Saudi Arabia dives into Ukraine peace push with Jeddah talks

Saudi Arabia, Ukraine peace, Jeddah talks

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia was set to host talks on the Ukraine war on Saturday in the latest flexing of its diplomatic muscle.

The meeting of national security advisers and other officials in the Red Sea coastal city of Jeddah underscores Riyadh’s “readiness to exert its good offices to contribute to reaching a solution that will result in permanent peace,” the official Saudi Press Agency said Friday.

Invitations were sent to around 30 countries, Russia not among them, according to diplomats familiar with the preparations.

The SPA report said only that “a number of countries” would attend.

It follows Ukraine-organised talks in Copenhagen in June that were designed to be informal and did not yield an official statement.

Instead, diplomats said the sessions were intended to engage a range of countries in debates about a path towards peace, notably members of the BRICS bloc with Russia that have adopted a more neutral stance on the war in contrast to Western powers.

Speaking on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the wide range of countries represented in the Jeddah talks, including developing countries which have been hit hard by the surge in food prices triggered by the war.

“This is very important, because on issues such as food security, the fate of millions of people in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world directly depends on how fast the world moves to implement the peace formula,” he said.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest crude exporter which works closely with Russia on oil policy, has touted its ties to both sides and positioned itself as a possible mediator in the war, now nearly a year and a half old.

Energy crisis produced by the Ukraine war elevated Saudi Arabia’s global importance.

Moving forward Riyadh “wants to be in the company of an India or a Brazil, because only as a club can these middle powers hope to have impact on the world stage,” Hiltermann added.

“Whether they will be able to agree on all things, such as the Ukraine war, is a big question.”

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, failing in its attempt to take Kyiv but seizing swathes of territory that Western-backed Ukrainian troops are fighting to recapture.

Beijing, says it is a neutral party in the conflict but criticised by Western capitals for refusing to condemn Moscow, announced on Friday it would participate in the Jeddah talks.

“China is willing to work with the international community to continue to play a constructive role in promoting a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis,” said foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin.

India has also confirmed its attendance in Jeddah, describing the move as in line “with our longstanding position” that “dialogue and diplomacy is the way forward”. South Africa said it too will take part.

Saudi Arabia has backed UN Security Council resolutions denouncing Russia’s invasion as well as its unilateral annexation of territory in eastern Ukraine.

In sum, Riyadh has adopted a “classic balancing strategy” that could soften Russia’s response to this weekend’s summit, said Umar Karim, an expert on Saudi politics at the University of Birmingham.

PM Shehbaz Sharif calls allies’ meeting to mull over caretaker set-up

PM Shehbaz Sharif calls allies' meeting to mull over caretaker set-up

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has summoned crucial allies meeting today to deliberate on the caretaker setup, a day after he hinted at dissolving the National Assembly on August 9, ARY News reported on Friday citing sources.

The meeting, which will take place via video link, will be attended by heads of allied parties, including PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

PM Shehbaz Sharif will take his coalition partners into confidence on the proposed names for caretaker prime minister during the crucial gathering.

‘NA to dissolve on August 9’

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Wednesday announced that the assemblies will be dissolved on August 9.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hosted the farewell dinner for the member of parliament. The assurance was given by the premier during a dinner he hosted for his coalition partners.

PM Shehbaz said that consultation will be held with the coalition parties and together with the opposition leader the name of the caretaker prime minister will be finalized.

He said that the PDM came into power in a tough time when the country was on the verge of default but despite all the criticism, the government saved Pakistan within 15 months.

PM lambasted the PTI chief saying that the former prime minister had damaged the institutions and the PDM government had to deal with the crisis they have created.

Shehbaz Sharif had said that the upcoming general elections will be held on 2023 census.

The caretaker set-up process

According to constitutional provisions, the PM, as leader of the House, and the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly have to initiate consultations over the caretaker PM. Their failure could refer the matter to a parliamentary committee.

The matters will be forwarded to ECP to pick the caretaker prime minister if the parliamentary committee too fails in selecting a caretaker PM.

‘Barbie’ release marred by controversy in Japan

barbie japan release

The Japan opening of Barbie was dealt additional setbacks after a voice actor spoke out against a controversial grassroots marketing movement for the hit film and the US ambassador caught flack for promoting the film online.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

Barbie, which stars Margot Robbie in the title role, recently grossed $800 million at the global box office, helped in part by a viral Barbenheimer meme that paired the film with a biopic of nuclear bomb scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer that opened at the same time.

Barbie producer Warner Bros initially latched on to fan-produced memes that depicted Robbie’s Barbie with actor Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer alongside images of nuclear blasts, but fans were not amused in Japan, which in the coming days will mark the memorials of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 78 years ago.

A #NoBarbenheimer hashtag trended online, prompting Warner’s Japan division to issue a rare public criticism of its parent company, which then followed with an apology this week.

Mitsuki Takahata, who voices Barbie in the dubbed Japanese version, posted on Instagram on Wednesday that she was dismayed upon learning of the memes marketing campaign and considered dropping out of a promotional event in Tokyo hyping its opening on August 11.

“This incident is really, really disappointing,” she posted.

The media-savvy US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel posted a picture of his meeting with director Greta Gerwig, but the response online was chilly.

“Your post at this time will get on the nerves of many Japanese, and will further solidify their resolve to never go to see that movie,” replied a poster known as tsuredzure on the X platform formerly known as Twitter.

No Japan release date has been announced for ‘Oppenheimer’, which chronicles the creation of the atomic bomb. The film has been criticised for largely ignoring the weapon’s destruction in Japan towards the end of World War Two, obliterating two major cities and accounting for more than 200,000 deaths.

‘Barbenheimer’ continues Box Office domination in second weekend

Fawad Chaudhry submits written apology to election commission

Fawad Chaudhry, written apology, election commission contempt

ISLAMABAD: Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday submitted written apology to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the ECP contempt case, ARY News reported.

The ECP reserved its decision over the contempt case against former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader.

Talking to the media at the election commission, Fawad Chaudhry urged for a charter of democracy before general elections in the country.

“How could the election be possible without addressing the issue of estrangement between chairman PTI and Nawaz Sharif,” he questioned. “If elections held without addressing this estrangement nothing will be solved”, he added. ” Normalization of Pakistan is more needed than the election,” he opined.
