UNICEF joins hands with Pakistan to protect children from climate risks

Coordinator to Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam on Saturday made a significant commitment on behalf of Pakistani government to join hands with provincial governments to safeguarding its children from the devastating impacts of climate change.

“Recognizing the vulnerability of the youngest and most marginalized populations to climate-induced disasters, we have pledged to prioritise child-centric climate adaptation and resilience measures in its national strategies,” she made these remarks after a crucial MoU signing ceremony between Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination and UNICEF held at Pakistan Pavilion on the sidelines of the COP29 global climate conference.

Top key representatives of the government of Pakistan along with the Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial governments affirmed their commitment to collaboratively protect the rights and interests of children embroiled in the quagmire of the impacts of climate crisis.

Federal Secretary Ministry of Climate Aisha Humera Moriani and UNICEF Deputy Executive Director signed the Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action, a pledge by champion governments to uphold priorities identified by children and youth across the world.

Addressing the event, Romina Khurshid Alam remarked that enhancing access to education, health, and nutrition services in climate-affected areas as well as investing in sustainable infrastructure to protect schools and communities from extreme weather events is top priority of the present government.

She also emphasised that recognising the importance of empowering children as key drivers of climate action is vital to involving them in climate action programmes, fostering a generation of climate-conscious leaders.

Pakistan also emphasized the importance of integrating children’s voices into policy decisions and fostering community-based initiatives to empower young people as active participants in climate action.

She termed the signature a significant step towards safeguarding the lives of 112 million children in Pakistan, who are vulnerable to climate-related disasters, displacement, and trauma.

“We commit to integrate child rights and needs into Pakistan’s climate policies and especially the Nationally Determined Contributions 3.0, which will be the focus of COP30 in Brazil next year,” said Romina Khurshid, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change upon signing the Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action.

Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) are national climate action plans by each country under the Paris Agreement. It contains efforts by each country to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

“We must ensure our children are prepared for the future they are growing into,” said Honourable Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister of Sindh Province. “Our education curriculum must reflect the realities of a world being altered by climate change and preparing our young people for a green economy.”

The Government of Pakistan and UNICEF are deeply concerned about the disproportionate impact of climate change on children. Rising greenhouse gas emissions and short-lived climate pollutants pose an imminent threat to their health, education, and well-being. Regular flooding and intensifying heat waves expose children to higher risks than those faced by children in 1960.

Constructive talks held with Pakistan officials, says IMF

IMF, talks with Pakistan, EFF review

WASHINGTON: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said it held constructive talks with authorities in Pakistan on economic policy and reform efforts to reduce vulnerabilities during an unscheduled staff visit.

The unusual visit from Nov 12 to Nov 15 discussed a $7-billion bailout within six weeks of its approval by the IMF board, but came too early for the first review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), due in the first quarter of 2025.

“We are encouraged by the authorities’ reaffirmed commitment to the economic reforms supported by the 2024 EFF,” Nathan Porter, the chief of the IMF’s Pakistan mission, who led the talks, said in a statement.

The constructive discussions on economic policy and reform efforts to reduce vulnerabilities would help to lay the basis for stronger and sustainable growth, he added.

The mission did not state the weaknesses, but sources in Pakistan’s finance ministry have said some major lapses prompted the IMF to intervene.

Among these were a shortfall of nearly 190 billion rupees ($685 million) in revenue collection during the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

Losses running into billions of dollars in the power and gas sector, the main hole in the economy, were also discussed, the IMF said, adding that structural energy reforms were critical to restore the sector’s viability.

Both sides agreed on the need to continue prudent fiscal and monetary policies, and mobilise revenue from untapped tax bases, the mission added.

Pakistan has struggled for decades with boom-and-bust economic cycles, prompting 23 IMF bailouts for the country since 1958.

Matthew Perry’s home sold to THIS Indian film producer for Rs 720000000

Matthew Perry, Friends actor , Perry's home sold, Indian film producer , Anita Verma-Lallian

The Los Angeles home of late ‘Friends’ star Matthew Perry has found a new owner as Indian-origin film producer and real estate developer Anita Verma-Lallian has purchased the Pacific Palisades property for a whopping $8.55 million (approximately Rs 72.04 crore).

Before moving in, Verma-Lallian and her family performed a traditional Hindu ‘puja’ ceremony to bless the home and honor Perry’s memory.

Sharing a post on Instagram, Anita Verma-Lallian wrote,”We are so excited to share that we bought a home in Los Angeles earlier this month! Our agent, @brooke.elliott.laurinkus, said she had an amazing “off-market” property that she really wanted us to see. The moment I walked into the home, I absolutely fell in love with the features, especially the view of the Pacific Ocean. We knew it was “the one” and decided to write an offer on it immediately.”

“As a real estate developer myself, I believe every property has a history that we may or may not know about, and every home carries the energy that the current owner brings to it. I am Hindu, and it’s customary to do a blessing and prayer anytime you buy a new home. We were so lucky to have our Panditji from Arizona come to the house to do the blessing. We chose to honor the positive aspects of the previous owner’s life, his immense talent, and all the joy he brought to so many people. The decision to purchase the home had nothing to do with the previous owner, just our love of the home,” the post further wrote.

Beyonce leads Grammy nominations with ‘Cowboy Carter’

Beyonce leads Grammy nominations with 'Cowboy Carter'

Superstar singer Beyonce topped the list of Grammy Award contenders unveiled on Friday, earning 11 nods including an album of the year nomination for her venture into country music, ‘Cowboy Carter’.

To Read Lifestyle Stories in Urdu- Click Here

Behind Beyonce, Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, Kendrick Lamar and Post Malone tied with seven nominations each. Pop phenomenon Taylor Swift and newcomers Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter scored six each.

Beyonce’s nominations brought her career total to 99, more than any other artist. She had been tied for the lead with her husband, rapper Jay-Z, who has 88.

Women dominated the album of the year category, the top Grammy honour.

Despite her lifetime lead in nominations, and an unrivaled 32 wins, Beyonce has never taken home the album trophy. Jay-Z called out that fact at the last Grammys ceremony, arguing that voters had failed to give proper recognition to Black artists.

Swift has won the top prize four times and is in the running again with her breakup album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’.

At the awards ceremony on February 2, Beyonce and Swift records will compete with Carpenter’s ‘Short n’ Sweet’, ‘Brat’ from Charli XCX, Eilish’s ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’, and Roan’s ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’.

The nominated male artists were Andre 3000 with ‘New Blue Sun’ and jazz artist Jacob Collier for ‘Djesse Vol. 4’.

Winners will be chosen by the roughly 13,000 singers, songwriters, producers, engineers and others who make up the Recording Academy. The organization has taken steps to diversify its ranks and said 38% were people of colour, a 65% increase since 2019.

‘Cowboy Carter’ was viewed by experts and fans as a reclamation and homage to an overlooked legacy of Black Americans within country music and culture. It became the first album by a Black woman to land at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart when it was released last spring.

The Beyonce album was snubbed, however, by voters for the Country Music Awards in September.

Beyonce’s other Grammy nods included record and song of the year for single ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’. She also was nominated in pop, rap and Americana categories, showcasing the variety of genres on ‘Cowboy Carter’.

Could it finally be Beyonce’s time to land the top prize?

“I think she’s got a great shot,” said Jason Lipshutz, executive editor of music at Billboard.

It is unclear, however, how voters will view her foray into new musical territory, he said.

“You could tell me that this kind of reaching across the aisle, appealing to country listeners, does power Beyonce to her very first album of the year win,” Lipshutz said.

“You could also tell me that it kind of vexes people and voters a little bit, and kind of perplexes them to the degree that it falls short again,” he added.

NEW ARTIST SHOWDOWN

In the best new artist field, ‘Espresso’ singer Carpenter will face fellow pop singer Roan, pop-rock singer Benson Boone, hip-hop/country artist Shaboozey, multi-genre musician Teddy Swims and others.

Carpenter and Roan are likely to pick up trophies on Grammys night, Lipshutz said.

“Chapell is the more kind of eccentric and outlandish artist and people love it and really, really respect it,” he said.

Carpenter ‘is the hitmaker’, he added. “She has scored three of the biggest songs of this year with ‘Espresso’ and ‘Taste’ and ‘Please, Please, Please’.”

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1960s, also landed on this year’s nominations list.

‘Now and Then’, a Beatles song produced with artificial intelligence to bring the voice of John Lennon to life, was nominated for song of the year.

The Stones were recognized with a nomination for rock album of the year for ‘Hackney Diamonds’, their first album of original music in 18 years.
