No hope of survivors from downed Australian military helicopter: govt

Australia, military helicopter crash, Defence Minister

SYDNEY: Authorities have lost hope of finding survivors after a military helicopter plunged into the sea during war games over the weekend, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles said Monday.

Rescuers initially clung to slim hopes they would find the four crew members alive, but those were dashed after the discovery of “significant wreckage” from the aircraft, Marles said.

The chopper had been taking part in the large-scale Talisman Sabre exercise, which brings together 30,000 military personnel from Australia, the United States and several other nations.

It plunged into the water near the Whitsunday Islands while taking part in a nighttime operation.

“There was a catastrophic impact, and that forms part of why we are now transferring this from an activity of search and rescue, to one of recovery,” Marles told reporters.

Militaries from at least three nations had joined police in looking for the crew of the MRH-90 Taipan, which went down late Friday night in subtropical waters off the northeast coast of Australia.

“The loss of these four men is as significant and meaningful as the loss of anyone who has worn our nation’s uniform,” Marles said, adding he was “deeply sorry” for their families.

“Amidst the inadequacy of these words, I want them to know they stand in the warm embrace of the entire nation.”

Troubled fleet

Australia’s fleet of more than 40 Taipan helicopters — which were due to be retired at the end of 2024 — will be grounded until investigators have a better idea of what caused the crash, Marles said.

“They won’t fly again until we understand what has happened and we have modified or acted accordingly.”

Australian officials have previously complained about the European-made Taipans, citing difficulties with maintenance and getting spare parts.

The fleet was grounded for a month earlier this year after one of the helicopters suffered engine failure during a nighttime training exercise, forcing the crew to ditch into the ocean.

Chief of Defence Angus Campbell said authorities would be doing everything they could to find the bodies and recover the rest of the wreckage.

“We’ll be bringing our mates home to their families and to their regiments.”

Campbell said that efforts to find the four men had been complicated by “strong currents and tidal movements” in the area, adding that sonar equipment had been used to identify pieces of the helicopter wreckage but specialist divers would also be used.

Punjab govt, world-class zoos, major cities, Pakistan

LAHORE: Punjab government on Monday announced to build zoos adhering to international standards in four major cities, including Lahore, ARY News reported.

Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, emphasized the importance of redesigning existing zoos and introducing modern amenities to ensure an international standard experience for visitors.

To improve the current state of Lahore Zoo and Safari Park, the Caretaker Chief Minister has entrusted the task of revamping the facilities to a team of experts.

Suggestions from various stakeholders, including wildlife experts, architects, and citizens, are being sought to ensure that the upgraded zoos meet international standards of animal welfare, habitat design, and visitor engagement.

The caretaker CM – Mohsin Naqvi – stated that an online ticketing system will be introduced to properly determine the income of zoos.

Furthermore, the government has ambitious plans to modernize Lahore’s Safari Park, taking inspiration from the renowned Singaporean style.

The proposal also includes the development of walking parks and play areas within the zoos, catering to families and individuals seeking leisurely strolls amidst lush greenery.

Additionally, plans to introduce a safari train will allow visitors to explore the zoos in an engaging and informative manner, offering insights into the animals’ habitats and behaviors.

Australian army grounds Taipan helicopters after crash

Australian army grounds Taipan helicopters after crash

Australia’s military will ground its fleet of MRH-90 Taipan helicopters after a crash during multinational military exercises that left four crew members missing, the army chief said on Sunday.

The helicopter crashed into waters near the Whitsunday Islands off Australia’s subtropical northeast late on Friday, sparking a search by the militaries of three nations, but hopes of finding the missing crew were fading.

Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, the chief of the Australian Army, said on Sunday that Australia would ground its fleet of about 45 Taipan helicopters.

“We are not flying the MRH-90 today and won’t until we think it is safe to do so,” Stuart told reporters in Sydney.

Even before the incident, Canberra had announced it would replace its ageing Taipan helicopters with US-made Black Hawks.

Australian officials have complained about having to repeatedly ground the European-made Taipans, citing difficulties with maintenance and getting spare parts.

Stuart said the current aim was to keep the Taipans in service until 2024 but “what happens between now and then, from what we learn from this incident, is yet to be determined”.

Australia’s Taipan fleet was grounded for a month after one of the helicopters suffered engine failure during a nighttime training exercise in March, forcing the crew to ditch into the ocean. No one was seriously hurt.

The aircraft that crashed on Friday night was taking part in the Talisman Sabre exercise, which brings together 30,000 military personnel from Australia, the United States and several other nations.

Specialist divers have joined the hundreds-strong search for the missing pilot and three other crew, officials said.

Debris from the crash was recovered on Saturday, with Channel 9 television footage showing a section of the fuselage being lifted from the water.

Stuart identified the four missing crew and said they were all from the 6th Aviation Regiment, based in Sydney.

“You have to feel for their families and their mates,” he said.

New South Wales Premier Christopher Minns told Sky News one of the missing crew was the son of a distinguished senior police officer.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the crash as a stark reminder “that there are no safe or easy days for those who serve in our country’s name”.

He also thanked military personnel from other countries for taking part in the search.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, speaking in the northern city of Townsville, said the United States would provide any assistance it could.

“Our hearts go out to their loved ones during this terribly difficult time,” Austin said of the missing crew.

The Talisman Sabre exercise was paused briefly on Saturday but some operations then resumed away from the crash site.

The Chinese vice premier will also meet with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Arif Alvi during the visit, according to the FO.

Lifeng has played a prominent role in China’s international economic relations and implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, of which CPEC is a flagship project, the FO said.

As the chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (2017-23), he was instrumental in the planning and execution of multiple CPEC projects in Pakistan, as per the FO.

“The visit is part of regular high-level exchanges and dialogue between Pakistan and China. It reflects the importance attached by Pakistan and China to further deepen their “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership”; reaffirm support on issues of each other’s core interests; enhance economic and financial cooperation; advance high-quality development of CPEC; and explore new avenues for strengthening trade and investment ties between the two countries,” the spokesperson further added.

What is CPEC?

CPEC, initiated in 2013, encompasses an extensive array of infrastructure and development projects in Pakistan. The primary goal of this ambitious initiative is to rapidly modernize the country’s transportation networks, establish numerous energy projects, and create special economic zones to bolster its economy. The crucial agreement for these projects’ inclusion under CPEC was signed in 2013, with term sheets finalized during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan in 2015.

In November 2016, CPEC achieved partial operation as Chinese cargo was transported overland to Gwadar port for further shipment to Africa and West Asia via maritime routes.

Since then, Pakistan has received $25.4 billion in direct Chinese investment, which has been allocated to various transport, energy, and infrastructure schemes under the flagship connectivity and investment corridor project, a significant component of Beijing’s broader Belt and Road Initiative.

N. Atlantic ocean temperature sets record high: US agency

On the heels of a new record high in the Mediterranean, the North Atlantic reached its hottest-ever level this week, several weeks earlier than its usual annual peak, according to preliminary data released Friday by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The news comes after scientists confirmed that July is on track to be the warmest month in record history — searing heat intensified by global warming that has affected tens of millions of people.

“Based on our analysis, the record-high average sea surface temperature in the North Atlantic Ocean is 24.9 degrees C,” or 76.8 Fahrenheit, observed Wednesday, Xungang Yin, a scientist at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, told AFP.

The record is particularly startling as it comes early in the year — usually, the North Atlantic reaches its peak temperature in early September.

The previous record high was recorded in September 2022, at 24.89 degrees Celsius, Yin said.

NOAA, which has been tracking sea temperatures since the early 1980s, will need about two weeks to confirm the preliminary findings.

The Mediterranean Sea reached its highest temperature on record Monday, Spanish researchers said — amid an exceptional heat wave in Europe.

The record of 28.71 degrees Celsius was announced by Spain’s Institute of Marine Sciences, which analyzed data from satellites used by the European Earth observation program Copernicus.

Those experts said they measure the daily median sea surface temperature, rather than the average, because it is less susceptible to extreme spikes in temperature in isolated areas of the sea.

The Mediterranean region, hit by record temperatures in July, has long been classified as a hotspot of climate change.

Atlantic record likely to be broken again

The sea surface temperature in the North Atlantic is “expected to continue to increase through the month of August,” NOAA’s Yin said, adding it was “highly likely” the record would again be broken.

The new high of 24.9 degrees Celsius is “more than one degree warmer than a 30-year climatological normal, calculated from 1982 to 2011,” he added.

Since March, which is the month when the North Atlantic begins to warm up after winter, temperatures have generally been warmer than in previous years, with the difference more pronounced in recent weeks.

The North Atlantic has become an emblematic observation point for the warming of seawater worldwide due to the effects of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions.

The Copernicus program, which uses different data than that analyzed by NOAA, told AFP on Friday that it had recorded a temperature of 24.7 Celsius on Wednesday in the North Atlantic.

A Copernicus spokesman said while that remained below the program’s September 2022 record, slightly lower than the NOAA level at 24.81 Celsius, that record was sure to be broken “this summer.”

“At this stage, it is just a matter of days.”

Extreme’ situation

“This situation is extreme: we’ve seen maritime heat waves before, but this is very persistent and spread out over a large surface area” in the North Atlantic, Karina Von Schuckmann from the Mercator Ocean International research center told AFP.

The expert noted that the oceans have absorbed 90 percent of the excess heat produced by human activity since the dawn of the industrial age.

“This accumulation of energy doubled over the last two decades,” fueling global warming, she said.

On a global scale, the average ocean temperature has been besting seasonal heat records on a regular basis since April.

A specific, striking example has been recorded in Florida where waters off the coast of the Sunshine State reached 38.3 degrees Celsius on Monday, according to data from a weather buoy — a temperature more associated with a hot tub.

If confirmed, the reading could constitute a world record.

US chipmaker AMD to invest $400mln in India by 2028

us-chipmaker-investment-India

US chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O) said on Friday it will invest around $400 million in India over the next five years and will build its largest design center in the tech hub of Bengaluru.

AMD’s announcement was made by its Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster at an annual semiconductor conference that started Friday in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat. Other speakers at the flagship event include Foxconn (2317.TW) Chairman Young Liu and Micron (MU.O) CEO Sanjay Mehrotra.

Despite being a late entrant, the Modi government has been courting investments into India’s nascent chip sector to establish its credentials as a chipmaking hub.

AMD said it will open its new design centre campus in Bengaluru by end of this year and create 3,000 new engineering roles within five years.

“Our India teams will continue to play a pivotal role in delivering the high-performance and adaptive solutions that support AMD customers worldwide,” Papermaster said.

The new 500,000-square-foot (55,555 square yards) campus will increase AMD’s office footprint in India to 10 locations. It already has more than 6,500 employees in the country.

From personal computers to data centers, AMD chips are used in a wide range of devices. The Santa Clara, California-based firm is also working on an artificial intelligence chip that will take on market leader Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O).

Unlike its top rival Intel, AMD outsources production of chips it designs to third-party manufacturers like Taiwan’s TSMC.

TSMC and the South Korea’s Samsung are among the elite few chipmakers globally to have mastered cutting-edge chipmaking, a technology many nations are now vying for to avoid supply chain shocks, such as faced during the pandemic.

India in 2021 unveiled a $10 billion incentive programme for the chip sector, but the plan has floundered as no company has so far managed to get clearance for setting up a fabrication plant, the centerpiece to Modi’s ambitions.

Other investments in India include a multi-year $400 million plan by US chip equipment maker Applied Materials (AMAT.O) in June to set up an engineering center, and chipmaker Micron’ $825 million investment in a semiconductor testing and packaging unit in Gujarat.

Elon Musk says Twitter to change logo, adieu to ‘all the birds’

Elon Musk says Twitter to change logo, adieu to 'all the birds'

Elon Musk said on Sunday he was looking to change Twitter’s logo, tweeting: “And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds”.

In a post on the site at 12:06 a.m. ET (0406 GMT), the social media platform’s billionaire owner added: “If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll make (it) go live worldwide tomorrow.”

Musk posted an image of a flickering “X”, and later in a Twitter Spaces audio chat replied “Yes” when asked if the Twitter logo will change, adding that “it should have been done a long time ago”.

Under Musk’s tumultuous tenure since he bought Twitter in October, the company has changed its business name to X Corp, reflecting the billionaire’s vision to create a “super app” like China’s WeChat.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Twitter’s website says its logo, depicting a blue bird, is “our most recognizable asset”. “That’s why we’re so protective of it,” it added.

The bird was temporarily replaced in April by Dogecoin’s Shia Inu dog, helping drive a surge in the meme coin’s market value.

The company came under widespread criticism from users and marketing professionals when Musk announced early this month that Twitter would limit how many tweets per day various accounts can read.

The daily limits helped in the growth of Meta-owned rival service Threads, which crossed 100 million sign-ups within five days of launch.

Twitter’s most recent complication was a lawsuit filed on Tuesday claiming the firm owes at least $500 million in severance pay to former employees. Since Musk acquired it, the company has laid off more than half its workforce to cut costs.

Gambia finds Indian cough syrups caused 70 infant deaths

cough syrup Marion Biotech

BANJUL, Gambia: A government taskforce in The Gambia announced Friday that four cough syrups imported from India were responsible for the deaths of at least 70 children from kidney failure last year.

Health Minister Dr Ahmadou Lamin Samateh told a press conference that there were failings in regulatory and import checks of the medication, beginning with the products not being registered with the West African country’s Medical Control Agency (MCA).

The head of the MCA has been dismissed, he said, while also pointing blame at the supervising pharmacist who authorised the drugs’ import without sufficient background checks.

Beginning in September last year, The Gambia ordered a recall of several cough and cold medications, as well as all products manufactured by the Indian laboratory Maiden Pharmaceuticals from which the adulterated syrups originated, after the deaths of at least 70 infants.

It subsequently banned all products from the Indian firm.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), lab tests found “unacceptable amounts” of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which are commonly used as antifreeze and can be fatal when ingested.

The toxic impact from these substances includes “acute kidney injury which may lead to death,” the agency has said.

The Gambian task force noted the urgent need to set up a quality control laboratory to carry out tests on all drugs imported into the country, which the WHO is providing support to establish.

Samateh said it also recommended improvements to the country’s medical system including establishing a school of pharmacy and stricter regulations on drugs.

The Gambian government is also exploring its options to take legal action against the Indian manufacturer of the unsafe drugs in order to receive compensation for the victims, he said.

In the aftermath of the health scandal, India launched an investigation and shut down the Maiden Pharmaceuticals plant in October.

Early this year, the WHO announced a call for “immediate and coordinated action” to eradicate non-compliant and falsified medicines, in particular tainted cough syrups linked to the deaths of 300 children in Gambia, Indonesia and Uzbekistan.
