency is hoping for a soft landing, around 9:00am local (15H00 GMT), in a military test range in northwestern Utah.

Four years after its 2016 launch, the probe landed on the asteroid Bennu and collected roughly nine ounces (250 grams) of dust from its rocky surface.

Even that small amount, NASA says, should “help us better understand the types of asteroids that could threaten Earth” and cast light “on the earliest history of our solar system,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said.

“This sample return is really historic,” NASA scientist Amy Simon told AFP. “This is going to be the biggest sample we’ve brought back since the Apollo moon rocks” were returned to Earth.

But the capsule’s return will require “a dangerous maneuver,” she acknowledged.

Osiris-Rex is set to release the capsule — from an altitude of more than 67,000 miles (108,000 kilometers) — some four hours before it lands.

The fiery passage through the atmosphere will come only in the last 13 minutes, as the capsule hurtles downward at a speed of more than 27,000 miles per hour, with temperatures of up to 5,000 Fahrenheit (2,760 Celsius).

Its rapid descent, monitored by army sensors, will be slowed by two successive parachutes. Should they fail to deploy correctly, a “hard landing” would follow.

If it appears that the target zone (37 by 9 miles) might be missed, NASA controllers could decide at the last moment not to release the capsule.

The probe would then keep its cargo and make another orbit of the sun. Scientists would have to wait until 2025 before trying a new landing.

If it succeeds, however, Osiris-Rex would head toward a date with another asteroid.

Japanese samples

Once the tire-sized capsule touches down in Utah, a team in protective masks and gloves will place it in a net to be airlifted by helicopter to a temporary “clean room” nearby.

NASA wants this done as quickly and carefully as possible to avoid any contamination of the sample with desert sands, skewing test results.

On Monday, assuming all goes well, the sample will be flown by plane to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. There, the box will be opened in another “clean room” — the beginning of a days-long process.

NASA plans to announce its first results at a news conference October 11.

Most of the sample will be conserved for study by future generations. Roughly one-fourth of it will be immediately used in experiments, and a small amount will be sent to Japan and Canada, partners in the mission.

Japan had earlier given NASA a few grains from the asteroid Ryugu, after bringing 0.2 ounce of dust to Earth in 2020 during the Hayabusa-2 mission. Ten years before, it had brought back a microscopic quantity from another asteroid.

But the sample from Bennu is much larger, allowing for significantly more testing, Simon said.

Earth’s origin story

Asteroids are composed of the original materials of the solar system, dating to some 4.5 billion years ago, and have remained relatively intact.

They “can give us clues about how the solar system formed and evolved,” said Osiris-Rex program executive Melissa Morris.

“It’s our own origin story.”

By striking Earth’s surface, “we do believe asteroids and comets delivered organic material, potentially water, that helped life flourish here on Earth,” Simon said.

Scientists believe Bennu, which is 1,640 feet in diameter, is rich in carbon — a building block of life on Earth — and contains water molecules locked in minerals.

Bennu had surprised scientists in 2020 when the probe, during the few seconds of contact with the asteroid’s surface, had sunk into the soil, revealing an unexpectedly low density, sort of like a children’s pool filled with plastic balls.

Understanding its composition could come in handy in the — distant — future.

For there is a slight, but non-zero, chance (one in 2,700) that Bennu could collide catastrophically with Earth, though not until 2182.

But NASA last year succeeded in deviating the course of an asteroid by crashing a probe into it in a test, and it might at some point need to repeat that exercise — but with much higher stakes.
