Shakira abruptly cancels concert day before scheduled performance

Shakira abruptly cancels concert day before scheduled performance

One day before the kickoff concert for World Pride 2025 in the nation’s capital, headlining performer Shakira has abruptly cancelled due to equipment difficulties.

“We are deeply disappointed that unforeseen circumstances have forced the cancellation” of the concert, the Capital Pride Alliance, the main World Pride organiser, said in a Friday statement. “Updates about the relocated Opening Ceremony program will be released as soon as they are finalised!”

Notably, the multiplatinum singer had been scheduled to headline the opening celebrations on Saturday night at Nationals Park. The reasons are apparently an extension of equipment issues related to her Thursday night concert in Boston’s Fenway Park, which was also cancelled hours before it was set to begin.

A Friday night concert at Fenway for country star Jason Aldean was also cancelled.

“Due to complications with the previous show in Boston, Shakira’s full tour production cannot be transported to Washington, D.C. in time for her scheduled performance at Nationals Park,” the Capital Pride Alliance statement said. “Despite every effort to make it happen, it is not possible to move forward as planned.”

The Alliance noted that the full slate of citywide events was still on for opening weekend, and said the kickoff ceremony would be relocated and reorganised.

Second woman testifies against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in sex-trafficking trial

Second woman testifies against Sean 'Diddy' Combs in sex-trafficking trial

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was accused of rape by a second woman on Thursday as the hip-hop mogul stands trial for sex trafficking and racketeering, charges that could lead to life in prison if he is convicted.

To Read Lifestyle Stories in Urdu – Click Here

A former personal assistant to Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, testifying under the pseudonym Mia, testified in Manhattan federal court that the Bad Boy Records founder raped her at least twice.

“I was just frozen. I didn’t do anything. I just let it happen,” Mia said, fighting back tears and staring into her lap as she described an incident in which Combs allegedly assaulted her sexually.

Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to five counts, including racketeering and sex trafficking.

Mia told jurors Combs climbed on top of her while she was sleeping and raped her while she lay frozen with fear. Combs’ lawyers have acknowledged he was at times abusive in domestic relationships but said any sex was consensual.

During the testimony, Combs occasionally passed notes to his lawyers but otherwise showed little outward reaction.

Testimony before a panel of 12 jurors and six alternates in Manhattan federal court is in its third week. Prosecutors say Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records, coerced women over two decades to take part in days-long, drug-fueled sexual performances with male sex workers known as ‘Freak Offs’.

In emotional testimony during the first week of trial, Combs’ ex-girlfriend Casandra Ventura told jurors Combs physically and emotionally abused her throughout their tumultuous 11-year relationship and raped her shortly after they broke up for good.

Ventura, a rhythm and blues singer known as Cassie, said she participated in the Freak Offs because she feared Combs would release sex tapes of her if she didn’t, but also because she loved him.

Friends and associates of Combs and Ventura have testified about Combs’ alleged abuse, describing Combs as a domineering figure who relied on bodyguards and associates to enable his alleged crimes and keep victims in line.

The trial has drawn intense media coverage due to Combs’ cultural influence and role in taking hip-hop mainstream through legendary artists like the Notorious B.I.G.

Combs was arrested in Manhattan last September and is being held at a federal prison in Brooklyn when not in court.

Dawn Richard, a former member of the pop group Danity Kane, testified last week that she felt threatened when Combs told her to keep quiet about what she saw.

Richard faced a sharp cross-examination by one of Combs’ lawyers, who sought to point to inconsistencies between her testimony and what she said during interviews with prosecutors.

Last week, Scott Mescudi – the rapper known as Kid Cudi – testified that his car was set on fire in 2012, shortly after Combs learned that the former had a romantic relationship with Ventura.

Prosecutors say the alleged arson of Cudi’s car was one of several violent or illegal acts that Combs or his associates undertook to prevent women from leaving his orbit and keep his abuse quiet.

Pakistan deplores PM Modi’s inflammatory monologue

Pakistan-Modi, Indian Prime Minister Modi, Pakistan foreign office, India-Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday regretted ‘another inflammatory monologue’ delivered by Indian Prime Minister Modi, advising Indian government to cleanse its conscience, desist issuing threats and return to the core principles of international order including respect for sovereign rights of others and its treaty obligations, as well as restraint in both language and action.

“It is regrettable, though not entirely unexpected, that the Indian Prime Minister has, once again, set aside the ongoing project of historical revisionism and the internal repression of minorities to deliver yet another inflammatory monologue. His references to weaponizing water, a shared, treaty-bound resource, reflect a troubling departure from international norms and a stark contrast between India’s conduct in the region and its declared global ambitions,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press statement.

It further said that a leadership truly in pursuit of international respect might first look inward, and seek to cleanse its conscience before issuing threats to others.

PM Modi in his remarks at a gathering in Gandhinagar, the other day, criticized provisions of Indus Waters Treaty saying that these were ‘badly negotiated’. “The treaty has merely been put on hold and they (Pakistan) are already sweating profusely,” the Indian media quoted him as saying.

The Foreign Office in the statement said that the Indian government was linked to extraterritorial assassinations and foreign subversion. India is in occupation of foreign people and territories. Its record in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir is defined by systematic repression. It is ironic that such a state now attempts to claim the mantle of victimhood..

“The ideological followers of India’s current government have normalized mob violence, promoted hate campaigns and targeted religious minorities. Such acts may serve domestic optics but cannot withstand international scrutiny. Nor do they inspire confidence in India’s image as a responsible regional power,” the press statement said.

Pakistan urged India to return to the core principles of international order including respect for sovereign rights of others and its treaty obligations, as well as restraint in both language and action. Jingoism might stir applause on the campaign trail, but it undermined long-term peace and stability.

“India’s youth, often the first casualty of chauvinistic nationalism, would do well to reject the politics of fear and instead work toward a future defined by dignity, reason, and regional cooperation.”

Eight killed as Israel bombs Gaza journalist’s home

Israel-Gaza, Gaza journalist, Israel

At least eight people were killed and others wounded when the Israeli army bombed the home of journalist Osama al-Arbid in the as-Saftawi area of northern Gaza this morning.

Al-Arbid reportedly survived the strike, with dramatic video showing him being pulled from the rubble of the house.

Medical sources have told our team that at least 15 people in total have been killed by Israeli attacks since the early hours of this morning across the Strip.

Gaza- News and Updates

On March 18, Israel effectively ended a January ceasefire agreement with Hamas and renewed its military campaign in Gaza. Hamas and allied factions began firing rockets and attacks two days later.

Hamas has said it is willing to free all remaining hostages seized by its gunmen in attacks on communities in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and agree to a permanent ceasefire if Israel pulls out completely from Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel would only be willing to agree to a temporary ceasefire in return for the release of hostages, vowing that war can only end once Hamas is eradicated.

Israel launched an air and ground war in Gaza after Hamas ross-border attack on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people by Israeli tallies with 251 hostages abducted into Gaza.

The conflict has killed nearly 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities, and devastated the coastal strip. Aid groups say signs of severe malnutrition are widespread.

South Korea impose foreign travel ban on ex-PM Han, ex-finance minister

South Korea-Ex Prime Minister , foreign travel ban , ex-PM Han, ex-finance minister Choi

South Korean police have imposed a ban on foreign travel for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and ex-finance minister Choi Sang-mok as part of an investigation into alleged insurrection, a police official said.

Earlier, South Korea’s main opposition party named its former leader Lee Jae-myung as its candidate for June presidential elections following the impeachment of president Yoon Suk Yeol over his martial law declaration.

Lee, who won the nomination with an overwhelming 89.7 percent of the vote, will represent the Democratic Party against a candidate from Yoon’s conservative People Power Party (PPP).

The June 3 snap election was called after Yoon was stripped of his powers for attempting to impose military rule on the country in December, which saw armed soldiers deployed to parliament.

Yoon’s martial law decree lasted only around six hours and was swiftly overturned by lawmakers who defied the order, climbing over the parliament’s fences to vote it down.

“The people have entrusted me with the mission to reclaim power by an overwhelming victory, to bring an end to the old era of insurrection and regression,” Lee told a party convention in Goyang, northwest of the capital Seoul.

“I will repay your trust by building a truly new nation — a genuine Republic of Korea overflowing with hope and passion,” the 60-year-old added.

Lee’s nomination marks a turnaround from 2022, when he lost the presidential election to Yoon by the narrowest margin in the country’s history.

Recent polls show Lee leading far ahead of other contenders, with the latest Gallup survey placing him at 38 percent support, while all other contenders polled in single digits.

Han Dong-hoon, former PPP chief, and Kim Moon-soo, a former labour minister under Yoon, are among the candidates for the party’s nomination.

But Lee has been the subject of multiple investigations, including bribery and campaign law violations, which he has denounced as politically motivated.

A Seoul court acquitted Lee in March in an election law violation case, overturning a lower court ruling, removing a major hurdle that could have barred him from running if upheld.

Lee still faces a slew of other trials, including on corruption charges. But these trials could be suspended should Lee be elected in June, due to presidential immunity, and would resume once his term is complete.

Bella Ramsey discusses ‘difficult’ finale of ‘The Last of Us’ season 2

Bella Ramsey discusses 'difficult' finale of 'The Last of Us' season 2

Hollywood actor Bella Ramsey, aka Ellie of ‘The Last of Us’, discussed the most ‘difficult’ moments of season 2 to shoot and addressed their return in the next season.

To Read Lifestyle Stories in Urdu – Click Here

In a new interview with a foreign publication, Bella Ramsey recalled shooting the emotionally-charged ‘mad’ final scene of the season and shared how they did their prep for it.

“I’m seeing my friend get shot straight in front of me, seeing Tommy get threatened and almost dying, and it’s just so much going on. Yeah, that was a mad scene. We actually did that scene a couple of times to get it just right,” they disclosed. “It was a really tricky balance, because obviously, so much tragic stuff is happening before her eyes, but at the same time, she’s seeing Abby, this person that she’s been waiting for so long.”

“That was a really challenging scene for me, and it took conversations with Craig and Nina [Lopez-Corrado], the director, to figure out what the right balance was of being traumatized and shell shocked versus this goal that Ellie’s had to kill Abby is there right in front of her – but then obviously, the tables have turns and it’s on her,” Ramsey explained. “It’s just a crazy moment.”

Further addressing their return for the next season 3, the ‘Game of Thrones’ star believed that they will ‘most likely’ have a smaller role as Ellie. “I haven’t seen any scripts, but yes, I do expect that. I think that I’m going to be there, but not a whole bunch,” Ramsey hinted.

“I sort of have a rough idea – we’ve had conversations about that – of what it’s going to be, but I can’t tell you,” they teased.

Pakistan, IMF to hold virtual talks on FY 2025–26 budget today

Pakistan-IMF virtual talks, FY 2025–26 budget

ISLAMABAD: Virtual talks are expected today (Monday) between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for fiscal year 2025–26 budget.

The officials likely to discuss circular debt of the gas sector in the talks, sources said. “Pakistan’s officials will present the plan for ending the gas sector’s circular debt in virtual talks,” sources shared.

Gas sector circular debt has been around Rs 2800 billion. A suggestion to reduce the gas circular debt with dividend expected to be presented, sources said.

The IMF has demanded the data of the gas sector companies. The officials will produce the five years’ performance of the gas companies to the lender.

The monetary fund will be informed about the gas companies gas companies’ profit, loss data as well as the cash flow and balance sheet, according to sources.

The government is expected to submit a plan to the IMF about phasing out the circular debt within five years’ span, sources added.

The budget talks between Pakistan and the IMF remained inconclusive last week, primarily due to disagreements over the relief measures proposed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government, sources said.

The IMF raised objections to government proposals, particularly on additional power subsidies to domestic consumers.

It also dismissed the government’s plan to reduce electricity tariffs for industrial users, and demanded timely tariff hikes during the next fiscal year.

IMF emphasized the need to implement a comprehensive plan to eliminate circular debt in FY2026. This includes negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to reduce the debt by Rs348 billion.

During the talks, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) requested revision of its revenue target of Rs14.307 trillion. The IMF reportedly showed some flexibility, considering a revised target in the range of Rs14.05 trillion to Rs14.1 trillion.

However, the Fund raised concerns over Pakistan’s fiscal discipline, noting that while the FBR is reluctant to increase tax targets, government expenditures continue to rise.

The IMF warned that if spending exceeds the fixed limit, Pakistan will miss its primary balance surplus target – an essential condition of the current IMF loan program.

In Kyiv, Timur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration, said 11 people were injured in drone strikes.

A five-storey apartment building was hit in the Holosiivskyi district just outside the city centre, triggering a fire that damaged the building’s exterior.

A private home and a business centre were damaged in strikes on other districts.

It was the second consecutive night that a mass attack took place.

Local officials also reported a mass drone attack in Konotop, north of Kyiv.

Russia’s Defence Ministry reported that its air defence units had intercepted or destroyed 95 Ukrainian drones over a four-hour period. The Mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, said 12 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted on their way to the capital.

Who is Elias Rodriguez? Israel embassy staff shooting suspect

Elias Rodriguez, Israel embassy, shooting

WASHINGTON: A Chicago-born man, Elias Rodriguez, arrested as the lone suspect in the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy employees in Washington was charged in federal court with two counts of first-degree murder in a killing widely condemned as an act of antisemitism.

Elias Rodriguez, 31, is accused of opening fire on a group of people on Wednesday night as they left an event for young professionals and diplomats hosted by the American Jewish Committee, an advocacy group that fights antisemitism and supports Israel.

SUSPECT’S BACKGROUND

Rodriguez was once involved with a far-left group in Chicago, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, according to a post from the group on X. The group said Rodriguez had a brief association with a PSL branch that ended in 2017 and was unaware of any further contact with him in more than seven years.

“We have nothing to do with this shooting and do not support it,” the organization said.

Rodriguez was also identified in a 2018 local news report as a member of the Chicago branch of a national group called ANSWER, an acronym for Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, which has organized demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians. ANSWER did not immediately respond to email and phone messages.

At the time of his arrest, Rodriguez worked at the healthcare nonprofit American Osteopathic Information Association, the organization confirmed in a statement expressing sympathy for the victims.

He had also worked as an oral history researcher at The HistoryMakers, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving African American stories, according to a now-deleted biography on the group’s website, and was a content writer for technology firms.

Rodriguez was born and reared in Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in English.

POSSIBLE MANIFESTO?

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino posted on social media that investigators were “aware of certain writings allegedly authored by the suspect” and hoped to soon have updates regarding their authenticity.

Bongino’s statement appeared to refer to a manifesto signed with Rodriguez’s name that was posted to an anonymous X account on Wednesday night shortly before the shooting.

Posted with the title “Escalate For Gaza, Bring The War Home,” it condemned Israel’s killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians since the October 2023 Hamas attacks, and discussed the morality of “armed” action.

“In the wake of an act people look for a text to fix its meaning so here’s an attempt,” the document read. “The atrocities committed by Israelis against Palestine defy description and defy quantification.”

Alleged US killer of Israel embassy staff charged with murder

Elias Rodriguez, killer, Israel embassy staff

Washington: The suspect, Elias Rodriguez, accused of gunning down two Israeli embassy staffers outside a Jewish museum in Washington was charged with murder, as international tensions over anti-Semitism erupted over the attack.

Elias Rodriguez, 31, shouted “Free Palestine” as he was taken away by police after the shooting late Wednesday outside the Capital Jewish Museum, prosecutors said in a court document.

“I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza,” he told the officers.

The Chicago man made an initial court appearance Thursday after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder and murder of foreign officials. If convicted, he could receive the death penalty.

Authorities were investigating the shooting “as an act of terrorism and as a hate crime,” Jeanine Pirro, interim US attorney for the District of Columbia, told reporters.

“I suspect as we go forward… that there will be more charges added,” she said, noting that a preliminary hearing was set for June 18.

The shooting triggered international outrage and finger-pointing as Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Saar blamed European criticism of his country’s stepped-up Gaza offensive, claiming “a direct line connecting anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli incitement to this murder.”

“This incitement is also done by leaders and officials of many countries and international organizations, especially from Europe,” he said.

French foreign ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine called the accusation “completely outrageous and completely unjustified.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cited “the terrible price of anti-Semitism” and decried “wild incitement against the State of Israel.”

Soon after the shooting, President Donald Trump — who spoke with Netanyahu on Thursday — posted on social media that the attack was clearly anti-Semitic.

The killings took place outside the Capital Jewish Museum, located a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the White House, following a social event hosted by the American Jewish Committee for young Jewish professionals and the Washington diplomatic community.

Read More: Two shot dead outside Jewish museum in Washington

Israel identified the victims as Yaron Lischinsky, an Israeli citizen, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, a US employee of the embassy, and said they were a couple planning to marry.

– ‘Mass murderers’ –

The attack came days after the museum was awarded a grant to boost security, as anti-Semitism surges worldwide in the wake of Israel’s devastating invasion of Gaza.

Tensions have risen in the United States and many other countries over the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, with pro-Palestinian activists decrying what they say is the intolerable human cost of the military offensive.

Britain and France — who have stepped up their criticism of Israel’s actions — were among those condemning the shooting, as well as Germany and the United Arab Emirates.

But Netanyahu on Thursday accused France, Britain and Canada of emboldening militants, saying “they want Israel to stand down and accept that Hamas’s army of mass murderers will survive, rebuild and repeat the October 7 massacre.”

– ‘Anti-Semitism, I feel it every day’ –

Police said Rodriguez was seen pacing outside the museum before the shooting around 9:00 pm (0100 GMT Thursday).

According to court documents, Rodriguez approached his victims, who were facing away from him, and fired 21 rounds. He shot multiple times at the couple after they were already on the ground and fired at Milgram as she tried to crawl away.

Witnesses said security personnel at first mistook the gunman for a victim of the shooting and allowed him into the museum, where he was initially comforted by bystanders.

“They sat him down. ‘Are you OK? Were you shot? What happened?’ And he’s like ‘Somebody call the cops’,” Yoni Kalin, who was in the museum, told US media.

Lischinsky was a researcher at the Israeli embassy, while Milgrim worked for its public diplomacy department, according to their LinkedIn profiles.

On Thursday, mourners gathered at the museum in Washington to sing and pray.

“Obviously the war is awful,” mourner Gil Livni told AFP. “(But) anti-Semitism, I feel it every day… people that I thought were my friends showing that they are anti-Semitic. It’s become the norm.”

Hadar Susskind, president and CEO of New Jewish Narrative, described the moment as “unbelievably painful … this cannot be the answer.”

Low-pressure Area forms over Arabian Sea, may turn into cyclone

low-pressure Area, Arabian Sea, cyclone

KARACHI: A low-pressure area (LPA) has formed over East-Central Arabian Sea about 1075 km southeast of Karachi, Pakistan Meteorological Department informed in an advisory on Thursday.

The low-pressure area has been located at latitude 16.4 N, longitude 71.9 E at about 1075 km distance from Karachi.

Due to favorable environmental conditions, the system is likely to further intensify into a Depression during next 36 hours and expected to move initially towards north.

Currently, there is no threat to any coastal area of the country. PMD’s cyclone warning center, Karachi is monitoring the system, according to an advisory.

A low-pressure area developed in the Arabian Sea energized by the warmer water temperatures. Weather experts say it could cause very hot weather in Karachi as the sea breeze is expected to pause.

The system is currently hovering near India’s western coast and could strengthen into a deep depression or even a cyclone by May 24 or 25 if conditions remain favourable.

If the system turns into a cyclone, it will be named Shakti — a name proposed by Sri Lanka, meaning ‘power’.

Pakistan draws UNSC’s attention to India’s ‘aggressive’ naval buildup

Pakistan, UNSC, Indian naval buildup, Pahalgam

Pakistan brought into sharp focus of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) India’s “aggressive naval expansion and efforts seeking to assert dominance over critical waterways”, as the 15-member body discussed “Strengthening Maritime Security.”

“We categorically reject any attempt in our region to dominate maritime spaces, undermine established legal frameworks, or marginalize the legitimate interests of other coastal states under any guise or pretext,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, permanent representative of Pakistan, said in the debate convened by Greece, which holds the Council’s presidency for the month of May.

“Our Oceans must be preserved as arenas for cooperation and shared prosperity, not as theatres of strategic rivalry,” the Pakistani envoy said.

“In our own immediate neighborhood, however, we have witnessed a troubling pattern of behaviour by one major country — driven by aspirations of unchecked regional hegemony — marked by aggressive naval expansion, and efforts seeking to assert dominance over critical waterways,” he said in an obvious reference to India.

At the outset, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council that All of humanity depends on the world oceans and seas — from the oxygen we breathe, to the biodiversity that sustains all life, to the economies, trade and jobs supported by maritime industries.

He said that today debate shines a light on a fundamental fact: Without maritime security, there can be no global security.

In his comments, Ambassador Asim, the Pakistani envoy, said that India’s “destabilizing and dangerous naval build-up is accompanied by coercive diplomacy and the systematic exclusion of neighbouring states from regional maritime security frameworks, including the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA)”.

Such actions, he said, undermine the maritime balance and restrict the space for inclusive cooperation.

“This same country has also displayed a concerning propensity to usurp and weaponize shared natural resources — including trans-boundary rivers — in flagrant breach of treaty obligations and the principles of good neighborliness,” Ambassador Asim said.

“These actions reflect a broader agenda of leveraging geography to disrupt and destabilize long-standing cooperative arrangements, particularly to the detriment of the lower riparian state that is Pakistan, and impose unilateral outcomes, in both riverine and maritime spheres.

“As a maritime nation, Pakistan views the Arabian Sea as its ‘fifth neighbour,’ integral to its economic vision and strategic orientation. Pakistan unique geographical positioning offers significant potential to serve as a regional trans-shipment hub enabling trade and connectivity for landlocked Central Asian countries.”

On its part, he said Pakistan has remained a committed and responsible partner in international efforts to strengthen maritime security, pointing out that the Pakistani Navy continues to contribute to Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) Task Forces conducting operations across the Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, and the Red Sea to counter terrorism, smuggling and piracy as well as also launched Regional Maritime Security Patrols (RMSP) to ensure a safe and secure environment in the seas.

“Our dedication to regional cooperation is also reflected in our engagement with multilateral initiatives such as the Djibouti Code of Conduct,” the Pakistani envoy said, adding that at the national level, Pakistan continue to build capacity in port security, blue economy development, maritime domain awareness, and marine conservation.

Pakistan, he said, also recognizes the urgent need to address the growing climate-related risks facing the maritime and coastal systems, noting that rising sea levels, acidification, and coastal erosion pose serious threats to livelihoods, ecosystems, biodiversity, and maritime stability.

Maritime security is inseparable from the broader cause of international peace and stability, Ambassador Asim said, asserting that any attempts to instrumentalize maritime spaces for political or strategic leverage must be collectively rejected.

“Instead,” the Pakistani envoy said, “we must reaffirm our commitment to multilateralism, equity, and cooperation as the foundation for a secure and sustainable maritime future.

Kristen Stewart feels like a ‘proud parent’ with Cannes directorial debut

Kristen Stewart feels like a 'proud parent' with Cannes directorial debut

Kristen Stewart said on Saturday that making her directorial debut with ‘The Chronology of Water’ at the Cannes Film Festival felt like sending a child off to school for the first time.

“I’m so proud of it. It’s like watching your kid go to school,” Kristen Stewart told Reuters the day after her film’s premiere.

“It feels like all of a sudden the things that I’ve wanted to do for just so long happened all at the same time,” said the actor who rose to fame with the ‘Twilight’ series and received an Oscar nomination for her performance as Britain’s Princess Diana in the film ‘Spencer’.

“My head is spinning, but in the best way,” she added.

Her film is adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s 2011 memoir of the same name that chronicles the author’s attempt to escape an abusive household through competitive swimming in the 1980s and eventual path to becoming a respected author.

British actor Imogen Poots, known for ‘Green Room’ and ’28 Weeks Later’, stars as Yuknavitch in what The Rolling Stone lauded as an ‘all-or-nothing type of performance’.

“There’s a line in the book that made me want to make it a movie, which is like, ‘Can you hold life and death in the same sentence?’ And that’s what cinema can do,” said Stewart.

“With this movie, we can just speak to the fact that the things that happen don’t matter as much as how you process those things and define them within your own body,” she added.

Stewart’s film is competing in the second-tier Un Certain Regard section, where actors Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson are also marking their first time as directors.

‘The Chronology of Water’ was met with positive reviews, with Deadline calling it a ‘raw and intricately constructed take on a biopic’ and The Guardian giving it three out of five stars.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs abused ex-girlfriend Cassie; testitfies Pop singer

Sean 'Diddy' Combs abused ex-girlfriend Casandra ventura; testitfies Pop singer

Pop singer Dawn Richard told a jury in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ sex trafficking trial on Friday that she often saw the hip-hop mogul beat his then-girlfriend, Casandra Ventura, who earlier testified that Combs physically and emotionally abused her throughout their 11-year relationship.

To Read Lifestyle Stories in Urdu – Click Here

Dawn Richard recounted an incident at Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ Los Angeles home in 2009 when he beat Casandra Ventura and dragged her upstairs by the hair. Richard then said she heard breaking glass and screaming.

“He came down the stairs screaming, belligerent, asking where his food was and proceeded to hit her over the head and beat her on the ground in front of us,” Richard told the jury in Manhattan federal court during a fifth day of testimony.

Richard said Combs called her and others who witnessed the assault into the studio the next day, gave them flowers and said their careers would be harmed if they reported the incident.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to five felony counts of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. Combs has been held since September in a Brooklyn jail when not in court. If convicted on all counts, he could face a minimum of 15 years in prison and life behind bars.

The 38-year-old Ventura, a rhythm and blues singer known as Cassie, told jurors earlier that Combs coerced and blackmailed her into taking part in days of drug-fueled sex parties he called ‘Freak Offs’ at the heart of the prosecution’s case.

She said she suffered years of physical and emotional abuse during their tumultuous relationship.

Richard is expected to resume her testimony on Monday. The trial, which has drawn intense media coverage because of Combs’ wealth and towering influence in the music industry, could last up to two months.

Richard has a pending civil lawsuit against Combs, accusing him of subjecting her to inhumane working conditions, including groping and assaulting her. The lawsuit says Richard saw Combs brutally beat Ventura on many occasions.

Before Richard’s testimony, jurors saw photos of items found during a search of Combs’ hotel room on the day of his arrest last September. The items include bottles of baby oil, lubricant, bags of cocaine and other drugs, some prescribed to people other than Combs.

Combs placed his hand on his forehead and spoke to his lawyers while jurors were shown bags of pink powder that a law enforcement witness said tested positive for MDMA and ketamine. A prosecutor handed jurors bags of drugs and cash.

Defense Challenges Credibility of Rape Allegation

For much of Friday’s testimony, a lawyer representing Combs sought to undercut Casandra Ventura’s claim that he raped her in 2018, showing jurors text messages indicating Ventura had consensual sex with Combs a month after the alleged rape.

The lawyer, Anna Estevao, showed Ventura texts from September 2018 when she and Combs wrote of potentially meeting up and hugging after having not seen each other in a while.

“You don’t say anything to the effect of, ‘Last time we saw each other you raped me?'” Estevao asked.

“Right,” Ventura responded.

Ventura previously told jurors Combs raped her in her home after they broke up.

“I just remember crying and saying no, but it was very fast,” she said, as her voice trailed off.

During follow-up questioning by a prosecutor on Friday, Ventura said she had no doubt that Combs raped her. She also acknowledged having consensual sex with him a few weeks later.

Combs, previously known as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, founded Bad Boy Records and is credited with helping turn artists like Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars in the 1990s and 2000s.

‘To Do the Right Thing’

Part of the criminal case stems from Ventura’s November 2023 civil lawsuit against Combs. She testified that he agreed after 24 hours to settle for $20 million.

Asked on Wednesday why she decided to testify against Combs, Ventura said she could no longer bear the emotional burden of years of his abuse, and ‘came here to do the right thing’.

Ventura told jurors she would give back the $20 million from her settlement if it meant never having to participate in Freak Offs.

After her testimony, Ventura’s lawyer, Douglas Wigdor, read for reporters a statement from Ventura that said: “For me, the more I heal, the more I can remember, and the more I can remember, the more I will never forget.”

Meanwhile, singer Justin Bieber’s representative issued a statement saying Bieber was not a victim of Combs but supports others who were victims and are seeking justice from the hip-hop mogul, TMZ and People reported on Friday.

Videos of Combs and Bieber spending time together prompted online speculation that Combs may have abused Bieber.

India, Pakistan were ‘very close’ to a nuclear war: Trump

Trump, India, Pakistan, nuclear

WASHINGTON: United States President Donald Trump claimed that Pakistan and India were very close to a nuclear war, calling the ceasefire agreement between the two nuclear-armed nations one of his “bigger successes.”

Speaking to Fox News during his visit to the Middle East, Trump discussed his role in mediating a ceasefire between Pakistan and India, suggesting that his intervention helped prevent what he described as a potential nuclear conflict.

“That was going to be a nuclear war, I think, or close… And now everyone’s happy,” Trump said. “In fact, I told my people, call them up—let’s start trading immediately.”

He elaborated on his conversations with Pakistani leadership, saying, “I had great conversations with Pakistan. We can’t forget them. I talked about trade with Pakistan—they would love to trade. They are brilliant people and make incredible products. We don’t do much trading with them.”

Reiterating the severity of the situation, Trump emphasized, “India and Pakistan were very close to a nuclear war. And now everyone is happy. I’m using trade to settle scores and to make peace.”

Trump described his diplomatic achievement as one that won’t receive the credit it deserves. “A bigger success than I’ll ever be given credit for,” he said. “Those are major nuclear powers. Those are not just little powers and they were angry”.

Highlighting the escalation between the two nations, Trump said, “The next phase was probably, did you see where it was getting? It was tit for tat. It was getting deeper – more missiles, everyone was saying ‘stronger, stronger,’ to a point where the next one’s going to be, you know what? The N word.”

“It’s the N word. That’s a very nasty word, right? In a lot of ways. The N word used in a nuclear sense—that’s the worst thing that can happen. And I think they were very close. The hatred was great,” he added. “And I said, ‘We’re going to talk about trade. We’re going to do a lot of trade.’”

Trump also criticized India’s trade policies, saying, “India… they’re one of the highest tariff nations in the world. They make it almost impossible to do business. Do you know that they’re willing to cut 100% of their tariffs for the United States?”

IMF demands Pakistan to raise Rs430 billion in new taxes

IMF, Pakistan, new taxes

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Pakistan to increase tax revenues by Rs430 billion to set an ambitious Rs14.3 trillion tax collection target for the upcoming 2025–26 federal budget, according to official sources.

This recommendation was made during the second round of virtual negotiations between the IMF and the government, where detailed discussions centered around revenue targets and fiscal policy.

The IMF emphasized the need for urgent action to broaden the tax base, including swift resolution of tax-related court cases and the implementation of stronger enforcement measures.

The Fund proposed a significant increase in tax revenue, suggesting that Pakistan set a tax collection target of Rs 14.3 trillion for the next fiscal year with an additional taxes of Rs 430 billion to be generated through new taxation measures.

IMF also suggested that Rs600 billion can be raised solely through enforcement actions.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb briefed the IMF delegation on the country’s economic performance and the challenges government is facing in achieving the tax collection.

Due to sluggish growth and persistent inflation, government estimates suggest that revenue collection may be limited to Rs 13.275 trillion. However Rs1.03 trillion could be collected through enforcement and policy reforms.

The IMF has also urged the government to increase documentation of high-potential sectors including tobacco, beverages, and real estate, while recommending improvements in real-time data collection and automation within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

The meeting also discussed enhancing FBR’s production data monitoring and improving documentation.

Ukraine’s F-16 fighter jet crashes, pilot ejects safely, air force says

Ukraine's F-16 fighter jet crashes, pilot ejects safely, air force says

Ukraine lost an F-16 fighter jet on Friday morning after an incident on board, though the pilot ejected safely, the Ukrainian air force said in a statement.

“According to preliminary data… an unusual situation arose on board. The pilot moved the aircraft away from the settlement and successfully ejected,” it said on the Telegram messenger.

The air force said the pilot was feeling fine.

It indicated that the crash did not appear to be the result of Russian fire and a commission had been appointed to investigate all circumstances of the incident.

The crash is the second involving an F-16 since Kyiv began receiving the fighter jets from U.S. allies last year as part of a programme approved by the administration of former U.S. President Joe Biden.

In late August 2024, an F-16 crashed and its pilot died while repelling a major Russian air strike.

Ukraine does not disclose the number of aircraft it has received.
