The US currency value in the open market increases 50 paisa and it is trading at Rs 282, forex dealers shared.

The rupee opened the week in the negative.

The gap between interbank and open market exchange rates has remained within the limits allowed by the IMF. The US dollar has shed its value by over 50 rupees since 4 September after a crackdown on the illegal currency business and foreign currency smuggling to abroad.

95 arrested in Myanmar scam operation raids

Myanmar, scam operation raids, 95 arrested

YANGON, Myanmar: Myanmar police arrested 95 people during raids this week on an online scam operation in the commercial hub of Yangon, authorities said.

The country has been in chaos since a military coup in February 2021, with criminal syndicates taking advantage of the lawlessness to run scam centres, particularly in border regions.

Authorities arrested a total of 95 people at three addresses in Yangon on Thursday — most of them Burmese, though some were from unspecified foreign countries.

Police seized a BMW car, laptops, phones, desktop computers and other equipment in the raids, according to a Myanmar junta statement released late Friday.

“On the computers was data from people outside the country, used for scamming money online,” the statement said.

Officers also raided the home of the suspected ringleader of the operation, but he remains at large, it added.

The raids mark the first time the Myanmar junta has announced mass arrests for scams in Yangon.

Previous arrests had centred on the northern border with China.

Myanmar is under pressure from key ally Beijing to root out the scam centres, which often target Chinese citizens.

Criminal gangs are said to have lured, kidnapped or coerced thousands of Chinese nationals and locals into forced labour in online scam operations based in Southeast Asia.

The scammers typically groom their victims for weeks before convincing them to hand over money for fake investments and other ruses, analysts say.

People trafficking connected to casinos and scam operations run by organised crime “has mushroomed across Southeast Asia, particularly in the Mekong”, and profits are at unprecedented levels, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

The scam industry is earning criminal groups the equivalent of billions of dollars, with profits rivalling the GDP of some countries in the region, the agency said in a report in September.

Victims have reported travelling to Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos on false promises of romance or high-paying jobs only to be detained and forced to scam people.

Thailand’s foreign ministry said 219 Thai nationals had been lured into Myanmar scam and people trafficking networks in northern Shan state.

So far authorities had rescued 153 Thais, spokeswoman Kanchana Patarachoke said Friday.

Israel ‘ground forces’ conduct night raid in Gaza: army

Israel 'ground forces' conduct night raid in Gaza: army

The Israeli army said Friday its ground forces backed by fighter jets and drones carried out a “targeted raid” in Gaza over the past day, as it prepares for a land invasion.

“During the last day, IDF ground forces, accompanied by IDF fighter jets and UAVs, conducted an additional targeted raid in the central Gaza Strip,” an army statement said.

“The IDF identified and struck numerous terror targets, including anti-tank missile launch sites, military command and control centres, as well as Hamas members,” it said, saying troops “exited the area at the end of the activity”.

Black-and-white footage released by the military showed a column of armoured vehicles as a thick cloud of dust billowed into the sky after the strikes.

The army conducted a similar ground operation using tanks and infantry the previous night in the northern part of the Palestinian territory.

The latest incursions came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated earlier this week that Israel was “preparing for a ground offensive”.

On October 7, throngs of Hamas gunmen poured from Gaza into Israel, killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping 224 more, according to Israeli officials.

At least 7,028 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, including 2,913 children in Israeli air strikes, according to figures released by the palestinian health ministry.

The fatalities in Gaza are the highest there since Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Palestinian territory in 2005.

AI-aided final Beatles song to be released

beatles, ai-aided last song, now and then

Fans of the Beatles might just twist and shout in joy.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

A new Beatles song will be released next week, featuring the voice of late member John Lennon and developed using artificial intelligence, record company Universal Music Group said on Thursday.

Called ‘Now and Then’, the song – billed as the last Beatles song – also features parts recorded by surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr as well as the late George Harrison.

“There it was, John’s voice, crystal clear,” McCartney said in a statement. “It’s quite emotional. And we all play on it, it’s a genuine Beatles recording.

“In 2023 to still be working on Beatles music, and about to release a new song the public haven’t heard, I think it’s an exciting thing.”

‘Now and Then’ dates back to the late 1970s when Lennon recorded a home demo in New York City, where he was murdered in 1980. The Beatles broke up in 1970. Harrison died of cancer in 2001.

Years after his death, Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono handed a set of recordings including ‘Now and Then’ to the other Beatles, who added their own parts to it. But technological limitations meant Lennon’s vocals and piano could not be separated to produce the clear mix required to finish the song.

The idea to revive the tune followed Peter Jackson’s 2021 documentary series ‘The Beatles: Get Back’, which had managed to isolate instruments and vocals using AI.

The same technology was applied to ‘Now and Then’, which was then completed by McCartney and Starr, Universal said. It will release worldwide at 1400 GMT on November 2.

“It was the closest we’ll ever come to having him back in the room, so it was very emotional for all of us,” Starr said, referring to Lennon. “It was like John was there, you know. It’s far out.”

Israel bombs Gaza, prepares ground invasion amid Russia warning

Israel bombs Gaza, prepares ground invasion amid Russia warning

Israel bombarded the Gaza Strip as it prepared for a ground invasion it says is aimed at annihilating Hamas as Russia warned the conflict could spread beyond the Middle East.

In besieged Gaza humanitarian supplies were critically low, as world powers failed to agree on a lull to the fighting to deliver aid, and residents buried the dead in mass graves as the civilain toll mounted.

U.S. President Joe Biden, in remarks looking beyond the war, said on Wednesday that the future should include Israeli and Palestinian states side by side.

“Israelis and Palestinians equally deserve to live side by side in safety, dignity and in peace,” Biden said at a joint press conference in Washington with visiting Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the conflict could spread beyond the Middle East and said it was wrong that innocent women, children and old people in Gaza were being punished for other people’s crimes.

“Our task today, our main task, is to stop the bloodshed and violence,” said Putin in a meeting with Russian religious leaders of different faiths, according to a Kremlin transcript.

“Otherwise, further escalation of the crisis is fraught with grave and extremely dangerous and destructive consequences. And not only for the Middle East region. It could spill over far beyond the borders of the Middle East.”

Reflecting concerns the Gaza war may spread, the Wall Street Journal reported that Israel had agreed to delay invading Gaza until U.S. air defence systems can be placed in the region, as early as this week, to protect American forces.

Asked about the report, U.S. officials told Reuters that Washington has raised its concerns with Israel that Iran and Iranian-backed Islamist groups could escalate the conflict by attacking U.S. troops in the Middle East. An Israeli incursion into Gaza could be a trigger for Iranian proxies, they said.

Gaza’s war has already sparked conflict beyond the Palestinian territories. Israeli warplanes struck Syrian army infrastructure on Wednesday in response to rockets fired from Syria, an ally of Iran. Israel has also targeted Syria’s Aleppo airport and Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran, Israel’s arch-enemy, has sought regional ascendancy for decades and backs armed groups in Syria, Lebanon and elsewhere as well as Hamas. It has warned Israel to stop its onslaught on Gaza.

At the United Nations, Russia and China vetoed a U.S.-drafted Security Council resolution calling for pauses in hostilities to allow food, water and medicine to be delivered to Palestinian civilians. The United Arab Emirates also voted no, while 10 members voted in favour and two abstained.

Russia made a rival proposal that advocated a wider ceasefire, but failed to win the minimum number of votes. Israel has resisted both, arguing that Hamas would only take advantage and create new threats to Gaza civilians.

As the death toll mounts in Gaza, Palestinians are burying the unidentified dead in mass graves, with a number instead of a name, residents say. Some families are using bracelets in the hope of finding their loved ones should they be killed.

Israeli retaliatory strikes have killed over 6,500 people, the health ministry in the Hamas-run strip said on Wednesday. Reuters has been unable to independently verify the casualty figures of either side.

Biden said on Wednesday he had “no confidence in the number that the Palestinians are using” for the death toll, but he did not say why he was skeptical.

In the U.S., the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said it was “deeply disturbed” by Biden’s comments on the Gaza figures, and called on the president to apologise.

INVASION PREPARATIONS

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised statement that Israel was “preparing for a ground invasion. I will not elaborate on when, how or how many.”

Israeli tanks and troops are massed on the border with Gaza awaiting orders. Israel has called up 360,000 reservists.

International pressure is growing to delay any invasion of Gaza, not least because of hostages. More than half the estimated 220 hostages held by Hamas have foreign passports from 25 different countries, the Israeli government said. Many were believed to have had dual Israeli nationality.

KARACHI: Several flights of Pakistan International Airline (PIA) have been suspended on Sunday over limited fuel supply, ARY News reported.

According to the official spokesperson, 17 international and domestic flights of the national airline which were scheduled on October 22 have been suspended due to limited fuel supply from PSO.

Two PIA flights from Karachi to Islamabad – PK 301 and PK 369 – were cancelled.

Similarly, the national airline’s flights from Karachi to Gwadar, Faisalabad, and Bahawalpur were also unable to take off.

Further, two-way flights from Islamabad to Jeddah were cancelled as well.

PIA agreed with PSO for a daily payment to continue fuel supply for essential routes earlier this month after the state-owned oil company suspended the supply over piling dues.

Pakistan State Oil excused PIA from supplying fuel amid the non-transfer of daily payment due on Sunday. On Saturday, PIA transferred Rs220 million to Pakistan State Oil to continue the daily fuel supply.

Cyclone Tej intensifies into ‘severe cyclonic storm’, 1850 km away from Karachi

'Shaheen' off to Oman but Met office forecasts rough weather near Gwadar

KARACHI: The Cyclonic Storm (TEJ) over the Southwest Arabian Sea has moved further west-northwestward and intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS), Met Office said in a new alert Saturday.

According to the report, the cyclonic storm (TEJ) over the Southwest Arabian Sea strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm (SCS) as it continued to move towards west-northwest.

The Arabian Sea storm has been presently at a distance of 750km in the southeast of Oman and will likely to get further intensity by this evening, PMD Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz said.

The system was earlier located at a distance of about 1850km southwest of Karachi and 1670km south of Gwadar.

None of the Pakistan coastal areas is likely to be impacted by the system, PMD has stated.

This would be the second cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea this year. According to a report the cyclone will be called ‘Tej’, as per a formula followed for naming cyclones in the region.

Meteorologists caution that at times, storms may deviate from the predicted route and intensity, as seen in the case of earlier Cyclone Biparjoy, which formed in the Arabian Sea in June and initially moved in a north-northwest direction before changing course to make landfall between Sindh and Gujarat coast in Pakistan and India.

According to reports, most of weather models indicate the storm is heading for the Yemen-Oman coast

However, a model suggests a re-curvature while positioned over the deep central parts of the Arabian Sea, steering the system towards Sindh and the Gujarat coast, a report said.

Hamas releases two American hostages from Gaza

Hamas releases two American hostages from Gaza

Gaza’s Hamas rulers released two Americans on Friday among some 200 hostages they abducted in October 7 attacks in Israel and indicated that more could follow.

Judith Tai Raanan, 59, and her daughter Natalie, 17, were handed over to Israeli forces at the Gaza Strip border on Friday, becoming the first captives whose release by Hamas has been confirmed by both sides since the latest round of Arab-Israeli bloodshed erupted.\

The release was announced by Abu Ubaida, a spokesman of Hamas, the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, and confirmed a short time later in a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Israeli leader said the mother and daughter, from the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, were “on their way to a meeting point at a military base in the center of the country, where their family members are waiting for them.”

No details were given on their condition, but US President Joe Biden said he was “overjoyed” at the news. Biden spoke by phone to the two women after they were freed.

And Hamas said it was working with Qatar and Egypt to free its “civilian” hostages, in a sign that more releases could follow.

The pair were met at the Gaza border by an Israeli envoy and taken to a military base in central Israel “where their families are waiting to meet them”.

Israel says 203 people — Israelis, dual nationals and foreigners — were abducted by Hamas when they launched the deadliest attacks in Israel’s 75-year history. At least 1,400 people were killed, mostly civilians, according to the government.

Israel has responded with a relentless bombing campaign against the Gaza Strip that has left at least 4,137 people dead, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas administration.

Qatar is a major donor of aid to Gaza and two Hamas leaders are based in the Gulf state. A Qatari foreign ministry spokesman said the country had mediated between Hamas and the United States and that the release followed “many days of continuous communication between all the parties involved.

“We will continue our dialogue with both the Israelis and Hamas, and we hope these efforts will lead to the release of all civilian hostages from every nationality, with the ultimate aim of de-escalating the current crisis and restoring peace,” said the spokesman, Majid al-Ansari.

Biden to seek billions in military aid for Israel as invasion of Gaza nears

US President Joe Biden asked Americans to spend billions more dollars to help Israel fight Hamas while Israel’s defence chief told his troops to be ready to go into the Gaza Strip.

In a televised White House speech late on Thursday that also addressed Ukraine’s effort to repel Russia’s invasion, Biden said Hamas sought to “annihilate” Israel’s democracy.

Israel appeared to be getting closer to a full-scale invasion of Gaza, a densely populated enclave ruled by Hamas. The Israeli military has massed troops and equipment near the Gaza border.

Israeli soldiers patrol an area near Israel's border with the Gaza Strip, in southern Israel

Biden said he would ask Congress on Friday to approve extra funding for “critical partner” Israel. A person familiar with the matter earlier said that would total $14 billion.

Some 3,500 people in Gaza have been killed and more than a million have been made homeless, according to Palestinian health officials. Israel has also imposed a siege on Gaza, and civilians say their situation is desperate as they run short of food, water, fuel and medical supplies.

“All the indications are that the worst is coming,” Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi told reporters in Amman.

A view shows a rocket being launched from the Gaza Strip towards central Israel, as seen from Ashkelon in southern Israel

During an eight-hour visit to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Biden sought to broker a deal to get aid into Gaza but had only limited success.

He said Israel and Egypt agreed that 20 trucks with relief supplies could cross into the enclave. Two Egyptian security sources said equipment was sent on Thursday through its border crossing to repair roads on the Gaza side. More than 100 trucks were waiting in Egypt.

The crossing has been out of operation amid Israeli bombardments on the Palestinian side of the border.

The United Nations has called for aid to return to pre-conflict levels of 100 trucks a day. Secretary General Antonio Guterres planned to visit the Rafah border crossing from Egypt to Gaza on Friday.

Meanwhile, an explosion at a Gaza hospital on Wednesday that enraged the Arab world and the anticipated Israeli ground invasion have heightened fears of the conflict spreading.

Gaza’s interior ministry said 21 Palestinians were killed and 71 injured overnight in Israeli air strikes targeting homes in the southern city of Khan Younis, and that rescue workers were searching for victims under the rubble.

The Pentagon on Thursday said a U.S. Navy warship intercepted three cruise missiles and several drones launched by the Houthi movement from Yemen potentially toward Israel.

He continued, “Jaime [Vaca – co-showrunner for the season], Netflix and I thought it was time to end it. PM Kakar strongly denounces Israeli attack on Hospital in Gaza

gaza hospital attack PM Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar condemn

Caretaker Prime Minister (PM) Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has strongly condemned the Israeli attack on Al-Ahly Al-Mamadany Hospital in Gaza.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the premier said targeting a hospital, a sanctuary for those in need, is an indefensible act of inhumanity. He said international humanitarian law gives protection to hospitals and medical personnel.

PM Kakar demanded an end to this indiscriminate targeting and urged the international community to act swiftly to stop the violence and hold those responsible accountable.

During an interaction with the UN Secretary-General in Beijing, the prime minister said the global community should urge Israel to stop killing innocent Palestinians.

Kareena Kapoor breaks silence on ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ failure

laal singh chaddha, box office failure, kareena kapoor khan, aamir khan

Bollywood A-lister Kareena Kapoor Khan finally addressed the Box Office failure of her last theatrical release ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ co-starring Aamir Khan.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

In her new interview with an Indian publication, Kareena Kapoor spoke at length about the debacle of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and its consequences on the bond she shared with the lead actor of the film, Aamir Khan and director.

Kapoor said that given the names attached to the title including Khan and her, who previously gave a fun and light-hearted movie like ‘3 Idiots’, audiences were not ready for a ‘dark’ film like this from them. “Covid had just happened and everything was slowly opening up and people maybe wanted something more energetic and fun. It was slightly emotional,” she told the interviewer.

When asked if she would rather call it an ‘arthouse’ film, Kapoor replied, “I wouldn’t say arthouse. Maybe there were these big names attached to the film like Aamir and me, they wanted something more coming out this time. I think it was slightly dark.”

Speaking further, the ‘Jaane Jaan’ actor touched upon the consequences of this failure on the real-life bond she shares with Khan and said that she felt bad for him, as he had started living in his titular character.

“After the film, I was busy. I gave birth and had another child during Covid-19. There was so much going on at that time. So, I never really met Aamir after the film,” she explained. “I bumped into him at an NMACC event and I saw it in his eyes that he was a bit apologetic.”

It is pertinent to mention here that the sophomore collaboration of the ‘3 Idiots’ duo, also featuring Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ incurred massive losses for the producers, given the huge budget and unexpected collections at the ticket windows upon its release last year.

The romance drama, helmed by director Advait Chandan, was an official adaptation of the 90s Hollywood hit ‘Forrest Gump’ featuring Tom Hanks.

China’s economic growth slowed in third-quarter but beat forecasts

China, economic growth slowed, third quarter

BEIJING: China’s economy grew more than expected in the third quarter, data showed Wednesday, but the reading was still below target and officials continue to face calls for more stimulus while struggling to contain an unprecedented property crisis.

The 4.9 percent expansion in July-September was helped by forecast-beating retail sales figures and follows a series of broadly positive readings that point to a period of stability following months of weakness despite the lifting of strict zero-Covid measures.

But authorities are still on edge over turmoil in the real-estate sector, which has long accounted for a quarter of the country’s gross domestic product, supports thousands of companies and is a major source of employment.

The industry enjoyed dazzling growth for decades, but the recent woes of key developers including Evergrande and Country Garden are now fuelling buyer mistrust while homes lie unfinished and prices plummet.

Country Garden, one of China’s biggest property firms and long believed to be financially sound, failed last month to repay interest on a loan totalling $15.4 million.

The group has been granted a 30-day grace period which ends on Wednesday, and risks default if it does not honour the repayment.

The country faced a “grave and complex international environment and challenging tasks in promoting reform, development and stability at home” in the first three quarters of 2023, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday.

Authorities have stepped up incentives for property purchases in recent months to reinvigorate the sector, but buyers remain cautious.

Households are watching their spending amid sluggish growth, which has hurt consumption this year, though a week-long national holiday in October helped boost spending on tourism and other services.

Retail sales, the main indicator of household consumption, rose a better-than-expected 5.5 percent on-year in September.

But the government continues to face calls for measures to rekindle the economy.

While leaders have unveiled a series of targeted stimulus for various sectors — particularly property — pressure is building on them to announce wider-ranging support.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday called for China to implement a “comprehensive strategy to address problems in the real estate sector”.

“China’s weaker near-term growth outlook will weigh on regional growth,” it said, adding that the country’s debt-burdened property sector will be a drag on demand across the region.

Bloomberg News reported last week that Beijing was looking at issuing almost $140 billion in sovereign debt to boost the beleaguered economy, with cash would be spent on various projects.

However, observers say a blockbuster spending splurge similar to that unveiled in 2008 during the financial crisis was unlikely.

China is aiming for “around five percent” growth this year — from a low base last year when the domestic economy was paralysed by strict Covid restrictions.

Zhang Zhiwei, of Pinpoint Asset Management, said in a note he believed “the improvement in third-quarter economic data makes it less likely for the government to launch stimulus in the fourth quarter, as the growth target of five percent is set to be achieved”.

Last year, the economy grew three percent, far from the official target of 5.5 percent, and one of the slowest rates in four decades.
