Illegal parking: SHC seeks report from Sindh govt, DIG Traffic

Illegal parking, SHC, seeks report, Sindh govt, DIG Traffic

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday sought a report from the provincial government and the DIG Traffic to address the issue of illegal parking across the metropolis, ARY News reported.

To address the issue of charging illegal parking fees and illegal parking, a hearing was held in Sindh High Court (SHC) where the advocate of KMC and petitioner presented before the court.

The advocate petitioner highlighted the double parking issues across Karachi, after which the court directed the petitioner to pinpoint areas where double parking is very common.

During the proceedings, the lawyer claimed that both DMC (District Municipal Corporation) and KMC (Karachi Metropolitan Corporation) have been actively involved in providing parking facilities.

However, the court raised concerns regarding the permission and regulation of double parking within the city, prompting questions about how such practices could be allowed by KMC and DMC.

Expressing over the condition of a parking plaza, the court questioned the advocate of the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) regarding the purpose of parking plaza. However, the KMC lawyer replied that the parking plaza falls under the jurisdiction of the Karachi Development Authority (KDA).

The court highlighted that significant funds had been invested in constructing the parking plaza and questioned why it was not being used properly.

The issue of motorcycle parking fees was also brought up during the proceedings. The petitioner pointed out that the fee had been fixed at Rs10, but the parking mafia is  charging Rs30 for motorcycle parking.

The court requested the Sindh government’s lawyer to provide specific locations where illegal parking was taking place, indicating a willingness to take action on the matter. The hearing was adjourned until September 26 to allow for further examination of the issue.

Trump raised $7.1 million since he was booked at Atlanta jail

Trump raised $7.1 million since he was booked at Atlanta jail

Former President Donald Trump has raised nearly $20 million in the past three weeks, a period that roughly coincides with his indictment in federal and state cases connected to his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him, Trump’s campaign spokesman said on Saturday.

Since appearing Thursday to have his mug shot taken in a racketeering and fraud case in Atlanta, Georgia, the former president brought in $7.1 million, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

On Friday alone, Trump brought in $4.18 million, making it the highest-grossing day of his campaign so far, Cheung said.

His mug shot, posted by a Georgia courthouse on Thursday evening, has been turned into T-shirts, shot glasses, mugs, posters and even bobblehead dolls by friends and foes alike.

The shot of Trump with a red tie, glistening hair, and an icy scowl was taken as the Republican presidential front-runner was arrested on more than a dozen felony charges, part of a criminal case stemming from his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

Trump, who was elected president in 2016 but defeated by Democrat Joe Biden in 2020, is again seeking the Republican Party’s nomination for president.

Trump is currently facing four indictments, including two related to his false claims that the election was stolen and the Jan. 6, 2021 attack by his followers on the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

He has denied all charges.

On Aug. 15, Trump was indicted by a Georgia grand jury after an investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis into his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden in the state.

On Aug. 3, he pleaded not guilty to charges brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith in federal court in Washington that he conspired to defraud the United States by preventing Congress from certifying Biden’s 2020 election victory over him and to deprive voters of their right to a fair election.

He has also pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawfully keeping classified documents after leaving office, and of falsifying business records in a case in New York related to the payment of so-called hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election.

Russia hopes to raise fish, seafood exports to China after Japan ban

Russia seafood exports, China, Japan ban

MOSCOW/TOKYO: Russia hopes to increase its marine product exports to China in the wake of China’s ban on Japanese seafood imports after the release of treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea.

Russia is one of the biggest marine product suppliers to China, with 894 Russian companies allowed to export seafood, Rosselkhoznadzor, the Russian food safety watchdog, said in July.

In a statement late on Friday, Rosselkhoznadzor said it was seeking to increase the number of exporters.

“The Chinese market in general is promising for Russian fish products. We hope to increase the number of certified Russian companies and ships, the volume of products and its range,” the Rosselkhoznadzor statement said.

To aid that effort, Rosselkhoznadzor plans to continue dialogue with China on seafood safety issues and finish negotiations with China on regulations for Russian marine products supply to the country, the statement said.

China has already banned some food imports from Japan but Thursday’s total ban was prompted by concerns about the “risk of radioactive contamination” after it started releasing the treated water.

China was the destination for over a half of Russian aquatic products exports between January and August, the statement said without providing figures, dominated by pollock, herring, flounder, sardine, cod and crab.

‘Shahenshah’ director shares interesting trivia about Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic costume

shahenshah amitabh bachchan

Filmmaker Tinnu Anand of Amitabh Bachchan-led ‘Shahenshah’ revealed how the veteran actor’s costume ended up with Jeetendra.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

In a recent outing on a radio show, veteran actor-filmmaker, who is best known for directing Amitabh Bachchan’s vigilante, action film ‘Shahenshah’, revealed that he initially designed a different costume himself for his title, which was given to eminent actor Jeetendra by the designer, for his film ‘Aag Aur Shola’, co-starring late actor Sridevi.

“I designed the costume personally. With the help of Amitabh’s designer, we came up with a black leather outfit: black pants, black shoes, and black boots. I even added a rope around his shoulder, though that idea was later dropped,” Anand shared with the host.

He continued to reveal, “Then, what Akbar [Amitabh’s designer] did was, he cheated on me. He gave that costume to Jeetendra. If you see his film [Aag Aur Shola], he’s wearing the same costume, just with the rope.”

“I was angry, disappointed and hurt.”

When Anand came to know about it, he explained the situation to Bachchan and told him that he would never work with that designer again, and went to another designer, Kishore Bajaj instead.

Speaking about the iconic steel arm, Anand divulged that it weighed at least 14 kg. “We sat down, we went through hundreds of magazines, going through clothes and finally, we landed up on an ad by a French company who designed fencing clothes, sword fencing. And there was this ad of this arm, starting from the shoulder to the wrists, and that was fascinating. So I said, ‘Do you think you can design this?’ He said, ‘It will take a lot of time, effort, and a lot of money.’ I said, ‘Don’t worry about that. Just give me a design’,” he detailed.

“So Kishore brought in the bag with the costume, which was very, very heavy. Amitabh said, ‘This is what I’m going to wear during my fights?’ I said, ‘Let’s see you wear it.’ So we left the room and we came back after about 10 minutes,” the director recalled Bachchan’s reaction. “There was a wall-to-wall mirror and he was standing there. He was very, very impressed. He said, ‘Okay, done. This is final’.”

One of the most iconic films of his career, ‘Shahenshah’ starring Bachchan with Meenakshi Sheshadri, came out in 1988, and its dialogues, specifically “Rishte Mein To Hum Tumhare Baap Hote Hain, Naam Hai Shahenshah,” is remembered till date.

At least 21 civilians killed in central Mali attack

At least 21 civilians killed in central Mali attack

Gunmen killed at least 21 civilians in an attack on a village in central Mali’s insurgency-hit Mopti region on Friday, two local sources said on Saturday.

The unidentified assailants struck in the afternoon, targeting the village of Yarou near the town of Bandiagara, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“It was real carnage, armed men burst into the village and fired on people. The toll is heavy between 20 and 30 killed and wounded,” one of the sources said by phone.

The second source said the reported death toll stood at 21 and included women, while 11 others were wounded.

Reuters was not able to independently verify their accounts. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The West African nation is battling a violent insurgency with links to al Qaeda and Islamic State that took root in its arid north following a Tuareg separatist rebellion in 2012.

Militants have since spread to other countries in the Sahel region south of the Sahara, seizing territory, killing thousands and uprooting millions of people in the process.

britney spears sam asghari divorce

American pop superstar Britney Spears finally spoke about her feelings, a day after her former husband Sam Asghari filed for divorce.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

A day after Iranian-born actor-model Sam Asghari, 29, announced to have filed for divorce from Britney Spears, 41, in Los Angeles Superior Court citing ‘irreconcilable differences’, the popstar spoke out about the split.

On Saturday morning, Spears, who married Asghari in June 2022 after dating for nearly six years, wrote in a statement shared on social site Instagram, “As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together…”

She continued, “6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but … I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business !!! But, I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly !!! In some sort of telepathic way I have been receiving so many messages that melt my heart from friends and I thank you!!!”britney spears sam asghari divorce The ‘Baby One More Time’ singer noted that her life’s reality is far from her almost ‘perfect’ Instagram feed, as she had been trying to ‘play strong’ for quite some time now.

“I would love to show my emotions and tears on how I really feel but some reason I’ve always had to hide my weaknesses !!! If I wasn’t my dad’s strong soldier, I would be sent away to places to get fixed by doctors !!! But that’s when I needed family the most !!! You’re supposed to be loved unconditionally … not under conditions !!!! So I will be as strong as I can and do my best !!! And I’m actually doing pretty damn good,” she added before signing off.

It is pertinent to mention that the marriage to Asghari last year, after being released from legal conservatorship, was third for Spears.

Previously, she married Jason Alexander, a childhood friend, in a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas in 2004 but the marriage was annulled shortly after. Nine months later, she married dancer Kevin Federline, with whom she had two children. That marriage ended in divorce in 2007.

US approves sending F-16s to Ukraine

F-16 Ukraine

The United States has approved sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine from Denmark and the Netherlands to defend against “Russian invaders” as soon as pilot training is completed, a U.S. official said on Thursday.

Ukraine has actively sought the U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets to help it counter Russian air superiority.

Washington gave Denmark and the Netherlands official assurances that the United States will expedite approval of transfer requests for F-16s to go to Ukraine when the pilots are trained, the official said.

“We welcome Washington’s decision to pave the way for sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine,” Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra said on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Now, we will further discuss the subject with our European partners.”

Denmark also said providing Ukraine with the jets would now be discussed.

“The government has said several times that a donation is a natural next step after training. We are discussing it with close allies, and I expect we will soon be able to be more concrete about that,” Danish defence minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen told news agency Ritzau on Friday.

A coalition of 11 countries was due to start training Ukrainian pilots to fly the F-16 fighter jets this month in Denmark. Denmark’s acting Defense Minister Troels Poulsen said in July that the country hoped to see “results” from the training in early 2024.

NATO members Denmark and the Netherlands have been leading international efforts to train pilots as well as support staff, maintain aircraft and ultimately enable Ukraine to obtain F-16s for use in its war with Russia.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in May said the Netherlands was seriously considering providing Ukraine with F-16’s, as it is currently phasing out the fighter jets from its own armed forces.

According to figures from the Dutch defence ministry the Netherlands currently has 24 operational F-16’s which will be phased out by mid-2024. Another 18 of the jets are currently available for sale, of which 12 have been provisionally sold.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent letters to his Danish and Dutch counterparts assuring them that the requests would be approved, the U.S. official said.

“I am writing to express the United States’ full support for both the transfer of F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and for the training of Ukrainian pilots by qualified F-16 instructors,” Blinken said in a letter to the two officials, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.

Blinken said, “It remains critical that Ukraine is able to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression and violation of its sovereignty.”

He said the approval of the requests would allow Ukraine to take “full advantage of its new capabilities as soon as the first set of pilots complete their training.”

U.S. President Joe Biden endorsed training programs for Ukrainian pilots on F-16s in May. In addition to training in Denmark, a training center was to be set up in Romania.

Kyiv will not be able to operate U.S.-built F-16 fighter jets this coming autumn and winter, Ukraine air force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat told Ukrainian television late on Wednesday.

U.S. officials have privately said that F-16 jets would have been of little help to Ukraine in its current counteroffensive and will not be a game changer when they eventually arrive given Russian air defense systems and contested skies over Ukraine.

The F-16 is made by Lockheed Martin.

Japanese turn to wearable tech to beat the heat

Japanese turn to wearable tech to beat the heat

Selling jackets with built-in fans, neck coolers and T-shirts that feel cold, Japanese firms are tapping into a growing market for products to help people handle the summer heat.

Japan — like other countries — is seeing ever-hotter summers. This July was the warmest in 100 years, with at least 53 people dying of heatstroke and almost 50,000 needing emergency medical attention.

Workman, which makes clothes for construction workers, launched a version of their fan-fitted jackets adapted for the high street in 2020 as demand grew.

The mechanism is simple — two electric, palm-sized fans powered by a rechargeable battery are fitted into the back of the jacket.

They draw in air to then deliver a breeze — at variable speeds — onto the wearer’s body.

The jackets retail for 12,000 to 24,000 yen ($82-164).

“As the weather gets hotter, people who have never worn fan-equipped clothing before want to find ways to cool down… so more people are interested in buying it,” Workman spokesman Yuya Suzuki told AFP.

“Just like you feel cool when you are at home with a fan, you feel cool just by wearing (the jacket) because the wind is blowing through your body all the time,” he said.

Ageing population at risk –

Japanese summers are known to be hot and humid, but this July Tokyo really sweated.

The average temperature was 28.7 Celsius (83.7 Fahrenheit), the highest on record since 1875.

Heatstroke is particularly deadly in Japan, which has the second-oldest population in the world after Monaco.

More than 80 percent of heat-related deaths in the past five years have been among senior citizens.

“Some people die from heatstroke,” said Nozomi Takai of MI Creations, a company selling neck-cooling tubes mainly to factory and warehouse workers.

“Individuals as well as companies are putting more and more effort into measures against it every year,” Takai said.

The gel inside his firm’s brightly coloured tubes — priced at 2,500 yen — is cool enough to use after 20 minutes in the fridge.

Wearing it on the neck will “considerably cool the whole body” for about an hour, she said.

Takai’s company joined an expo this year on “measures against extreme heat” in Tokyo to showcase new products that help users stay cool in the scorching heat.

At another booth, Tokyo-based company Liberta had a series of clothing including T-shirts and arm sleeves using prints that make users feel cool — especially when they sweat.

The prints use materials such as xylitol that feel cool when reacting with water and sweat, they said.

Chikuma, an Osaka-based company, has even created office jackets and dresses equipped with electric fans.

“We developed them with the idea that it could be proposed in places where casual wear is not allowed,” Yosuke Yamanaka of Chikuma said.

Regular fan-fitted clothes can make the wearer look puffy, as they need to be zipped up, and cuffs are tight.

But jackets developed jointly by Chikuma, power tool maker Makita and textile giant Teijin do not need to be buttoned up, thanks to a special structure that sandwiches the fans in two layers and keeps the cool air in, Yamanaka said.

Men adopting parasols

Parasols, which are commonly associated in Japan with skin-tone-conscious women protecting against a summer tan, are now proving more popular with men too.

Komiyama Shoten, a small, luxury umbrella maker in Tokyo, began making parasols for men around 2019 after the environment ministry encouraged people to use them.

Before, many male customers thought parasols “were for women and they were embarrassed”, the owner Hiroyuki Komiya said.

“Once you use it, you can’t let go,” he added.

On the busy streets of popular tourist destination Asakusa, Kiyoshi Miya, 42, said he decided to “use his umbrella as a parasol”.

“It’s like I’m always in the shade and the wind feels cool,” he said.

Another visitor, Shoma Kawashima, wore a wearable fan around his neck to stay cool under the blazing sun.

“It’s so hot I want to be naked,” the 21-year-old said.

Gadgets are helpful, but “not a solution” to rising temperatures, he added.
