Donald Trump says he is not joking about third presidential term

Donald Trump, US president, third term

Republican President Donald Trump said on Sunday he was not joking about seeking a third presidential term, which is barred by the US Constitution, but that it was too early to think about doing so.

Trump, who took office on January 20 for his second, non-consecutive White House term, has made allusions to seeking a third one but addressed it directly in a telephone interview with NBC News.

“No, I’m not joking. I’m not joking,” Donald Trump said, but “it is far too early to think about it.”

“There are methods which you could do it, as you know,” he said, declining to elaborate on specific methods.

US presidents are limited to two four-year terms, consecutive or not, according to the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution.

A proposal to overturn a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress and ratification by the legislatures of three-fourths of the 50 US states.

Some Trump allies have floated the idea of keeping Trump in the White House beyond 2028, and the president has also brought up the idea on a number of occasions in a manner that seemed to poke at his political opponents.

Donald Trump, who at 78 was the oldest US president at the time of his inauguration, would be 82 if he took on another four-year term following the November 2028 election.

George Washington in 1796 set the precedent for a two-term presidency, a self-imposed limit that was observed by most US presidents for more than 140 years until Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940.

Roosevelt, a Democrat who was president during the Great Depression and World War 2, broke tradition and served a third term, then died months into his fourth term in 1945. This paved the way for the amendment on term limits in 1951.

Longtime Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon said in a March 19 interview with NewsNation that he believes Trump will run again in 2028. Bannon said he and others are looking into ways to make that happen, including examining the definition of a term limit.

Hamas agrees to Gaza ceasefire proposal, the group’s chief says

Hamas Gaza ceasefire proposal

Hamas has agreed to a Gaza ceasefire proposal it received two days ago from mediators Egypt and Qatar, the Palestinian group’s chief said on Saturday.

“Two days ago, we received a proposal from the mediators in Egypt and Qatar. We dealt with it positively and accepted it,” Khalil al-Hayya said in a televised speech.

“We hope that the (Israeli) occupation will not undermine (it),” said Hayya, who leads the Hamas negotiating team in indirect talks aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Hamas-Israel war in Gaza that erupted in October 2023.

Security sources told Reuters on Thursday that Egypt had received positive indications from Israel over a new ceasefire proposal that would include a transitional phase.

The proposal suggests Hamas release five of the Israeli hostages it is holding each week, the sources said.

The Israeli prime minister’s office said it had held a series of consultations according to the proposal that was received from the mediators, and that Israel had conveyed to the mediators a counter-proposal in full coordination with the United States.

Reuters asked the prime minister’s office if it had also agreed to the ceasefire proposal but it did not immediately respond.

PHASED CEASEFIRE

The first phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into force on Jan. 19 after 15 months of war and involved a halt to fighting, the release of some of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas, and the freeing of some Palestinian prisoners.

Phase two of the three-phase deal is intended to focus on agreements on the release of the remaining hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Hamas says any proposals must allow the launch of the second phase, while Israel has offered to expand the first 42-day phase.

In response to calls on Hamas to disarm by Israel and the United States, Hayya said the group’s arsenal was a red line and that it would not disarm as long as the “Israeli” occupation exists.

Israel and the U.S. say Hamas must not have a role in post-war Gaza arrangements.
Israeli military strikes on Gaza continued on Saturday, killing at least 20 Palestinians across the enclave, health authorities said.

The Israeli military said it had begun “ground activity” in the Jneina neighbourhood of the Rafah area to expand what it described as the security zone in southern Gaza.

On March 18, Israel resumed bombing and ground operations in Gaza, which it said were intended to increase pressure on Hamas to free hostages.

It has since issued evacuation orders to tens of thousands of residents in several areas in the northern and southern Gaza Strip, citing rocket firing into Israeli territories.

More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli offensive in Gaza, Palestinian officials say.

Israel began its offensive after thousands of Hamas attacked communities in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and abducting 251 as hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Tunisian startup turns olive waste into clean energy

Tunisian startup, olive waste, clean energy

SANHAJA, Tunisia: In a northern Tunisian olive grove, Yassine Khelifi’s small workshop hums as a large machine turns olive waste into a valuable energy source in a country heavily reliant on imported fuel.

Holding a handful of compacted olive residue — a thick paste left over from oil extraction — Khelifi said: “This is what we need today. How can we turn something worthless into wealth?”

For generations, rural households in Tunisia have burned olive waste for cooking and heating, or used it as animal feed.

The International Olive Council estimated Tunisia will be the world’s third-largest olive oil producer in 2024-2025, with an expected yield of 340,000 tonnes.

The waste generated by the oil extraction is staggering.

Khelifi, an engineer who grew up in a family of farmers, founded Bioheat in 2022 to tackle the issue. He recalled watching workers in olive mills use the olive residue as fuel.

“I always wondered how this material could burn for so long without going out,” he said. “That’s when I asked myself: ‘Why not turn it into energy?'”

Beyond profit, Khelifi hopes his startup helps “reducing the use of firewood as the country faces deforestation and climate change”.

At his workshop, employees transport truckloads of olive waste, stacking it high before feeding it into the processing machines.

The material is then compacted into cylindrical briquettes and left to dry for a month under the sun and in greenhouses before its packaging and sale.

The soul of olives

Khelifi began developing his idea in 2018 after he travelled across Europe searching for a machine to turn the olive paste into long-burning fuel.

Unable to find the right technology, he returned to Tunisia and spent four years experimenting with various motors and mechanical parts.

By 2021, he had developed a machine that produced briquettes with just eight-percent moisture.

He said this amount significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to firewood, which requires months of drying and often retains more than double the amount of moisture.

Bioheat found a market among Tunisian restaurants, guesthouses, and schools in underdeveloped regions, where winter temperatures at times drop below freezing.

But the majority of its production — about 60 percent — is set for exports to France and Canada, Khelifi said.

The company now employs 10 people and is targeting production of 600 tonnes of briquettes in 2025, he added.

Selim Sahli, 40, who runs a guesthouse, said he replaced traditional firewood with Khelifi’s briquettes for heating and cooking.

“It’s an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative,” he said. “It’s clean, easy to use, and has reduced my heating costs by a third.”

Mohamed Harrar, the owner of a pizza shop on the outskirts of Tunis, praised the briquettes for reducing smoke emissions, which he said previously irritated his neighbours.

“Besides, this waste carries the soul of Tunisian olives and gives the pizza a special flavour,” he added.

‘Protect the environment’

Given Tunisia’s significant olive oil production, waste byproducts pose both a challenge and an opportunity.

Noureddine Nasr, an agricultural and rural development expert, said around 600,000 tonnes of olive waste is produced annually.

“Harnessing this waste can protect the environment, create jobs, and generate wealth,” he said.

Nasr believes repurposing olive waste could also help alleviate Tunisia’s heavy dependence on imported fuel.

The country imports more than 60 percent of its energy needs, a reliance that widens its trade deficit and strains government subsidies, according to a 2023 World Bank report.

Fuel and gas shortages are common during winter, particularly in Tunisia’s northwestern provinces, where households struggle to keep warm.

Redirecting agricultural waste into alternative energy sources could ease this burden.

Yet for entrepreneurs like Khelifi, launching a startup in Tunisia is fraught with challenges.

“The biggest hurdle was funding,” he said, lamenting high-interest bank loans. “It felt like walking on a road full of potholes.”

But now his goal is “to leave my mark as a key player in Tunisia’s transition to clean energy”, he added. “And hopefully, the world’s, too.”

In a major casting update, Rasha Thadani might be replacing Sreeleela in the much-awaited ‘Pati Patni or Woh’ sequel, starring Kartik Aaryan and Bhumi Pednekar, reported Indian media.

The development came because the makers of the title were eager to introduce a fresh pairing in the film, and as Sreeleela and Aaryan are already set to share the screen in another film, they have now decided to replace her with Thadani.

Quoting a source close to the development, the publication reported, “Sreeleela and Kartik are already working together in Anurag (Basu)’s film. The team of Pati Patni Aur Woh 2 feels a new jodi will attract attention.”

Nonetheless, the rumoured lovebirds Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela will continue to co-star in the yet-to-be-titled romance musical of filmmaker Anurag Basu.

Meanwhile, Raveena Tandon’s first-born, Rasha Thadani, 20, made her Bollywood debut earlier this year, with Ajay Devgn’s ‘Azaad’, co-starring his nephew Aaman Devgan. Besides her performance in the debut film, the star kid took social media by storm with her stunning dance moves in the hit song ‘Uyi Amma’.

Appeals court rejects Trump bid to lift order barring deportations

Appeals court, order barring deportations, Trump bid lift order

WASHINGTON: A US appeals court denied on Wednesday a bid by the Trump administration to lift a lower court order barring summary deportation of Venezuelan migrants using an obscure wartime law.

A three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals voted 2-1 to temporarily keep in place the ban on deportations carried out under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act (AEA).

President Donald Trump sent two planeloads of alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua to a prison in El Salvador on March 15 after invoking the AEA, which has only been used previously during the War of 1812, World War I and World War II.

District Judge James Boasberg issued a restraining order that same day temporarily barring the administration from carrying out any further deportation flights under the AEA, which the Justice Department appealed to remove.

Attorneys for several of the deported Venezuelans have said that their clients were not members of Tren de Aragua, had committed no crimes and were targeted largely on the basis of their tattoos.

Judge Patricia Millett, an appointee of Democratic president Barack Obama, and Judge Karen Henderson, an appointee of Republican president George H.W. Bush, voted to keep the temporary ban on deportations using the AEA in place.

The third judge on the panel, Justin Walker, a Trump appointee, dissented.

Millett said the Venezuelan migrants had been deported based on the government’s allegations alone “with no notice, no hearing, no opportunity — zero process — to show that they are not members of the gang.”

“If the government can choose to abandon fair and equal process for some people, it can do the same for everyone,” she said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited the prison in El Salvador on Wednesday where the Venezuelans are being held.

Noem said on social media before her arrival that she would be meeting Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to discuss how the United States “can increase the number of deportation flights and removals of violent criminals from the US.”

‘Nazis got better treatment’

During a hearing on Monday at which the government sought to have the court order lifted, Justice Department attorney Drew Ensign said it “represents an unprecedented and enormous intrusion upon the powers of the executive branch” and “enjoins the president’s exercise of his war and foreign affairs powers.”

Millett for her part said “Nazis got better treatment” from the United States during World War II under the AEA.

Lee Gelernt, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union, which filed suit against the deportations along with other rights groups, welcomed the appeals court move.

“The decision means that hundreds of individuals remain protected from being sent to a notorious black-hole prison in a foreign country, without any due process whatsoever,” Gelernt said.

Skye Perryman, president of Democracy Forward, said “President Trump is bound by the laws of this nation, and those laws do not permit him to use wartime powers when the United States is not at war and has not been invaded.”

Boasberg, the district court judge, has said migrants subject to potential deportation under the AEA should be “entitled to individualized hearings to determine whether the Act applies to them at all.”

Trump has repeatedly lashed out at Boasberg, even going so far as to call for his impeachment, a remark that drew a rare public rebuke from Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

In his latest outburst, Trump said on Thursday Boasberg was “highly conflicted” and called for an investigation into a courts system that was he said was “rigged” against him.

The contentious case has raised concerns among legal experts that the administration may potentially ignore the court order, triggering a constitutional crisis.

North Korea leader Kim Jong Un touts AI suicide drones, early-warning aircraft

North-Korea,-Kim-Jong-Un,-AI-suicide-drones

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test of suicide drones with artificial intelligence (AI) technology and said unmanned control and AI capability must be the top priorities in modern arms development, state media reported on Thursday.

Kim inspected new upgraded reconnaissance drones that are capable of detecting various tactical targets and enemy activities on land and at sea, KCNA state news agency said.

“The field of unmanned equipment and artificial intelligence should be top-prioritized and developed in modernizing the armed forces,” KCNA quoted Kim as saying.

The nuclear-armed North also officially unveiled an airborne early-warning aircraft for the first time, a capability that could improve its aging air defence systems.

Photographs published by state media showed Kim climbing steps toward the door of a large aircraft with four engines and a radar dome mounted on the fuselage, and viewing the aircraft on a low fly-by.

Using commercial satellite imagery, analysts have previously reported that North Korea was converting the Russian-made Il-76 cargo aircraft for an early-warning role.

Such an aircraft would help augment the North’s existing land-based radar systems, which are sometimes limited by the peninsula’s mountainous terrain, London’s International Institute for Strategic Studies said in a report in September.

“The ability of an AEW aircraft to look down mitigates some of the challenges of the terrain and ground-clutter returns to track low-flying aircraft and cruise missiles,” the report said.

Read more: North Korea has sent more troops to Russia; Reports

One AEW aircraft would not be enough, however, and North Korea would risk canabilising the rest of its cargo fleet to build more, the report said.

South Korea’s military said the aircraft’s operational capability is not yet clear but its appearance indicated it is “large and heavy and probably susceptible to interception.”

While the aircraft was refurbished from the existing fleet, “Russia may have had something to do the internal system and parts,” Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Lee Sung-jun told a briefing, when asked about possible Russian assistance.

Russia has provided North Korea with anti-air missiles and unspecified air defence equipment, in return for Pyongyang’s deployment of troops to help with the Ukraine war, South Korea’s national security adviser Shin Won-sik said in November.

Kim separately inspected newly developed equipment for reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, electronic jamming and attack systems, KCNA said.

Photos showed fixed-wing UAV zeroing in on a tank-shaped target then exploding in flames. Kim was seen walking with aides with what appeared to be an unmanned surveillance aircraft that resembles the U.S. RQ-4 Global Hawk high-altitude surveillance aircraft parked on the tarmac in the background.

North Korean troops deployed in Russia’s war against Ukraine are believed to have been engaged in drone warfare, gaining valuable battleground experience.

Ben Affleck feels 'lucky' to have Jennifer Garner after JLo divorce

After his divorce from Latin pop star Jennifer Lopez, Hollywood A-lister Ben Affleck feels ‘lucky’ to have a ‘partner’ in ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

In his latest cover interview with an international magazine, actor-director Ben Affleck reflected on his relationship with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, as the two continue to co-parent their three children.

Addressing the contact scrutiny around his personal life, Affleck revealed, “I’ve ended up focusing on this – look, I know what’s going on in my life – and also, really, more importantly, my kids know.”

“We used to have a thing, my ex-wife and I, when they would see something on a supermarket stand, we would say, well, ‘You know this isn’t always true because if it were, you would have 15 brothers or sisters or whatever the number of stories is where they said that your mom was pregnant’,” ‘The Accountant’ actor shared.

“I’m really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids’ mom, who’s wonderful and great and we work together well,” he added. “It’s more of a headache than anything else and there certainly are worse things. I have yet to figure out why I’m an object of…’

It is worth noting here that Affleck and Garner, who were married for 13 years, from 2005 to 2018, share three kids; Violet, Fin and Samuel. They announced their separation in 2015, before finalizing their divorce three years later.

Years after his divorce from Garner, Affleck rekindled his relationship with his ex-fiancee Jennifer Lopez in 2021, and the two tied the knot the following year. However, their marriage ended after two years, when the ‘Atlas’ star filed for divorce from him last August.

They settled their divorce through mediation the following month and it was approved by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge earlier this year.

'Nadaaniyan' actor defends co-stars Ibrahim, Khushi amid backlash

Bollywood actor Jugal Hansraj came out in support of his ‘Nadaaniyan’ co-stars Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor, amid criticism of their poor performances.

Ibrahim Ali Khan, eldest son of Bollywood A-lister Saif Ali Khan, made his much-awaited film debut with Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment’s ‘Nadaaniyan’, co-starring Khushi Kapoor, in her second release of the year.

Young film director Shauna Gautam’s debut feature, also featuring veteran actors Suniel Shetty, Dia Mirza, Mahima Chaudhary and Jugal Hansraj, opened to largely negative reviews, ever since it started streaming on Netflix earlier this month.

The title majorly garnered underwhelming reviews for the ‘unpolished’ acting chops of the lead actors, who also made it to numerous meme pages and were ridiculed on social media for their disappointing performances.

Amid this, Hansraj, who essays Dr Sanjay Mehta, father of Khan’s character Arjun, in the film, has come out in support of young star kids, slamming the ‘personal attacks’ on them.

In his new interview, the ‘Mohabbatein’ actor said, “Criticism should be constructive. If somebody who knows about cinema or has some experience in the field, has a show or an article where they write about what worked and what didn’t, that’s something one can learn from.”

“But on social media, I’ve noticed that there are a lot of personal attacks, which are not criticism. It’s just being silly and petty,” he added. “Who am I to say it’s bad? I just say it didn’t work for me or I didn’t connect with it. But some people proclaim as if they know everything.”

Also Read: Ibrahim Ali Khan threatens Pakistani film critic after ‘Nadaaniyan’ review

Hansraj also noted, “In the ’80s, many actors started off new with their first films, but there was no social media, so they were given space and time to grow and improve. There was equal awkwardness in all of us when we started off, but because of the lack of social media, there wasn’t this unfair scrutiny.”

“Now, unfortunately, young actors – not just these two, but many others – are under intense spotlight… Personal attacks are not cool. If you have something constructive to say, please say it. That kind of feedback helps actors learn and improve. But personal attacks about appearance get murky and messy,” he concluded and maintained that he is not a supporter of this kind of criticism.

Bird flu spreads to mammals, fears of human transmission

bird flu spreads mammals

Highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, has increasingly spread to mammals and infected hundreds of people, raising concerns that it may lead to human-to-human transmission and turn into a new pandemic.

Cases of the disease in mammals have mostly been detected in the Americas and Europe.

Sheep were added to the list on Monday with the UK government announcing a first case had been detected at a farm in northern England.

Some of the mammals such as dairy cows and sheep are farmed and so interact closely with humans, increasing the threat of transmission, while others have much less contact with people.

Pigs represent a particular concern for the spread of bird flu because they can become co-infected with bird and human viruses, which could swap genes to form a new, more dangerous virus that can more easily infect humans.

According to FIR, Armaghan’s team consisted of 25 individuals, each of whom would scam at least five people per day. The suspect had also established a company in the United States with his father’s help to facilitate the hawala/hundi business.

The authorities have recovered three luxury cars worth millions of rupees from Armaghan’s possession, and it is reported that he had sold five more cars.

Earlier on Saturday, Armaghan refused to confess the crime after which the court dismissed petition for confessional statement under section 164.

He was produced before the Judicial Magistrate-South’s court for confessional statement in Mustafa Amir murder case. Court said that the statement under 164 could not be recorded owing to the mental condition of the accused.

Armaghan in his statement said that he killed Mustafa Amir over personal dispute. “I didn’t pre-plan the murder,” he said. “It was a sudden act,” Armaghan stated.

“You will be sent to jail if you confess the crime or not,” the court said.

“I don’t want confess any crime,” accused Armaghan said. “Police has used ‘black magic’ on me, owing to which I feel pain in the body,” accused said.

“I didn’t kill Mustafa Amir, left him in the car only to set the front portion of the vehicle on fire,” he said. “I had left the matter of Mustafa Amir to God,” he said.

After a while, accused said that he didn’t directly kill the victim. “It was in his fate to die, I had a little part in it,” Armaghan added.

Mustafa Amir was kidnapped and allegedly murdered by his friends in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) on January 06. According to the police, the youth’s friends stuffed his body in the trunk of his car and torched it in the Hub area of Balochistan.

The case has garnered widespread attention, with recent updates shedding light on the prime suspect, Armaghan. Investigators have uncovered details regarding his business dealings, digital currency accounts, and other activities.

US delegation aims for Black Sea ceasefire in Ukraine, Russia talks

US black sea ceasefire Ukraine Russia talks

A US delegation will seek progress toward a Black Sea ceasefire and a broader cessation of violence in the war in Ukraine when it meets for talks with Russian officials on Monday, after discussions with diplomats from Ukraine on Sunday.

The so-called technical talks come as US President Donald Trump intensifies his drive for a halt to Russia’s three-year-old assault against Ukraine. Last week, he spoke with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A source briefed on the planning for the talks said the US side was being led by Andrew Peek, a senior director at the White House National Security Council, and Michael Anton, a senior State Department official.

They met the Ukrainians on Sunday night and plan to sit down with the Russians on Monday.

The White House says the aim of the talks is to reach a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, allowing the free flow of shipping.

White House national security adviser Mike Waltz told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday that the US, Russian and Ukrainian delegations were assembled in the same facility in Riyadh.

Beyond a Black Sea ceasefire, he said, the teams will discuss “the line of control” between the two countries, which he described as “verification measures, peacekeeping, freezing the lines where they are.” He said “confidence-building measures” are being discussed, including the return of Ukrainian children taken by Russia.

Russia will be represented by Grigory Karasin, a former diplomat who is now chair of the Federation Council’s Foreign Affairs Committee, and Sergei Beseda, an adviser to the director of the Federal Security Service.

Ukraine’s defence minister, Rustem Umerov, the head of the Ukrainian delegation, said on Facebook that the US-Ukraine talks included proposals to protect energy facilities and critical infrastructure.

After Russian forces made gains in 2024, Trump reversed US policy on the war, launching bilateral talks with Moscow and suspending military assistance to Ukraine, demanding that it take steps to end the conflict.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff, who met Putin in Moscow in early March, played down concerns among Washington’s NATO allies that Moscow could be emboldened by a deal and invade other neighbors.

“I just don’t see that he wants to take all of Europe. This is a much different situation than it was in World War Two, Witkoff told Fox News.

“I feel that he wants peace,” Witkoff said of Putin.

'India has been robbed of Oscars many times': Deepika Padukone

Bollywood A-lister Deepika Padukone believes India has been robbed of Oscars many times and several deserving movies have been snubbed by the Academy Awards.

To Read Lifestyle Stories in Urdu – Click Here

In the latest video shared on her Instagram handle, Deepika Padukone talked about Adrien Brody’s Best Actor Oscar win for ‘The Brutalist’, and said she is really ‘happy’ for him.

However, going ahead, Padukone took a dig at Hollywood’s Academy of Motion Pictures, as she talked about one Oscar win that felt personal to the Bollywood star.

She said, “India has been robbed of the Oscars many times. Many, many deserving movies I feel like just got snubbed. Whether its movies, whether its talent…”

“But I remember being in the audience and when they announced RRR, I got emotional,” added the ‘Pathaan’ actor. “Outside of being an Indian, I had really nothing to do with that movie but that was like a huge, huge moment. That felt very, very personal.”

For the unversed, ace filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum-opus ‘RRR’ won Oscars for the Best Original Song category, for its tapping number ‘Naatu Naatu’, in 2023.

Meanwhile, India’s latest official entry to compete for Best International Feature Film, at Oscars 2025, filmmaker Kiran Rao’s ‘Laapataa Ladies’, failed to make it to the top 15 shortlisted films for the next stage.

On the work front, Deepika Padukone, who gave three back-to-back hits last year, including, ‘Fighter’, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ and ‘Singham Again’, has been on her much-deserving maternity break, since welcoming her first child with husband Ranveer Singh, six-month-old daughter Dua.

Pope Francis to be discharged from hospital, with prescription for two months of rest

Pope Francis, health, Vatican city

Pope Francis, who has been battling pneumonia for more than five weeks, will be discharged from hospital on Sunday but will need a further two months of rest at the Vatican, the head of his medical team said on Saturday.

Francis, 88, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection that became the most serious health crisis of his 12-year papacy.

While Francis will return to the Vatican on Sunday, his doctors said it would take “a lot of time” for his aging body to fully heal.

They said they had prescribed the pope two months of repose, and had advised him against taking any meetings with large groups, or that require special effort.

“The recommendation for a period of convalescence of at least two months is very important,” Sergio Alfieri, head of the pope’s medical team, told the press conference.

Francis, who was fighting double pneumonia, suffered four acute attacks of what the Vatican called “respiratory crises” during his time in hospital.

Alfieri said that two of the crises had been critical, with the pope “in danger of his life”.

The pontiff no longer has pneumonia, but is also not completely healed from a “complex” infection involving several microorganisms, said the doctor.

Alfieri emphasized that while Francis had used non-invasive ventilation through a mask over his mouth and nose to help breathe, the pope had never been intubated during his stay in hospital.

One senior cardinal had said on Friday that the pope would need to “relearn to speak” after battling a respiratory infection for so long.

“It will take time before his voice returns to what it was before,” said Alfieri.

The doctor said the pope, who had gained some weight in recent years after using a wheelchair for knee and back pain, has now lost some weight.

“We haven’t weighed him, but he has lost weight, surely,” said Alfieri. “But, let’s say, he had some ‘in reserve,’ so it doesn’t worry us,” he added.

Huge fire closes UK’s Heathrow Airport, global flight schedules disrupted

Heathrow airport fire closed

Britain’s Heathrow Airport said it would be closed all of Friday after a huge fire at a nearby electrical substation wiped out power, disrupting flight schedules around the world.

The London Fire Brigade said around 70 firefighters were tackling the blaze in the west of London, which caused a mass power outage at Heathrow, Europe’s busiest and the world’s fifth-busiest airport.

Huge orange flames and plumes of smoke could be seen shooting into the sky. Around 150 people were evacuated from nearby buildings and thousands of properties were without power.

The fire brigade said the cause of the fire was not known.

“To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March,” Heathrow Airport said in a post on X, adding that passengers were advised not to travel to the airport.

According to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, at least 120 inbound flights to Heathrow were having to divert to other airports, while 1,351 flights had been due to land and take off at Heathrow of Friday.

Industry experts said tourism, travel and trade would be further disrupted around the world, as flights will be cancelled or delayed due to aircraft being out of position.
British Airways itself had 341 flights scheduled to land at Heathrow on Friday.

“This will clearly have a significant impact on our operation and our customers, and we are working as quickly as possible to update them on their travel options for the next 24 hours and beyond,” it said.

The fire forced planes to divert around the world.

Qantas Airways sent its flight from Perth to Paris, a United Airlines New York flight headed to Shannon, Ireland and a United Airlines flight from San Francisco was due to land in Washington, D.C. rather than London.

Some flights from the U.S. were turning around mid-air and returning to their point of departure.

“Heathrow is one of the major hubs of the world,” said Ian Petchenik, spokesman for FlightRadar24. “This is going to disrupt airlines’ operations around the world.”
77 airlines have a total of 669 flights scheduled to land at Heathrow Airport on Friday. British Airways has 341 flights alone.

77 airlines have a total of 669 flights scheduled to land at Heathrow Airport on Friday. British Airways has 341 flights alone.

CHAOTIC DAYS AHEAD

Travel experts said the disruption would extend far beyond Heathrow Airlines’ carefully choreographed networks depend on airplanes and crews being in specific locations at specific times. Dozens of air carriers will have to hurriedly reconfigure their networks to move planes and crews around.

“The other question is, ‘What will airlines do to deal with the backlog of passengers?'”, said travel industry analyst Henry Harteveldt with Atmosphere Research Group. “It’s going to be a chaotic couple of days.”

Some passengers turned to social media. Adrian Spender, who works at British retailer Tesco, said in a post on X that he was on an Airbus A380 that had been headed for Heathrow.

“#Heathrow no idea where we are going yet. Currently over Austria.”

Heathrow, and London’s other major airports, have been hit by outages in the past in recent years, most recently by an automated gate failure and an air traffic system meltdown, both in 2023.

A Heathrow spokesperson told Reuters in an email that there was no clarity on when power would be restored, and they expected significant disruption over the coming days.

On the ground in London, a number of homes and businesses were without power. “Firefighters have led 29 people to safety from neighbouring properties, and as a precaution, a 200-metre cordon has been established, with around 150 people evacuated,” the fire brigade said.

Mahmoud Khalil calls himself political prisoner after US immigration arrest

Khalil-Mahmoud,-Palestinian-student,-US-political-prisoner

Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University Palestinian graduate student who the Trump administration is seeking to deport for his role in pro-Palestinian protests, called himself a political prisoner on Tuesday, in his first direct comments since his detention.

The detention of Khalil, a US permanent resident, has been condemned by multiple human rights groups as an assault on free speech and due process. Over 100 Democratic lawmakers from the US House of Representatives have questioned the detention’s legality in a letter, opens new tab to the administration of Republican President Donald Trump.

Justice Department lawyers say Mahmoud Khalil, 30, was subject to deportation because Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined his US presence could have “adverse foreign policy consequences.”

Khalil’s case could test where courts draw the line between protected speech guaranteed to citizens and non-citizens alike under the US Constitution’s First Amendment, and the executive branch’s view that some protests can undermine foreign policy.

“My name is Mahmoud Khalil and I am a political prisoner,” Khalil said in a letter, opens new tab made public on Tuesday.

“My arrest was a direct consequence of exercising my right to free speech as I advocated for a free Palestine and an end to the genocide in Gaza, which resumed in full force Monday night,” Mahmoud Khalil said in the letter, referring to the latest renewed Israeli strikes on Gaza that local authorities said killed over 400 Palestinians.

Khalil’s lawyers have urged that he be released immediately. Mahmoud Khalil became a US lawful permanent resident last year. His wife is eight months pregnant.

His March 8 arrest sparked protests in different US cities, including in New York City on Tuesday when hundreds gathered at Times Square demanding his release.

Trump has vowed to deport pro-Palestinian activists who took part in protests on US college campuses against Israel’s war in Gaza following an October 2023 Hamas attack.

Trump has alleged the protesters are antisemitic and support Hamas.

Pro-Palestinian advocates, including some Jewish groups, say their criticism of Israel’s assault on Gaza is wrongly conflated with antisemitism by their critics while their support for Palestinian rights is conflated with support for Hamas. Khalil said in Tuesday’s letter his arrest was indicative of anti-Palestinian racism.

The government has not elaborated how Khalil could harm U.S. foreign policy. Trump, without evidence, has accused him of supporting Hamas. Khalil’s legal team says he has no links to Hamas.

Canada reviews fighter deal, says it relies on US too much for security

Canada-US-fighter-jets-security

Canada is looking for possible alternatives to its deal to buy US fighter jets in part because it relies too much on the United States for security, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday.

Carney made the comments just days after ordering a review of a C$19-billion ($13.29 billion) contract for 88 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin (LMT.N), opens new tab. Canada is locked in a trade war with the United States.

Canada’s defense ministry says the contract remains in place and Ottawa has made a legal commitment of funds for the first 16 F-35 aircraft. Carney made clear Canada would seriously look elsewhere.

“It is clear that our security relationship … is too focused on the United States. We must diversify,” he told reporters during a visit to London, noting that Canada spent about 80% of its defense budget on American weapons.

“Given the need for value for money, given the possibility of having substantial production of alternative aircraft in Canada … it’s prudent and in the interest of Canada to review those options,” he said.

Carney did not mention specific firms. Sweden’s Saab (SAABb.ST), opens new tab, which lost out on the fighter jet contract to Lockheed Martin, had promised to assemble its planes in Canada.

Canadian firms also benefit from the relationship. Bombardier (BBDb.TO), opens new tab CEO Eric Martel said he was concerned Washington could target the planemaker’s US contracts if Canada canceled the Lockheed Martin deal.

President Donald Trump has slapped tariffs on Canada and mused about turning it into the 51st state.

Philippe Lagasse, a professor at Carleton University who specializes in procurement, said buying 16 F-35s and then adding another jet would be expensive.

Canada, pressured by successive US administrations to increase defense spending, last year pledged billions more for the armed forces and said military expenditures would be closer to the NATO target by 2030.

In a statement, Lockheed Martin said it valued its ties with Canada and referred procurement questions to the government.

The US Defense Department did not respond to a request for comment.

US CUT OFF INTELLIGENCE SHARING WITH UKRAINE

Washington this month briefly cut off intelligence sharing and weapons shipments to Ukraine, raising questions about the potential perils of becoming too dependent on U.S. systems.

Canada and other allies are largely dependent on the United States for other support, such as the ability to identify targets, process data and suppress enemy air defenses.

“There are a lot of people rethinking right now, ‘How reliable is access to American military technology going to be?'” said David Perry, a defense expert who serves as president of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute think tank.

“All of the options, beyond sticking with our status quo plans, are much less good.”
Canada signed the F-35 deal in 2023 and said it expected the first plane to be delivered in 2026.

Ottawa has repeatedly extended the lifespan of its fleet of Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab CF-18 fighters, some of which are more than 40 years old. They are due to fly to 2032, the point at which all 88 F-35s are supposed to be operational.

Moves by European nations to boost defense spending could be beneficial since they might open the possibility of more work for Canadian firms, Carney said.

Judge demands answers of Trump administration in Venezuela deportation case

Trump deportation

WASHINGTON: A federal judge on Monday gave the Trump administration a Tuesday deadline to provide details about plane loads of Venezuelans it deported despite orders not to, in a brewing showdown over presidential power.

President Donald Trump claims the deported Venezuelans are members of the prison gang Tren de Aragua, which he designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. The White House on Saturday published a Trump proclamation that invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to declare the gang was conducting irregular warfare against the U.S.

A third flight took off at 7:37 p.m., or 12 minutes after the judge’s written order was published. The Trump team has said the third flight carried deportees processed under other immigration authorities and not the Alien Enemies Act and therefore was not subject to the order.

In any event, all three flights, which each made a preliminary stop in Honduras, landed in El Salvador late Saturday night or Sunday morning Eastern Time, hours after the judge’s oral and written rulings.

When Boasberg asked for such details, some of it available on public flight-tracking sites, Kambli told the judge the Trump administration was resistant to sharing information because there was “a lot of operational national security and foreign relations at risk.”

Although Tren de Aragua is a feared criminal organization that trafficks in humans in South America, there has been little documented evidence of large-scale operations in the United States.

The White House has asserted that federal courts have no jurisdiction over Trump’s authority to expel foreign enemies under the 18th-century law. In the hearing, the government argued the court’s jurisdiction was limited by the statute.

Boasberg pressed Kambli about why the Trump administration did not appeal or address any disputes in court rather than let the deportation flights continue. “Isn’t the better course to return the planes to the United States?” the judge asked.

At another point, Boasberg said it was “a heck of a stretch” for the Trump administration to argue that his oral order issued on Saturday to return the planes was not in effect because he had not repeated as much in the written order.

Several legal experts said the deportations amounted to the Trump administration defying the judge’s order. In the end, Boasberg ordered the government by midday on Tuesday to provide details such as the timing of flight departures and arrivals in foreign countries, the number of people deported, and why the government does not believe it can make that information public.

Monday’s session was prompted by an emergency hearing on Saturday in which Boasberg granted a request by the American Civil Liberties Union to issue a two-week temporary block on Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to carry out the deportations.

ACLU lawyer Lee Gelernt raised the idea of whether the Trump administration’s actions could trigger a constitutional crisis, saying in the hearing, “I think we’re getting very close to it.”

Gelernt further questioned Trump’s assertion that the deported immigrants belonged to Tren de Aragua, saying: “This has been a habit of the Trump administration to overstate the danger of the people they’ve arrested.”
