Steve Smith announces retirement from ODI cricket

Australia star batter Steve Smith has announced his retirement from ODI cricket following his side’s defeat against India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final.

Steve Smith struck a strong 73 runs to lead his team put 265-run target in the semi-final match played in Dubai, but Virat Kohli’s 84 powered India to win.

Steve Smith called his experience playing ODI a “great ride” that was full of “amazing times and wonderful memories.”  He claimed that winning two World Cups was one of his career’s most memorable experiences.

“It has been a great ride, and I have loved every minute of it.There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight, along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey,” Steve Smith added.

“Now [there] is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup, so it feels like the right time to make way.”

Steve Smith said that he is concentrating on Test cricket.

“Test cricket remains a priority, and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship Final, the West Indies tour in the winter, and then facing England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage.”

Since making his debut against the West Indies in 2010, the 35-year-old batsman has played in 170 One-Day Internationals for Australia.

Steve Smith began his career as an all-rounder before becoming into one of Australia’s best batters.

He scored 5,800 runs at a remarkable average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96 during the course of a 15-year ODI career.

Steve Smith is the 12th highest run scorer for Australia in ODIs with a total of 12 hundreds and 35 half-centuries. He also took 28 wickets with the ball and bagged 90 catches with his deft fielding.

After picking up the coveted Oscars Best Supporting Actor award, for her performance as the fixer for a Mexican drug lord in Netflix’s ‘Emilia Perez’, Zoe Saldana, 46, apologized to Mexicans who ‘felt offended’ by the Spanish-language musical.

Responding to a journalist’s criticism, who said that ‘Emilia Perez’ was ‘hurtful for us Mexicans’, Saldana said, “First of all, I’m very, very sorry that many Mexicans felt offended.”

However, the ‘Avatar’ actor continued to add that it was ‘never our intention’ and the team ‘spoke from a place of love’.

Saldana, who co-stars with Karla Sofia Gascon and Selena Gomez in ‘Emilia Perez’, furthered, “We were making a film about friendship, we were making a film about four women. These women could have been Russian, could have been Dominican, could have been Black from Detroit, could have been from Israel, could have been from Gaza.”

“And these women are still very universal women that are struggling every day, but trying to survive systemic oppression and trying to find the most authentic voices,” she explained.

In the end, Saldana maintained, “I’m also always open to sit down with all of my Mexican brothers and sisters, with love and respect, [to have] a great conversation on how Emilia Pérez could have been done better. I welcome it.”

It is worth noting here that Netflix’s ‘Emilia Perez’ stood frontrunner for this awards season, bagging a record 13 Oscar nominations for a foreign-language movie, before the narco-musical got embroiled in the controversy, linked to past social media posts by its star Karla Sofia Gascon, denigrating Muslims and other groups.

Omani Riyal to Pakistani rupee rate; March 4, 2025

The exchange rate of the Omani Riyal (OMR) against the Pakistani Rupee (PKR) was recorded at Rs731.65 in the open market on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

The buying rate for the Omani Riyal in exchange for the Pakistan Rupee (PKR) stood at Rs723.15 while the selling rate is Rs731.65 in the open market. The Omani Rial denoted as OMR, serves as the official currency of Oman and is subdivided into 1,000 smaller units called baisa.

Conversion of 1000 OMR to Pakistani Rupees

On March 3, the prevailing exchange rate suggests that 1,000 OMR amounts to Rs731,650 in Pakistani Rupees (PKR).

To convert Omani Rial to the Pakistani Rupee, individuals travelling to Pakistan with OMR can approach banks or exchange company branches for the currency exchange process.

It is also important to highlight that the exchange rate of Rs722.15 per OMR in the open market holds considerable significance for the large Pakistani expatriate population living in Oman, which is estimated to number approximately 250,000 individuals involved in various employment or business ventures.

PHC summons Govt reply over 10 disappeared persons

PESHAWAR: Peshawar High Court (PHC) summoned reply from the provincial and federal government over 10 petitions about missing persons, ARY News reported on Monday.

“Why so many people are being disappeared,” Acting Chief Justice Ateeq Shah asked the focal person of police while hearing the case.

Police department’s focal person said that mostly people go in hiding themselves. ” Some people have personal enmities while some have borrowed money. “Several also flee from arrests”, official said.

“It means these people are more experts than the police,” Justice Ateeq Shah remarked.

“Police should know why people being disappeared. You people only submit report that the person has not been with the department, there must be more details in these reports,” the court remarked.

“It is a good suggestion, the SHO should submit a detailed report about each missing person, the person’s character, business and other matters should be part of the report,” Additional AG said. “Some people become bankrupt and go in hiding,” he further said.

The high court summoned reply from the provincial and federal government over petitions about 10 disappeared persons.

The exchange rate of the Saudi Riyal (SAR) against the Pakistani Rupee (PKR) was recorded at Rs74.52 in the open market on Monday, March 3, 2025.

The selling rate of the Riyal dropped as it is being sold for Rs74.65.

The Saudi riyal is the official currency of Saudi Arabia. It is abbreviated as SAR, or SR. One Riyal is subdivided into 100 halalas.

The partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia is marked by a long-established and mutually beneficial alliance, underscored by considerable financial assistance from the kingdom.

Recently, Saudi Arabia also extended a $3 billion deposit placed with Pakistan for another year to continue bolstering the economy of the South Asian country.

Karachi police recover missing 8-year-old girl within hours

Karachi police team swiftly recovered an 8-year-old girl, Tahira, within hours, after she had gone missing in the limits of Rizvia police station.

Tahira went missing after Iftar, prompting the family to approach the police for her recovery.

After receiving a child missing report, Rizvia police launched an immediate search operation.

A special team of Karachi police was formed, which successfully found the girl near Musarrat Cinema. She was later handed over to her mother and brother.

The incident follows a similar case in January, when Saudabad police rescued an 8-year-old girl from an attempted abduction within hours and arrested the suspect.

Authorities credited a vigilant local resident for alerting the police after noticing a suspicious individual taking the child away.

Separately, a cop was arrested after a kidnapping for ransom case filed against four policemen of the federal capital police.

A citizen had registered kidnapping for ransom FIR against policemen at Tarnol police station of the federal territory.

“The policemen took us to a flat of Sector G-15 and released after taking one million rupees ransom,” according to the complainant.

PPP Core Committee meets soon to discuss working relations with PML-N

ISLAMABAD: People’s Party leadership has decided to convene the party’s core committee meeting in next few days to be presided over by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, citing sources ARY News reported on Sunday.

The PPP Core Committee will consider over the political situation of the country, party sources said.

The party session will also consider over negotiations with the ruling PML-N and state of the working relations with the party.

The PPP core committee will also review the implementation of the party’s demands to the government.

Party sources said that the party’s leadership will review the privatization policy as well as performance of the government.

The party core committee will also be given briefing over President Asif Zardari’s visit of Punjab.

The PPP, a major coalition party in the centre, has time and again expressed its displeasure over the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government’s ‘consistently side-lining’ them in key matters.

The party used to complain about neglecting the PPP lawmakers in Punjab and in the centre and the recent canal issue has further heated the matters between both the parties.

Party insiders claim that the PPP leadership is frustrated by the lack of consultation on significant national issues.

A major point of contention is the decision to draw a link canal from the Indus River, a move that has raised serious concerns within the PPP.

Sources indicate that the party is prepared to explore all possible options to oppose the project.

Federal Govt announces Nisab-i-Zakat for Year 1445-46 A.H

ISLAMABAD: The government has fixed the Nisab-i-Zakat for Year 1445-46 A.H, at Rs. 179,689 for deduction from savings bank accounts, profit and loss sharing accounts etc.

It will be the minimum amount in bank accounts on which zakat will be deducted on the eve of first Ramazan.

This year’s Zakat Nisab is Rs. 44,519 higher than the previous year’s threshold of Rs. 135,179 for Zakat deductions on savings and other accounts.

However, no deduction of Zakat at source shall be made, in case the amount standing to the credit of an account, is less than Rs. 179,689/= on the first day of Ramazan-ul-Mubarak, 1445-46 A.H.

This year first day of Ramazan-ul-Mubarak, deduction date, falls on 2nd March 2025.

According to the notification, the Zakat would be deduced from Saving Bank Accounts Profit and Loss Sharing Accounts, and other similar accounts.

Banks will deduct 2.5% of the total amount in their accounts as zakat.

According to the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance, 1980, no deduction of Zakat at source shall be made if the balance in the specified accounts is lesser than the Nisab amount.

S.S. Rajamouli accused of ‘torture, harassment’ in a suicide video

Veteran filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has been accused of torture and harassment by his friend, Uppalapati Srinivasa Rao, in an alleged suicide video.

Indian film producer Uppalapati Srinivasa Rao, who called himself an old friend of celebrated South Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, alleged in his final video before suicide that the ‘RRR’ director ruined his life and is responsible for his personal and professional struggles.

In the video, reportedly sent by Rao with a suicide note to the Mettu Police Station, he purportedly claimed, “India’s number one director, S.S. Rajamouli and Rama Rajamouli, are the reason for my suicide.”

The film producer continued, “You might think I am doing this for publicity, but this is my final letter. Everyone from MM Keeravaani to Chandrasekhar Yeleti and Hanu Raghavapudi knows how close I have been to Rajamouli for years now. I never thought a woman could come between us.”

Rao also claimed in his suicide video that he and Rajamouli have a ‘triangle love story’ with the same woman. “He asked me to sacrifice my love for her, and while I didn’t agree at first, I did later on. He believed I’d told people about this, and he began torturing me after we got into an argument,” he divulged. “We worked together till Yamadonga (2007), but he ruined my life after that. He tortured me so much since he became a big shot.”

“I am 55 years old and have lived a single life. I have no option but to die by suicide,” Rao alleged and asked the police to do a lie detector test. “I request the police officials to inquire into this matter and do justice to me.”

The filmmaker and his team are yet to comment on the matter.
