IMF, Pakistan, political harassment , NAB, corruption cases

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned Pakistan to take immediate action against corruption and political harassment in corruption cases, ARY News reported.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board on September 25 approved Pakistan’s 37-month Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement of about US$7 billion.

The 37-month Extended Fund Facility arrangement aims to support Pakistan’s economic stability and growth, with key policy goals including sustainable public finances, reduced inflation, and strengthened external buffers.

As per details, the monetary fund has emphasized the need for an effective investigation system to combat corruption, suggesting that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) be made more independent and effective in line with the top court’s decision and called for an action plan to eliminate corruption by June 2025.

Furthermore, the global financial body has stressed the importance of digitizing the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to make public declarations of assets of all government officials, including parliamentarians.

The fund has pointed out corruption is undermining Pakistan’s efforts to bring reforms, whereas NAB is not being provided with accurate data for investigations against corruption. “The government must ensure that NAB is provided with accurate data to investigate corruption cases effectively”, IMF stated.

Yesterday, the International Monetary Fund unveiled new loan conditions for Pakistan.

The IMF in its report has urged the Pakistan government to work to stabilize the macroeconomic situation in line with the loan agreement.

Pakistan’s government has been asked to ensure economic reforms and conducive conditions for the private sector to boost the economy.

The international lender has also urged Pakistan to increase its tax net and slash government spending and expedite reforms in the government-owned entities.

The report predicted Pakistan’s GDP to remain between 4 to 4.5pc during FY2024-25 to 2029-30, while the inflation is predicted to remain between 6.6 to 9 per cent.

Hamas says Israel kills cameraman of Gaza TV network

Israel kills cameraman, Gaza TV network, Hamas

GAZA CITY, Palestine: Hamas accused Israel of killing a cameraman for a television station it operates in the Gaza Strip, while Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera also blamed Israeli forces for wounding one of its journalists in the territory’s north.

Muhammad al-Tanani, a cameraman for Al-Aqsa TV, was buried Wednesday afternoon by colleagues at the Al-Ahli Arab hospital in northern Gaza City, according to AFP journalists.

In a statement, Hamas’s press office called his killing an “despicable crime” and said the Israeli army was “fully responsible”, without offering details of the circumstances of his death.

Al Jazeera, meanwhile, said Wednesday that one of its cameramen, Fadi al-Wahidi, was “injured by Israeli gunfire in northern Gaza, becoming the second Al Jazeera cameraman to be injured in an Israeli attack this week”.

According to an AFP journalist who was present, Wahidi was wounded in the neck in Jabalia, north of Gaza City, while covering Israeli operations in an area the army had previously told civilians to evacuate.

Al Jazeera said on X that his condition was critical.

The Israeli army did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment on the two incidents.

Israel’s military has repeatedly accused journalists from Al Jazeera of links to Hamas or its ally Islamic Jihad.

The network has fiercely denied these accusations and said Israel systematically targets its employees in the Gaza Strip.

Four Al Jazeera journalists have been killed since the war in Gaza began, and the network’s office in the territory has been bombed.

Cabinet approves independent multiplayer market for power purchase

PM Skills Development Company, federal cabinet

The Cabinet Committee on Energy on Wednesday approved the establishment of an independent multiplayer market for power generation and purchase to create a competitive environment and gradually end the government’s role as a sole purchaser of electricity.

The committee, in its meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, principally approved the formation of an Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) which will be later endorsed by the federal cabinet and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan under the Companies Act 2017, according to a PM Office press release.

The ISMO is aimed at gradually doing away with the government’s role as a sole buyer of electricity and turning the electricity market into a multiplayer independent, transparent and competitive market. It will also allow the power consumers to purchase electricity from suppliers other than power distribution companies.

Under the ISMO, a long-term planning would be made to produce low-cost electricity and its transmission besides reducing the power prices and circular debt.

The ISMO Board will comprise the experts from the power sector.

The participants of the meeting were briefed on the circular debt of the power sector.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Shehbaz said the priority measures were being taken for the power sector reforms and instructed accelerated actions to reduce power theft and losses besides taking disciplinary action against the employees of the distribution companies involved in the theft.

The prime minister also directed the authorities concerned to utilise modern technology to bring reforms and curb power theft.

Federal ministers Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Khan Cheema, Sardar Awais Ahmed Leghari, and Dr Musaddik Malik, Minister of State Ali Pervaiz Malik and other members of the committee attended the meeting.

Deadly car bomb 'targeted' Chinese nationals near Karachi airport

KARACHI: A powerful suicide bomb blast in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi targeted a convoy transporting Chinese nationals late on Sunday, killing at least three people and wounding 10 others.

As per the initial investigation, the suicide bomber was waiting for the Chinese convoy near Jinnah airport to approach before executing the attack.

“The terrorist rammed the explosive-laden vehicle directly into the foreign nationals’ car that caused massive destruction and damage to several nearby cars,” say investigators.

Soon after the blast, rescue teams quickly reached the scene, managing to safely retrieve one of the foreigners’ vehicles.

Authorities are currently working to obtain the car’s number plate and engine chassis number to aid in the investigation.

Investigators are now working to gather details about the damaged vehicles.

The powerful explosion, heard miles away, occurred outside the airport. Authorities assured that all airport installations were safe and that flight operations were not affected.

In a statement, the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad condemned the “terrorist attack,” confirming the deaths of two Chinese citizens and noting that another was injured.

The embassy expressed its condolences to the victims’ families and said it is coordinating with Pakistani authorities following the incident.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, directing security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.

In a separate statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry also denounced the attack, describing it as an assault not only on Pakistan but also on its “enduring friendship” with China.

Italy targets climate activists in ‘anti-Gandhi’ demo clampdown

Italy targets climate activists, 'anti-Gandhi' demo clampdown

ROME: Blocking a road to protest inaction against climate change could soon be punishable with prison in Italy as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s hard-right government cracks down on demonstrations, even peaceful ones.

A new security law passed by MPs and facing final scrutiny in the Senate has been dubbed the “anti-Gandhi” law — after pacifist Indian independence hero Mahatma Gandhi — by critics for taking aim at demonstrations by people ranging from prisoners to climate activists.

It is specifically aimed at protests against two major infrastructure projects — a high-speed, cross-border Turin-Lyon railway to France and a mooted bridge over the Strait of Messina to Sicily — both championed by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini.

Salvini, who also has responsibility for transport and infrastructure, is a defender of the combustion engine and crusades against “climate terrorism”, particularly the young members of the Last Generation, a climate group known for headline-grabbing protests.

Under the new law, blocking a road outside the authorised route of a demonstration could be punishable by up to two years in prison, up from the current penalty of a fine between 1,000 and 4,000 euros.

Critics see it as a deliberate attempt to silence dissent by Italy’s most right-wing government since the end of World War II.

But Salvini, head of the far-right League party, rejected accusations of a “police state”, insisting: “Good people have nothing to fear.”

‘Ideological madness’

Meloni’s post-fascist Brothers of Italy party took office in October 2022 after an election victory fuelled by anti-immigration, nationalist and populist rhetoric, forming a coalition with the League and the right-wing Forza Italia party.

The government has since passed numerous laws and measures designed to please their right-wing base, from legislation limiting the activities of charities that rescue migrants at sea to reinforcing an existing ban on surrogacy and clamping down on juvenile crime.

With the security law, “the government wants to charm the part of society that continues to vote mainly for far-right parties”, many of them older people “who are much less sensitive to issues of civil rights, the labour crisis and climate change”, said Anna Bonalume, a journalist who closely follows Salvini.

Opposition parties are up in arms.

“We have never faced such an attack on democratic civilisation such as that brought by the Meloni government,” Giuseppe De Marzo, national coordinator of the Even Numbers Network of civil society groups, told AFP at a recent protest against the bill outside parliament.

The opposition Five Star Movement condemned it as a “deeply oppressive measure that has the explicit intention of intimidating… political and social dissent”.

The bill also plans to lift a ban on jailing pregnant women or those with a child under one year old, and to penalise prisoners who protest against their conditions.

Italy is ranked the sixth-worst European country for prison overcrowding, with 109 inmates for every 100 places, according to the Council of Europe.

“The security bill is a real attack on democracy and the rule of law,” said the Green and Left Alliance.

The secretary general of the centre-left More Europe, MP Riccardo Magi, called it “ideological madness”.
