China’s Shenzhou-19 astronauts return to Earth: state media

China astronauts, Earth return, Shenzhou-19

BEIJING: Three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth on Wednesday after six months on the country’s space station, state media footage showed, as Beijing advances towards its aim to become a major celestial power.

Beijing has ploughed billions of dollars into its space programme in recent years, aiming to fly a crewed mission to the Moon by 2030 and eventually build a base on the lunar surface.

Its latest launch last week ferried a trio of astronauts to the Tiangong space station, heralding the start of the Shenzhou-20 mission.

They have taken over from Shenzhou-19 crew Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze, whose landing capsule touched down in the northern Inner Mongolia region on Wednesday.

Pictures from state broadcaster CCTV showed the capsule, attached to a red-and-white striped parachute, descending through an azure sky before touching down in a cloud of brown desert dust.

Its occupants had worked on the space station since October, where they carried out experiments and set a new record for the longest ever spacewalk.

The crew were initially scheduled to return on Tuesday, but the mission was postponed due to bad weather at the landing site, according to Chinese authorities.

Wang, 35, was China’s only woman spaceflight engineer at the time of the launch, according to the Chinese Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

Commander Cai, a 48-year-old former air force pilot, previously served aboard Tiangong as part of the Shenzhou-14 mission in 2022.

Song, a 34-year-old onetime air force pilot, completed the group of spacefarers popularly dubbed “taikonauts” in China.

KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to introduce a unified and modern system for all ride-hailing services operating in Karachi, aiming to improve service quality.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Sindh Transport Department chaired by Sindh’s Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.

The meeting was attended by Special Assistant to CM Sindh Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar, Transport Secretary Asad Zaman, and Managing Director of Sindh Mass Transit Authority, Kamal Dayo.

The meeting reviewed progress on the establishment of Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers across the province and evaluated the performance of those currently operational in Karachi.

The provincial government decided to expedite efforts to launch an Electric Vehicle (EV) taxi service aimed at modernizing urban transport. Sharjeel Inam Memon emphasized that the introduction of EV taxis will not only update the taxi network but also significantly reduce environmental pollution.

“We are working to bring all taxi services in Karachi under a unified, modern system that ensures passenger safety and service quality,” he said.

He added that the integration would help enhance fare transparency, vehicle inspection procedures, and overall service efficiency.

The meeting also discussed various financing models to provide EV taxis to the public on easy installments.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, Sharjeel Memon announced that in the first phase, 1,000 pink scooters would be distributed free of cost to working women and female students.

Saudi Arabia-Hajj, Hajj 2025, strict penalties , unauthorized Hajj

RIYADH: The Saudi Ministry of Interior has announced a series of stringent penalties targeting individuals who attempt to perform Hajj without the required permit, as well as those who facilitate such violations.

The measures will be enforced from the first of Dhul-Qi’dah until the 14th of Dhul-Hijjah.

Under the new regulations, individuals caught performing or attempting to perform Hajj without a valid permit will face fines of up to SAR 20,000. This penalty also applies to holders of all types of visit visas who enter or stay in Makkah or the holy sites during the restricted period without proper authorization.

Stricter penalties are set for facilitators: a fine of up to SAR 100,000 will be imposed on anyone who sponsors a visit visa for an individual who violates the Hajj permit regulations. The same penalty applies to those who transport, shelter, or assist visit visa holders in reaching or staying in Makkah and the holy sites. AR Rahman charged with 2 crores in 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' copyright case

Indian music maestro AR Rahman and makers of historical epic ‘Ponniyin Selvan II’ have been ordered to deposit INR 2 crores with the court registry in the copyright case.

To Read Lifestyle Stories in Urdu – Click Here

As reported by Indian media, the Delhi High Court has charged AR Rahman and Madras Talkies, makers of the Tamil-language epic, with INR 2 crores in the ‘Ponniyin Selvan II’ copyright infringement case.

The ruling, delivered earlier this week, has directed the Oscar-winning musician and film production company to deposit the aforementioned amount with the court registry and has also asked them to pay INR 2 lac to the Dagar family in damages.

For the unversed, classical vocalist Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar filed the lawsuit back in 2023, alleging Rahman as well as the ‘Ponniyin Selvan II’ filmmakers of copyright infringement of ‘Shiva Stuti’, an original composition by Junior Dagar Brothers (his father, Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar, and uncle, Zahiruddin Dagar), for their song ‘Veera Raja Veera’.

Wasifuddin not only sought a permanent injunction to prevent the song’s use in future, but was also seeking damages and recognition of moral rights. He argued that the song’s taal, beat, and musical structure were copied from the Dagar brothers’ song, with different lyrics.

However, Rahman contended that ‘Veera Raja Veera’ was an original work, incorporating Western musical elements, with 227 distinct layers, whereas ‘Shiva Stuti’ is a traditional composition in the public domain within the Dhrupad genre of Hindustani classical music.

Presiding over the ongoing case, Justice Prathiba M Singh observed that ‘Veera Raja Veera’ was not only ‘inspired’ by but also ‘identical’ to the composition of ‘Shiva Stuti’.

Besides damages, he court’s interim order also directed the defendants to include due credit to the Dagar Brothers in the song across all online and OTT platforms.

Khushboo gets emotional talking about early struggles, loneliness

Khushboo gets emotional talking about early struggles, loneliness

Pakistan’s renowned film star Khushboo got visibly emotional as she talked about the early struggles of life and revealed that she was forced into films.

In her recent outing on a private TV channel’s chat show, Lollywood star Khushboo Khan, who did her first project as a child actor at a young age of 7, divulged that she never wanted to do films, but aspired to complete her education and become a teacher.

However, despite being the youngest of siblings, Khushboo had to agree to her mother’s wish to act in her friend’s film, due to the financial struggles of their family.

“I raised my siblings, their kids, and even our relatives. I had a lot of responsibilities to shoulder, so I was compelled to work,” she shared. “I realised that when one person takes the initiative, they must stay committed to it. I had to sacrifice myself. And now, Maa Shaa Allah, everyone else is settled, though I am alone.”

Further speaking about the tragedies of her life, Khushboo added, “It feels as if everything I’ve done has gone to waste. I’ve made many sacrifices, only to receive bad things in return. And that shattered me horribly. I’ve loved people dearly. If I made someone a friend, I would suffer for it. Even relatives – I don’t care if they hold a grudge against me after this – have treated me badly. I’ve loved in pieces, held the other person in reverence, and understood afterwards what’s been happening to me. Then it was just me, my home, my kids, and a broken heart.”

“This smiling, blooming face is for show. Whatever lies inside, we can’t show that to anyone,” she confessed.

“This is all practical. It has happened to me. My friends, my relatives, and so many other people have done this to me. I’ve benefited a lot of people, though I haven’t been so lucky myself,” Khushboo concluded.

Pahalgam attack: Suspicions raised over India’s false flag operation

Pahalgam, Kashmir, attack, false flag

ISLAMABAD: Some serious questions have been raised over the attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir as some calling it a false flag operation

The BJP-led Narendra Modi government is facing growing scrutiny over inconsistencies in the official narrative regarding the attack.

Despite claims of eliminating attackers in the incident, the Indian government has not released any images or video footage of the bodies of those allegedly killed.

One of the most baffling elements of the Pahalgam incident is how such an attack was executed in broad daylight at a highly secured tourist site, despite the presence of 800,000 Indian troops deployed across occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Critics ask how militants allegedly crossed the heavily militarized Line of Control and traveled 400 kilometers undetected.

Adding to the controversy, Indian mainstream media — often referred to as “Godi media” due to its perceived pro-government stance — has been broadcasting a morphed image of a woman. In the altered image, a man appears to be lying down without any visible signs of injury or blood, further fueling skepticism.

Observers have also noted that within minutes of the incident, social media accounts affiliated with the India’s intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), unleashed a premeditated campaign blaming Pakistan, relying on emotionally charged narratives rather than verified facts.

The suspicious timing of this coordinated anti-Pakistan propaganda has triggered debate about whether the social media blitz was pre-planned.

Critics are also questioning why the Modi administration, if confident about Pakistan’s alleged involvement, has failed to present concrete evidence to the international community.

India has not presented any proof of equipment, intercepted calls, or verified visual or forensic evidence recovered from the alleged attackers.

Analysts argue that it is not uncommon for India to produce fabricated or delayed “evidence” after such incidents. This pattern, they say, is part of a broader history of false flag operations aimed at influencing domestic or international opinion.

This attack also coincided with key international engagements, prompting speculation that such events are staged to draw attention or influence diplomatic narratives.

Gold price hits record high on trade war woes

Gold Rate Today International Market- April 21, 2025

Gold price scaled a record peak on Monday, spurred by concerns over global economic growth amid the U.S.-Sino trade war, while a weaker dollar further boosted the rally.

Spot gold price advanced 1.4% to $3,373.70 an ounce as of 0432 GMT after hitting a record high of $3,385.08 earlier in the session.

U.S. gold futures firmed 1.8% to $3,386.50. The dollar index hit a three-year low, making gold more attractive for other currency holders.

“Fundamentally, markets are pricing in heightened geopolitical risks, driven by U.S. tariff tensions and stagflation concerns, while resilient central bank demand offers an added tailwind for prices as well,” said IG market strategist Yeap Jun Rong.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced “reciprocal tariffs” on dozens of countries on April 2, and while his administration paused levies for some countries, it has ratcheted its trade battle with China.

On Monday, China warned countries against striking a broader economic deal with the U.S. at its expense, a move Trump is reportedly seeking from countries looking for tariff reductions or exemptions.

On the geopolitical front, Russia and Ukraine accused each other of thousands of attacks that violated the one-day Easter ceasefire declared by President Vladimir Putin, with the Kremlin saying there was no order to extend the pause in frontline fighting. These issues bode well for the safe-haven bullion.

Read More: Gold rates in Pakistan today – 19 April 2025

However, gold’s relative strength index (RSI) stands at 75, indicating that the metal is overbought.

“The next potential milestone for gold could be around the $3,500 level, though positioning may appear crowded in the near term and technical indicators suggest near-term overbought conditions,” Rong said.

Spot silver added 0.4% to $32.71 an ounce, platinum gained 0.3% to $969.65, while palladium fell 0.5% to $957.68.

For centuries, gold has remained a prized precious metal, holding a crucial place in the global economy.

Its worth comes from its rarity, resilience, and universal allure. Often seen as a safe-haven asset, gold is used to safeguard wealth during economic uncertainty.

Investors and central banks hold gold reserves to diversify portfolios and shield against inflation and currency volatility.

Gold’s rate is shaped by numerous factors. Geopolitical tensions or concerns about a severe economic downturn can rapidly drive up gold prices due to its safe-haven appeal.

As a non-yielding asset, gold often rises when interest rates fall, while higher borrowing costs tend to pressure the yellow metal downward.

DHL to suspend global shipments of over $800 to US consumers

DHL,-suspends,-US-consumers,-global-shipments

DHL Express, a division of Germany’s Deutsche Post (DHLn.DE), said it would suspend global business-to-consumer shipments worth over $800 to individuals in the United States from April 21, as US customs regulatory changes have lengthened clearance.

The notice on the company website was not dated, but its metadata showed it was compiled on Saturday.

DHL blamed the halt on new US customs rules which require formal entry processing on all shipments worth over $800. The minimum had been $2,500 until a change on April 5.

DHL said business-to-business shipments would not be suspended but could face delays. Shipments under $800 to either businesses or consumers were not affected by the changes.

DHL said last week in response to Reuters questions that it would continue to process shipments from Hong Kong to the United States “in accordance with the applicable customs rules and regulations” and would “work with our customers to help them understand and adapt to the changes that are planned for May 2.”

That came after Hongkong Post said last week it had suspended mail services for goods sent by sea to the United States, accusing the US of “bullying” after Washington cancelled tariff-free trade provisions for packages from China and Hong Kong.

Pakistan partners with IFC to boost investment in EVs

Pakistan, IFC, EVs, electric vehicles

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Industries and Production has signed a cooperation agreement with the International Finance Corporation that will promote investment in electric two and three-wheeler vehicles (EVs) in Pakistan.

This advisory project will support policy, regulatory, and standards-related reforms to create an enabling environment for investment across the e2/3Ws value chain, helping to fill market gaps and remove legal and regulatory barriers.

As part of the partnership, IFC will provide technical implementation support and work with key regulators including the Engineering Development Board, National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, and Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority to build institutional capacity and streamline the development of the e-2/3Ws market in Pakistan.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior government officials, policymakers, industry experts, and development partners.

Speaking on the occasion, Special Assistant to Prime Minister for Industries and Production Division Haroon Akhtar Khan said a conducive policy and regulatory framework will encourage local manufacturing and enable the uptake of electric two and three-wheeler vehicles EVs.

He emphasized the need for concerted action to catalyze the adoption of electric vehicles in the country.

He noted that priority should be given to e-2/3Ws and electric buses, given their prevalence and socio-economic importance.

“Without improving this framework, it is highly unlikely that the national targets set for electric vehicle adoption will be met,” Mr. Khan noted, adding that focus areas must include localization of production, aggregated procurement, and mobilization of affordable financing through risk-sharing instruments.

Mr. Saif Anjum, Secretary of the Ministry of Industries and Production, highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership, saying, “With over 23 million two- and three-wheelers currently on the road, sustainable transportation is not an option—it’s a necessity. This collaboration with IFC will help unlock investment opportunities and catalyze the transition to cleaner mobility.”

IFC Country Manager for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Zeeshan Sheikh, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to reducing Pakistan’s dependency on imported fossil fuels and enhancing urban air quality. “This project supports Pakistan’s broader sustainability goals and aligns with the World Bank Group’s 10-year Country Partnership Framework by promoting innovative, energy-efficient transport solutions,” he said.

The initiative will also aid in the implementation of the National Electric Vehicle Policy (NEVP) 2019, which targets 30% of vehicles running on electricity by 2030. Funded by the CIFPAK facility—a climate-focused blended finance program managed by IFC with support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office—the project is part of a joint IFC-World Bank e-mobility platform to foster private sector investment in green transport.

Hamas says it is ready to release all hostages for an end to Gaza war

Hamas, Gaza, Israeli hostages, Gaza war

Hamas wants a comprehensive deal to end the war in Gaza and swap all Israeli hostages for Palestinians jailed in Israel, a senior official from the Palestinian fighter group said, rejecting Israel’s offer of an interim truce.

In a televised speech, Khalil Al-Hayya, the group’s Gaza chief who leads its negotiating team, said the group would no longer agree to interim deals, adopting a position that Israel is unlikely to accept and potentially further delaying an end to the devastating attacks that restarted in recent weeks.

Instead, Hayya said Hamas was ready to immediately engage in “comprehensive package negotiations” to release all remaining hostages in its custody in return for an end to the Gaza war, the release of Palestinians jailed by Israel, and the reconstruction of Gaza.

“Netanyahu and his government use partial agreements as a cover for their political agenda, which is based on continuing the war of extermination and starvation, even if the price is sacrificing all his prisoners (hostages),” said Hayya, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“We will not be part of passing this policy.”

Egyptian mediators have been working to revive the January ceasefire agreement that halted fighting in Gaza before it broke down last month, but there has been little sign of progress with Israel violating the terms of the deal.

“Hamas’s comments demonstrate they are not interested in peace but perpetual violence. The terms made by the Trump Administration have not changed: release the hostages or face hell,” said National Security Council spokesperson James Hewitt.

The latest round of talks on Monday in Cairo to restore the ceasefire and free Israeli hostages ended with no apparent breakthrough, Palestinian and Egyptian sources said.

Israel had proposed a 45-day truce in Gaza to allow hostage releases and potentially begin indirect talks to end the war. Hamas has already rejected one of its conditions – that it lay down its arms. In his speech, Hayya accused Israel of offering a counterproposal with “impossible conditions.”

Hamas released 38 hostages under a ceasefire that began on January 19. In March, Israel’s military resumed its ground and aerial offensive on Gaza, abandoning the ceasefire after Hamas rejected proposals to extend the truce without ending the war.

Israeli officials say that the offensive will continue until the remaining 59 hostages are freed and Gaza is demilitarized. Hamas insists it will free hostages only as part of a deal to end the war and has rejected demands to lay down its arms.

ISRAELI STRIKES

On Tuesday, the armed wing of Hamas armed said the group had lost contact with fighters holding Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander after the Israeli army attacked their hideout. Alexander is a New Jersey native and a 21-year-old soldier in the Israeli army.

The armed wing later released a video warning hostages’ families that their “children will return in black coffins with their bodies torn apart from shrapnel from your army.”

Israeli military strikes killed at least 32 Palestinians, including women and children, across the Gaza Strip on Thursday, local health authorities said.

One of those strikes killed six people and wounded several others at a UN-run school in Jabalia in northern Gaza Strip. The Israeli military said the strike targeted a Hamas command center.

The war was triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies.

Since then, more than 51,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive, according to local health authorities.

Kenyan agents bust plot to smuggle giant ants for sale to foreign insect lovers

ants-ant-smuggling-Kenya-four-arrest

Four smugglers caught trying to transport thousands of live ants out of Kenya for sale on exotic pet markets in Europe and Asia will be sentenced for trafficking wildlife in a case being hailed as a milestone by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

The KWS said authorities had intercepted live queen ants, including from the sought-after Messor Cephalotes species also known as the Giant African Harvester Ant, concealed in modified test tubes and syringes.

“Investigations revealed that the test tubes had been designed to sustain the ants for up to two months and evade airport security detection,” the KWS said in a statement, describing this as “premeditated and well-executed”.

While some people may see ants as a picnic-ruining nuisance, aficionados enjoy keeping them in formicariums, transparent cases where they can watch them building complex colonies.

A court document seen by Reuters stated that the authorities had intercepted about 5,000 queens packed in 2,244 containers, with a street value of about 1 million Kenyan shillings ($7,800).

Two Belgians, one Vietnamese and one Kenyan pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of illegal possession and trafficking of live wildlife and appeared again on Tuesday at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Court.

“We did not come here to break any laws. By accident and stupidity we did,” said David Lornoy, one of the Belgian smugglers, as he asked the court to show leniency.

The court adjourned the case until April 23, when it will consider pre-sentencing reports from the KWS, National Museums of Kenya and the probation officer. The smugglers are in custody.

One source in the ant trade, who asked not to be named because it is a small world and they did not wish to speak for others, said suppliers needed a licence from the KWS and a health certificate in order to export Messor Cephalotes.

The source said the species, native to Kenya, was much in demand and hard to obtain.

The KWS trumpeted the case as a landmark in the fight against biopiracy because it involved the attempted export of Kenya’s genetic resources without prior informed consent or benefit-sharing, in direct violation of the law.

“This unprecedented case signals a shift in trafficking trends – from iconic large mammals to lesser-known yet ecologically critical species,” it said in a statement.

The specialist British retailer AntsRUs described the species as “truly amazing to visually observe”.

“Messor Cephalotes are many people’s dream species. Queens are around 20-24mm long and have a beautiful red and brown/black coloration,” it said.

AntsRUs lists the price of a live queen from the species as 99.99 pounds ($132.44), although they are currently out of stock.

Pakistan’s exports to US rise by 10.4%

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s exports to the United States increased by 10.4% during the first eight months of the current fiscal year.

According to official data, exports to North America rose by 9.7%, reaching 4.2 billion dollars.

A large portion, around 94% of Pakistan’s exports to the U.S. comprised textiles and garments, highlighting the sector’s key role in the country’s export economy.

The increase is attributed to improved trade facilitation under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) and higher demand for Pakistani goods in the U.S. market.

Government reforms in trade policy, along with SIFC support, have played a key role in this growth.

The rise in exports is seen as a positive sign for Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves and the recovery of its export sector.

Pakistani clerics issue fatwa calling for Jihad against Israel

Pakistani clerics, fatwa, Jihad, Israel

ISLAMABAD: The most prominent Islamic scholars in Pakistan have issued a fatwa, or Islamic decree, calling for jihad against Israel, citing the atrocities in Gaza and the suffering of Palestinians.

Mufti Taqi Usmani and Mufti Muhammad Muneeb ur Rehman emphasized the need for armed jihad, urging Muslim governments to take concrete action in support of Palestinians.

Mufti Taqi Usmani stated that jihad for Gaza has become obligatory upon Muslim governments, criticizing the lack of practical support for Palestinian Mujahideen.

He questioned the purpose of the armies and weapons of Muslim countries, when 50 thousand Palestinian Muslims were killed in Gaza in front of us.

“What is the purpose of our armies and weapons when over 50,000 Palestinian Muslims have been martyred in Gaza right before our eyes?” he asked. “We have failed to take practical steps to support the Palestinian Mujahideen. Instead of Islamabad, we should have been gathered in Gaza.”

He lamented the Muslim Ummah’s failure to protect the Al-Aqsa Mosque and support Palestinian fighters, stating that Muslim nations are limited to organizing conferences and passing resolutions without real impact.
