PTI chairman ready to talk to all, say lawyers

Imran Khan ready to talk to all, say lawyers

ATTOCK: Jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former prime minister was ready for talks with everyone but with only elections on the agenda, his lawyers said Saturday.

PTI legal team comprising Intezar Panjotha, Shoaib Shaheen, Naeem Panjotha, Gohar Ali Khan and his personal physician Dr Faisal Sultan met the deposed premier in Attock jail yesterday.

Talking to journalists following the meeting, Shoaib Shaheen said that PTI chief was worried about the people of Pakistan amid ‘deteriorating economic situation’.

Meanwhile, Naeem Haider Panjutha said that Imran Khan was completely fine and healthy in jail, stressing the need for political stability in the country.

Taking to X, Panjutha quoted Khan as saying that he was ready to talk to any political party or institution about holding elections.

“Finally met Khan sab at Attock Jail with other colleagues. Alhamdulillah, he is in great spirit but concern about ongoing uncertainty, inflation, and terrorism,” Barrister Gohar Khan posted on X. “He is willing to talk to all BUT about election.”

Former premier Imran Khan, who is in judicial custody till September 13 in cipher case, has been incarcerated in Attock prison since his arrest on August 05.

It is pertinent to mention here that a special court in Islamabad ordered Attock Jail authorities — where the former premier is incarcerated — to keep the PTI chairman in judicial lockup in cypher case.

Shaheen says partnerships key after Pakistan pacers rattle India

Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan India, pacers rattle India

KANDY, Sri Lanka: Pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi said bowling in partnerships was the key to rattling India’s batting in the blockbuster Asia Cup clash abandoned because of rain.

The left-arm fast bowler took four wickets, including the prize top-order dismissals of India captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as Pakistan gained a psychological edge over their great rivals, who had elected to bat first in Kandy on Saturday.

The two teams could potentially clash twice more in the Asia Cup if both reach the final, ahead of a highly anticipated 50-over World Cup clash in Ahmedabad next month.

Shaheen, who finished with 4-35, and fellow quick Haris Rauf reduced India to 66-4 before a fightback by Ishan Kishan, who made 82, and Hardik Pandya (87) lifted India to 266 all out.

New-ball-partner Naseem Shah did not get his first wicket until the 45th over but then struck twice more to wrap up the India innings in 48.5 overs.

Rain meant Pakistan were unable to bat and the points shared.

It was enough to put Pakistan into the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup and India will join them if they avoid defeat to Nepal at the same ground on Monday.

“Mickey (Arthur) always says ‘fast bowlers win you tournaments’ and we always try to bowl in partnerships,” said Shaheen of the national team director in a video chat on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s social media.

He said the role of Haris Rauf, the third member of a daunting pace attack, was “to instil fear in the opposition batsmen with pace and bouncers, while Naseem and I rely on swing”.

Shaheen set up Rohit, on 11, with two outswingers and brought the next back in to smash the off stump of the Indian captain.

Kohli was the next to go on four as he chopped on a length delivery outside the off stump from Shaheen.

“Virat is the backbone of the Indian team and getting his wicket was crucial,” said Shaheen, who was confident Pakistan could have won had the weather not intervened.

“We had the result in our hands. But overall the team performance in one innings was very good.”

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar praised Shaheen on his opening spell.

“I don’t think Rohit is able to read or understand Shaheen at all,” Akhtar said on his official YouTube channel.

“The visual of Rohit Sharma being beaten like this was not good, he is a far better player than this.”

Pervaiz Elahi’s detention order challenged in IHC

FIA arrest Pervaiz Elahi, money laundering case

ISLAMABAD: Former Punjab chief minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Saturday challenged his arrest under MPO in Islamabad High Court (IHC), ARY News reported.

The PTI leader has challenged his detention under MPO through his counsel Abdul Razzaque. Secretary Interior, IG Police and others have been made respondents in the plea.

He pleaded with the court to strike down his arrest under MPO and order his immediate release.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, who had been re-arrested by the Islamabad police from Lahore yesterday, was shifted to Attock Jail on Saturday.

Soon after he was shifted to Islamabad, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad ordered his detention for a period of 15 days under the Pakistan Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

The order issued by the Islamabad administration stated that law and order situation could be worsened due to Pervaiz Elahi, who is a key office-bearer of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Elahi is among several PTI leaders who have been booked under the MPO amid the crackdown against the party in the aftermath of the May 9 riots.

His arrest came hours after the LHC ordered the National Accountability to release the PTI president and barred authorities from arresting him in any case.

The capital police arrested the PTI president under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order from Zahoor Elahi Road, shortly after he was released on court orders.

The LHC had ordered the additional registrar for security, DIG Operations, and other senior police officials to ensure that Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi returned safely to his home.

It is pertinent to mention here that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Elahi over failing to provide information to the accountability bureau in assets beyond the means case against him, his son Monis Elahi and other family members.

After the moon, India launches rocket to study the sun

After the moon, India launches rocket to study the sun

Following the success of India’s moon landing, the country’s space agency launched a rocket on Saturday to study the sun in its first solar mission.

The rocket left a trail of smoke and fire as scientists clapped, a live broadcast on the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) website showed.

The broadcast was watched by nearly 500,000 viewers, while thousands gathered at a viewing gallery near the launch site to see the lift-off of the probe, which will aim to study solar winds, which can cause disturbance on earth commonly seen as auroras.

Named after the Hindi word for the sun, the Aditya-L1 launch follows India beating Russia late last month to become the first country to land on the south pole of the moon. While Russia had a more powerful rocket, India’s Chandrayaan-3 out-endured the Luna-25 to execute a textbook landing.

The Aditya-L1 spacecraft is designed to travel about 1.5 million km (930,000 miles) over four months to a kind of parking lot in space where objects tend to stay put because of balancing gravitational forces, reducing fuel consumption for the spacecraft.

Those positions are called Lagrange Points, named after Italian-French mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange.

The mission has the capacity to make a “big bang in terms of science,” said Somak Raychaudhury, who was involved in the development of some components of the observatory, adding that energy particles emitted by the sun can hit satellites that control communications on earth.

“There have been episodes when major communications have gone down because a satellite has been hit by a big corona emission. Satellites in low earth orbit are the main focus of global private players, which makes the Aditya L1 mission a very important project,” he said.

Scientists hope to learn more about the effect of solar radiation on the thousands of satellites in orbit, a number growing with the success of ventures like the Starlink communications network of Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

“The low earth orbit has been heavily polluted due to private participation, so understanding how to safeguard satellites there will have special importance in today’s space environment,” said Rama Rao Nidamanuri, head of the department of earth and space sciences at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology.

Longer term, data from the mission could help better understand the sun’s impact on earth’s climate patterns and the origins of solar wind, the stream of particles that flow from the sun through the solar system, ISRO scientists have said.

Pushed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has privatised space launches and is looking to open the sector to foreign investment as it targets a five-fold increase in its share of the global launch market within the next decade.

As space turns into a global business, the country is also banking on the success of ISRO to showcase its prowess in the sector.

Curtis James Jackson aka 50 Cent, 48, took fellow rapper Cardi B’s route and hurled his broken microphone into the crowd in frustration during a recent LA show, allegedly hitting the concert-goer in her head. Videos of the incident started circulating on social media soon after he was done with the gig.

Reportedly, the rapper was upset over the microphones not working and threw them not once but twice into the crowd. First, he launched it with a little force which did not hurt anyone, however, the second one, thrown with more force, hit the US radio host, Bryhana Monegain while other special guests were still performing on the stage.

In the images doing rounds on social media, Monegainm was spotted with an open wound on her forehead and bloody towels around her neck.

As reported by foreign media, Monegain filed a police report with the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) after the incident.

In response from 50 Cent, his attorney, Scott Leemon said, “Let’s be very clear, as I told LAPD this afternoon (August 31), my client Curtis would never intentionally strike anyone with a microphone. Anyone saying something different doesn’t have all the facts and is misinformed.”

SBP refutes reports of MPC meeting for interest rate hike

sbp refutes reports interest rate hike

KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has refuted the reports of holding an emergency meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to hike the policy rate.

Earlier, reports circulated that the SBP was likely to hike interest rates by as much as 300 points to 25.

The central bank in its clarification said reports claiming holding a session of the Monetary Policy Committee are baseless. Furthermore, it would be premature to forecast the future policy rate as only the MPC, which is an independent statutory body, is empowered to decide about the policy rate, the SBP added.
