Brad Pitt’s ‘F1: The Movie’ roars to top of Box Office

Brad Pitt's 'F1: The Movie' roars to top of Box Office

Apple’s high-octane racing film ‘F1: The Movie’ roared to the top of the U.S. and Canadian box office this weekend, fueled by star power and a finely-tuned marketing campaign, according to Comscore.

The movie, which stars Brad Pitt as a Formula 1 racer who returns to the track after an accident nearly ends his career, brought in $55.6 million in ticket sales in the two countries. That tally edged past the $45 million to $55 million pre-weekend domestic forecast from the Boxoffice Company.

Worldwide receipts topped $88 million, propelled by the sport’s strong fan base in Europe and Latin America.

Racing films typically sputter in theatres, according to Daniel Loria, senior vice president of the Boxoffice Company, a theatrical ecommerce and data services firm. The most successful of the genre, the widely acclaimed ‘Ford v Ferrari’, opened to a modest $31 million in November 2019.

“We haven’t had that many movies about car racing that have broken through,” Loria said.

One notable outlier is the ‘Fast & Furious’ action series that expanded beyond its street racing roots to include heists, espionage and an improbable moon shot.

‘F1’ had several factors weighing in its favour, helping to broaden its appeal beyond racing enthusiasts.

The film’s director, Joseph Kosinski, brought the same high-intensity cinematic treatment of Formula 1 racing that he lent to the fighter jet sequences in his 2022 movie, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. Moviegoers who were polled by CinemaScore gave F1 an A rating, signalling their approval.

Netflix’s ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’ series helped fuel the popularity of Formula 1 racing, particularly in the U.S.

Apple also put marketing muscle behind its movie, an Apple Original Films production that Variety reported cost in excess of $200 million to make.

The tech giant touted ‘F1’ during CEO Tim Cook’s keynote address at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, and offered a movie discount to iPhone users. Apple Music also amplified the film’s soundtrack.

Warner Bros, which marketed and distributed the movie, developed a bespoke campaign that emphasised the participation of Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton in Europe and Latin America, while focusing on Pitt in the U.S.

“It’s very much like a perfectly coordinated pit crew in a race,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Comscore, an information and analytics company. “They shot this thing off the starting line with great success.”

‘F1’ represents the biggest opening weekend for Apple, whose previous cinematic efforts, such as director Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, garnered critical acclaim but achieved modest results at the box office.

“The film’s outstanding debut reflects both the excitement of Formula 1 and the deeply emotional and entertaining story crafted by the entire cast and creative team,” Zack Van Amburg, Apple’s head of worldwide video, said in a statement.

South Africa vs Zimbabwe: Proteas score 418 on 1st day of Bulawayo test

South-Africa-vs-Zimbabwe,-proteas-over-400-runs

Teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius scored 153 on debut and Corbin Bosch an unbeaten maiden century as a much-changed South Africa reached 418 for nine on the opening day of the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on Saturday.

After electing to bat, South Africa were in early trouble at 55-4 with the ball nipping around in the fresh morning conditions, but Pretorius, 19, put on 95 for the fifth wicket with fellow debutant Dewald Brevis (51) to change the course of the innings.

Bosch’s late burst provided a first Test century for the all-rounder as he finished unbeaten on 100 from 124 balls and will resume on the second day with Kwena Maphaka, who has nine.

The touring side have only four starters from the side who won the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s this month, with several players rested and captain Temba Bavuma unavailable due to injury.

Pretorius’ 153 came from 160 balls as the left-hander became the youngest South African to score a century on Test debut, hitting 11 fours and four sixes.

Zimbabwe twice felt they had him caught behind, but with no third umpire in operation for the two-game series, their vociferous appeals were turned down with no way to challenge the decisions.

Seamer Tanaka Chivanga got early joy for the hosts with an excellent spell of bowling, picking up three wickets in the first session and adding the prized scalp of Pretorius for figures of 4-83.

The South African youngster tried to pull a steep bouncer from Chivanga but succeeded only in skying the ball to Wellington Masakadza at mid-on.

Chivanga removed openers Tony de Zorzi (0) and Matthew Breetzke (13), and David Bedingham (0) in his first spell, bringing Pretorius to the wicket with the score on 23.

Wiaan Mulder (17) looked in good touch before he was run out chasing a quick single, but Brevis and Pretorius shared a quickfire 95-run partnership in 86 balls to swing the momentum South Africa’s way.

Kyle Verreynne (10) came and went cheaply, before Pretorius and Bosch added 108 for the seventh wicket to put the tourists firmly in control.

Pakistan lauds supplemental award by Court of Arbitration in Indus Waters matter

Indus Waters treaty, Indus Water dispute, Pakistan , india

Pakistan has welcomed the Supplemental Award by the Court of Arbitration in the Indus Waters matter, complementing Islamabad’s stance that India can neither unilaterally suspend the treaty nor it can limit the competence of the court.

Pakistan notes that the Court has affirmed its Competence in the light of recent developments and that unilateral action by India cannot deprive either the Court or the Neutral Expert, in the proceedings initiated by India, of their competence to adjudicate the issues before them.

Pakistan looks forward to receiving the Court’s Award on the First Phase on the Merits in due course following the hearing that was held in Peace Palace in The Hague in July 2024.

The high priority, at this point, is that India and Pakistan find a way back to a meaningful dialogue, including on the application of the Indus Waters Treaty.

To this end, and reaching out to India, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on 24 June 2025, in widely publicized remarks, that Pakistan is ready to engage in a meaningful dialogue with India on all outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, water, trade and terrorism.

In a unanimous decision, which is binding on the Parties and without appeal, the Court found that India’s position on “abeyance” of the Treaty does not limit the competence of the Court over this dispute. It further said that court’s competence cannot be affected by the unilateral decision of a Party taken after the initiation of the arbitral proceedings, regardless of whether India’s recent decision is characterized under international law as a suspension of the Treaty or otherwise. The Court further found that it has a continuing responsibility to advance these proceedings in a timely, efficient, and fair manner, notwithstanding India’s position on “abeyance”.

The Court rejected each of the objections raised by India and determined that the Court is competent to consider and determine the disputes set forth in Pakistan’s Request for Arbitration.

The court carefully examined the Indus Waters Treaty and said that the treaty does not contain a clause to suspend it unilaterally.

The Court of Arbitration noted that the role of the arbitral tribunal in the Indus Waters Treaty is significant and the decision-making capacity of the court is not affected by the Indian move to suspend the treaty.

The court will not stop its proceedings due to a unilateral decision of one of the parties to suspend the treaty and will continue to make decisions on the Indus Waters Treaty.

The Indus Waters Treaty will be continued unless Pakistan and India mutually agree to suspend it. Neither party to the Indus Waters Treaty, including India, can unilaterally stop the mediation process to resolve any issue.

20250627 – Press Release (1) by waqas jawaid

The attempt to prevent the role of the arbitrator in resolving the dispute is a violation of the mandatory provision for dispute resolution through arbitration mentioned in the Indus Waters Treaty. In light of all these facts, the Court decides that India has no right to unilaterally prevent the arbitration proceedings in the Indus Waters Treaty.

The Arbitration Court will continue to play its responsible, fair and effective role in resolving disputes regarding the Indus Waters Treaty.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan approached the Court of Arbitration in 2016 against India’s illegal construction of water reservoirs on the western rivers. India requested the Arbitration Court for the appointment of a neutral expert.

India requested the tribunal to suspend the proceedings of the arbitral tribunal following the so-called unilateral suspension of the agreement, which was rejected today.

Watch: Iran’s Quds Force commander appears in Tehran after assassination reports

TEHRAN: Brigadier General Esmail Qaani, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, appeared alive and well at a victory celebration in Tehran on Tuesday, countering reports of his death, local media confirmed.

Tasnim News Agency shared a video of Qaani among the crowd, stating on X, “Commander Qaani attends today’s gathering of the people of Tehran following Operation Divine Victory.”

State-run Press TV also aired the footage, noting that Qaani was “warmly received by a jubilant crowd” celebrating Iran’s claimed triumph over Israel.

Earlier this month, The New York Times reported Qaani’s death in Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites since June 13, amid Israel’s allegations of Iran’s nuclear weapon ambitions, which Tehran strongly denies.

Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes, while the US bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday.

After 12 days of intense aerial clashes, US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire overnight, halting the conflict between the two regional rivals.

In a similar incident, on October 7, 2024, two senior Iranian security officials told Reuters, that Iran’s Quds Force commander Esmail Qaani not been heard from since Israeli strikes on Beirut.

Qaani travelled to Lebanon after the killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike.

Here are some facts about Qaani:

– Tehran named Qaani the head of the Revolutionary Guards Corps’ overseas military-intelligence service after the United States assassinated his predecessor Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike in Baghdad in 2020.

– Part of Qaani’s task in that post has been to manage Tehran’s paramilitary allies across the Middle East, as well as in other regions around the world.

– According to people familiar with both Qaani and Soleimani, as well as Western military and political analysts, Qaani has never commanded the same respect as his predecessor Soleimani or maintained the same close relationships among Iran’s allies in the Arab world.

Gold at near 2-week low after Trump announces Israel-Iran ceasefire

Gold rates-Trump, Trump, Israel-Iran ceasefire, Iran, Israel ,

Gold rates fell to a near two-week low on Tuesday as risk appetite improved after U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire, denting demand for safe-haven assets.

Spot gold was down 0.9% at $3,338.39 an ounce, as of 0526 GMT, after hitting its lowest level since June 11 earlier in the session.

U.S. gold futures slipped 1.2% to $3,352.60.

“It seems like there’s a good bit of geopolitical risk that’s exiting the market here near term after, of course, we have signs of de-escalation between the U.S. and Iran,” said Ilya Spivak, head of global macro at Tastylive.

Trump announced a complete ceasefire between Israel and Iran, potentially ending the 12-day conflict that saw millions flee Tehran and prompted fears of further escalation in the region.

There was no immediate comment from Israel. While an Iranian official earlier confirmed that Tehran had agreed to a ceasefire, the country’s foreign minister said there would be no cessation of hostilities unless Israel stopped its attacks.

Global shares rallied, while oil prices slipped to a one-week low after Trump announced the Iran-Israel ceasefire.

Meanwhile, U.S. Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman said on Monday that the time to cut interest rates is approaching amid potential risks to the job market.

Investors await testimony by Fed Chair Jerome Powell before the House Financial Services Committee later on Tuesday. Powell has been cautious about signalling near-term easing.

“The bias for gold prices is higher, but we might see a correction in the near-term and an uptick in the dollar if Powell convinces markets that they’re not going to cut more than twice this year,” Spivak said.

Gold tends to thrive in a low-interest-rate environment.

Elsewhere, spot silver eased 0.1% to $36.08 per ounce, platinum fell 0.3% to $1,290.67, while palladium slipped 1.3% to $1,062.94.

At least 20 killed in suicide attack on Damascus church

Damascus-church-suicide-attack,-20-killed

At least 20 people were killed Sunday in a suicide attack on a church in Damascus, authorities said.

The international community condemned the attack, the first of its kind in the Syrian capital since departure of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, and the first on a church there since the country’s civil war erupted in 2011.

Security remains one of the greatest challenges for Syria’s new authorities, whom the international community has repeatedly urged to protect minorities.

The interior ministry said in a statement that “a suicide attacker entered the Saint Elias church in the Dwelaa area of the capital Damascus where he opened fire then blew himself up with an explosive belt”.

AFP correspondents saw first responders transporting people from the site, which was strewn with shattered wood from fittings and pews, with fallen icons and pools of blood seen on the floor. Security forces cordoned off the area.

A health ministry statement carried by state news agency SANA said 20 people were killed and 52 wounded, raising an earlier civil defence toll.

Bystander Lawrence Maamari told AFP that “someone entered (the church) from outside carrying a weapon” and began shooting, adding that people “tried to stop him before he blew himself up”.

Investigation

Interior Minister Anas Khattab offered condolences for the victims and said that “specialised teams from the ministry have begun investigations into the circumstances of this reprehensible crime”.

“These terrorist acts will not stop the efforts of the Syrian state in achieving civil peace,” Khattab said according to a statement.

In an interview earlier this month, Khattab noted the security challenges facing Syria and said that IS had shifted “to studied attacks on strategic targets”.

He said IS had attempted “to carry out attacks against the Christian and Shiite community” that the authorities had thwarted.

Last month, IS claimed its first attack on Syria’s new government forces.

Airlines keep avoiding Middle East airspace after US attack on Iran

Airline-Iran , US, attack, Iran, nuclear attack, Iran, Israel, Iran Israel attacks, ayatollah ali khamenei, Iran Israel war news today

Airlines continued to avoid large parts of the Middle East on Sunday after U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, according to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, with traffic already skirting airspace in the region due to recent missile exchanges.

“Following US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, commercial traffic in the region is operating as it has since new airspace restrictions were put into place last week,” FlightRadar24 said on social media platform X.

Its website showed airlines were not flying in the airspace over Iran, Iraq, Syria and Israel. They have chosen other routings such as north via the Caspian Sea or south via Egypt and Saudi Arabia, even if it results in higher fuel and crew costs and longer flight times.

Missile and drone barrages in an expanding number of conflict zones globally represent a high risk to airline traffic.

Since Israel launched strikes on Iran on June 13, carriers have suspended flights to destinations in the affected countries, though there have been some evacuation flights from neighbouring nations and some bringing stranded Israelis home.

Israel’s two largest carriers, El Al Israel Airlines and Arkia, said on Sunday they were suspending rescue flights that allowed people to return to Israel until further notice. El Al said it would also extend its cancellation of scheduled flights through June 27.

Israel’s airports authority said the country’s airspace was closed for all flights, but land crossings with Egypt and Jordan remained open.

Japan’s foreign ministry said on Sunday it had evacuated 21 people, including 16 Japanese nationals, from Iran overland to Azerbaijan. It said it was the second such evacuation since Thursday and that it would conduct further evacuations if necessary.

New Zealand’s government said on Sunday it would send a Hercules military transport plane to the Middle East on standby to evacuate New Zealanders from the region.

It said in a statement that government personnel and a C-130J Hercules aircraft would leave Auckland on Monday. The plane would take some days to reach the region, it said.

The government was also in talks with commercial airlines to assess how they may be able to assist, it added.

Iran launches 30 missiles on Israel after US bombed nuclear sites

Iran launches missiles, Israel, US strikes, nuclear sites

TEHRAN: Iran’s state TV announced on Sunday a new missile launches against Israel after Tel Aviv’s closest ally the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites.

“These live images you are seeing are of a new salvo of Iranian missiles fired on the occupied territories,” said a presenter on air, referring to Israel. Citing “sources”, a presenter said that “30 missiles have been launched at Israel from Iran”.

Israel’s military said on Sunday that it was working to intercept missiles launched from Iran, as air raid sirens rang out in Tel Aviv and explosions rocked Jerusalem.

“At this time, the (Israeli Air Force) is operating to intercept and strike where necessary to eliminate the threat.”

Israel’s military said it had detected two waves of missiles fired from Iran.

“A short while ago, sirens sounded in several areas across Israel following the identification of missiles launched from Iran,” the military said in a statement.

A similar statement about another wave of missiles was issued 30 minutes later before the alert was lifted at around 8:10 am (0510 GMT).

The US military attacked three sites in Iran on Sunday — Natanz, Isfahan and the Fordo, all key parts of Tehran’s nuclear programme, which it maintains is purely for civilian purposes.

American planes launched a “very successful attack”, US President Donald Trump said, claiming Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facilities had been “completely and totally obliterated”.

Trump has said Tehran must never get a nuclear weapon, and ally Israel has claimed its attacks on Iran have set back the country’s nuclear weapons progress by several years.

Iran has always denied any ambition to develop nuclear weapons and maintained its right to a civilian nuclear programme.

Pakistan draws five potential buyers for PIA including Fauji Fertilizer

Pakistan, buyers, PIA, Fauji Fertilizer, EoI

ISLAMABAD: In its efforts to sell its struggling national airline, Pakistan has received expressions of interest from five parties, including business groups and a military-backed firm Fauji Fertilizer, the Privatisation Ministry said on Thursday.

The bids were submitted ahead of a June 19 deadline to acquire up to 100% of Pakistan International Airlines which has accumulated over $2.5 billion in losses in roughly a decade. Still, following a major restructuring, it posted its first operating profit in 21 years in the year through June 2024.

The sale is seen as a test of Pakistan’s ability to shed loss-making state firms and meet conditions of a $7 billion International Monetary Fund bailout. It would be the country’s first major privatisation in nearly two decades.

Eight parties submitted their expression of interests, but only five of them provided documents of qualification, the ministry said in a statement.

Among the five groups is a consortium of major industrial firms: Lucky Cement Ltd, Hub Power Holdings Ltd, Kohat Cement Co Ltd and Metro Ventures.

Another is led by investment firm Arif Habib Corp Ltd and includes fertiliser producer Fatima Fertilizer Co Ltd, private education operator The City School, and real estate firm Lake City Holdings.

Fauji Fertilizer Company Ltd , a military-backed conglomerate, Pakistani airline Airblue Ltd and a consortium that includes Bahria Foundation, domestic carrier Serene Air and U.S.-based Equitas Capital LLC also submitted documents.

“The government will review the documents and give qualified parties access to data for due diligence,” the statement read.

FULL DIVESTMENT

Once a leading global airline, PIA resumed European flights in January after a four-year EU ban linked to safety concerns, and is seeking UK clearances, seen as key to its turnaround. Industry insiders say the winning bidder is expected to partner with a foreign airline to run operations.

A previous attempt to sell the airline failed as a $36 million bid from real estate firm Blue World City fell short of the $305 million floor price, with concerns over debt, staffing, and limited control.

This time, the government is offering full divestment, has scrapped the sales tax on leased aircraft, and is providing limited protection from legal and tax claims. Around 80% of the airline’s debt has been transferred to the state.

“We’re targeting 86 billion rupees in privatisation proceeds this year,” Privatisation Minister Muhammad Ali told Reuters.

Read More: Privatization commission decides against extending PIA bidding deadline

“For PIA, in the last round of bidding, 15% of the proceeds were going to the government, with the rest staying within the company.”
He said bidders would be pre-qualified in early July, with due diligence lasting 2 to 2.5 months, and final bidding and negotiations expected in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Officials hope the sale will revive the stalled privatisation drive. Other planned deals include the Roosevelt Hotel and several power firms, by mid-2026.

“From the Roosevelt Hotel, we’re expecting over $100 million as first payment during this year,” said Ali.

FBR to ‘freeze’ bank accounts of non-filers: Langrial

FBR non-filers, bank accounts, freeze

ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman has said the body will ‘freeze’ the bank accounts of non-filers in the FY2025-26.

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance, chaired by Syed Naveed Qamar, convened to discuss the issue of enforcing sales tax registration for non-registered individuals and businesses.

Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial revealed that non-registered entities will now receive formal notices, and failure to register will result in the freezing of their bank accounts. However, accounts will be reinstated within two days of compliance.

According to the FBR, many businesses are income tax filers but remain unregistered for sales tax, including factories with multiple industrial meters. It was disclosed that several unregistered factories in Karachi alone are conducting billions worth of sales.

Committee member Usman Ahmed Mela opposed the idea of sealing properties of non-registered entities, calling it excessive. The FBR chairman acknowledged the concern but maintained that this move is limited to large-scale manufacturing units, not small retailers or cottage industries.

Naveed Qamar criticized the pressure tactics, saying, “First you cut their electricity and gas, now you’re shutting bank accounts too.”

FBR officials detailed how many operators in Karachi evade taxes by frequently shifting locations, operating high-volume manufacturing setups on a single plot before moving on.

Committee member Mirza Ikhtiar Baig argued that such stringent measures should not affect small traders and suggested a sales threshold for mandatory registration. He proposed increasing the registration limit from Rs8 million to Rs10 million in view of inflation.

The FBR Chairman agreed, stating that the limit would be raised to Rs 10 million and assured the committee that about two-thirds of manufacturing units are still unregistered. “We can allow six months’ grace period with no sales tax collection for new registrants,” he added.

Australia drop star batters for first test against West Indies

Australia-West Indies, Australia, West Indies, Marnus Labuschagne ,Steve Smith

Australia has made major changes to its batting lineup for the first Test against West Indies, starting June 25 in Barbados.

Star batter Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped, while Steven Smith has been ruled out due to injury. Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis have been named as their replacements, signaling a reshuffled Australian side following their World Test Championship final against South Africa.

Labuschagne, who opened in the WTC final, struggled with scores of 17 and 22, extending a lean run in Test cricket over the past two years.

Chair of selectors George Bailey expressed confidence in Labuschagne’s potential, stating, “Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn’t been at the level we, or he, expects.”

Bailey emphasized that the team will work with Labuschagne to help him rediscover his form, valuing his skill and positive approach to the challenge.

Smith, meanwhile, suffered a compound dislocation of the little finger on his right hand while fielding during the WTC final at Lord’s. Although he avoided surgery, Smith requires an eight-week recovery period with a splint.

Bailey remains optimistic about Smith’s return later in the series, noting, “Steve needs more time for the wound to heal, so we’ll give him another week’s rest and assess his functionality after that.”

Sam Konstas, earning his third Test cap, returns after an impressive debut against India, where he scored 60 off 65 balls at the MCG.

Josh Inglis, who made a century on his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Galle earlier this year, is set to further showcase his aggressive batting style. Bailey praised Inglis, saying, “Josh was outstanding in Sri Lanka, showing great intent and ability to put pressure on the opposition.”

The final Australian XI and batting order will be confirmed closer to the Test, with Konstas likely to open alongside Usman Khawaja. Depending on conditions, Australia may opt for two frontline spinners, pairing Matt Kuhnemann with Nathan Lyon.

US moves military assets vulnerable to potential Iranian attack in Middle East

US-military assets, United States, Iran-Israel war, Iranian Israeli , Iran israel war news today

The U.S. military has moved some aircraft and ships from bases in the Middle East that may be vulnerable to any potential Iranian attack, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

The moves come as President Donald Trump kept the world guessing whether the United States would join Israel’s bombardment of Iran’s nuclear and missile sites, as residents fled its capital on the sixth day of the air assault.

Separately, the U.S. embassy in Qatar issued an alert on Thursday temporarily restricting its personnel from accessing the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East, which is located in the desert outside Doha.

The embassy told personnel and U.S. citizens in Qatar to step up vigilance in “an abundance of caution and in light of ongoing regional hostilities”.

The two U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the move of aircraft and ships was a part of plans to protect U.S. forces, but declined to say how many had been moved and where to.

One of the officials said aircraft that were not in hardened shelters had been moved from Al Udeid base and naval vessels had been moved from a port in Bahrain, where the military’s 5th fleet is located.

“It is not an uncommon practice,” the official added. “Force protection is the priority.”

Reuters was first to report this week the movement of a large number of tanker aircraft to Europe and other military assets to the Middle East, including the deployment of more fighter jets.

An aircraft carrier in the Indo-Pacific is also heading to the Middle East.

Israel launched an air war on Friday after saying it had concluded Iran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons.

Iran has conveyed to Washington that it will respond firmly to the United States if the latter becomes directly involved in Israel’s military campaign, the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva said on Wednesday.

Toddler among seven killed in India chopper crash

India chopper crash, seven killed

DEHRADUN, India: Seven people including a toddler were killed Sunday in India when a helicopter ferrying Hindu pilgrims from a shrine crashed in the Himalayas, officials said.

The fatal accident comes as relatives mourn at least 279 people killed when a passenger plane slammed into a residential area in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad on Thursday.

The helicopter crash left the pilot and all six passengers dead when their chopper came down during the flight from Kedarnath temple, in Uttarakhand state, disaster response official Nandan Singh Rajwar told AFP.

The state’s chief minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, said rescue teams had been dispatched to the scene after the “very sad news”.

The crash was likely caused by bad weather, according to district tourism official Rahul Chaubey.

Pilgrims flock to Kedarnath temple during the summer when it is possible to access the site, which stands at an altitude of 3,584 metres (11,759 feet).

A cottage industry of helicopter charter firms has developed to serve wealthy pilgrims who want to visit shrines in the Indian Himalayas, but who prefer to avoid arduous trekking.

Six people were killed last month in another helicopter crash en route to the shrine.

Houthis confirm missile strike on central Israel

Houthis-Israel, Iran, missile strike , Israel

The Houthi rebels fighters in Yemen have just confirmed missile strikes in Israel amid rising escalation between Iran and Israel.

Earlier, the Israeli military reported that some of the missiles that targeted the country’s central areas were fired from Yemen.

In a statement carried by Al Masirah TV, the Houthis said the strikes were carried out in coordination with the Iranian military and involved a number of “Palestine 2 hypersonic ballistic missiles”.

It said the targets were “sensitive” sites of the “Israeli enemy in the occupied Jaffa area”.

As we’ve been reporting, at least four people were killed in the attacks on central Israel and dozens more wounded. At least four others were also killed in a previous round of attacks on northern Israel.

Israeli authorities have confirmed that at least eight people were killed, over 200 injured, and 35 remain missing following a large-scale Iranian retaliation strike on Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and Haifa.

The strikes, which Iran says were in retaliation for earlier Israeli actions, targeted both military and strategic locations, causing significant damage and chaos.

Emergency services are continuing rescue operations, while hospitals remain overwhelmed with casualties.

The Israeli military confirmed that Iranian missiles struck parts of northern Israel. Tehran stated that cities including Haifa and Tel Aviv were targeted using Kheibar, Badr, and Emad missiles.

The situation remains volatile, with Israeli airspace facing incursions by enemy aircraft, according to the Israeli military, and reports suggesting critical infrastructure may have been damaged.

Earlier, Iranian media said air defences were activated Saturday over Tehran and six other provinces, on the second day of Israel’s air campaign against the Islamic republic.

News agency Tasnim said air defences were responding to “hostile targets” over Tehran and in the provinces of Hormozgan in the country’s south, Kermanshah and Lorestan in the west, Qom in the centre, East Azerbaijan in the northwest, and Khuzestan in the southwest. State TV reported air defence activity in the same areas.

Another news agency, Fars, shared images of what it said was the “destruction of two Israeli aircraft in Tehran”.

Iran and Israel targeted each other with missiles and airstrikes early on Saturday after Israel launched its biggest-ever air offensive against its longtime enemy.

Iran says attacks against Israel will continue, senior Iranian military officials were quoted as saying.

Israel pushing the region to nuclear catastrophe, warns Russia

Iran, Israel, Russia, Vassily Nebenzia

UNITED NATIONS: Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia strongly condemned Israel’s strikes on Iran, warning that Israel’s actions in the Middle East are “pushing the region toward a large-scale nuclear catastrophe.”

The UN Security Council met in emergency session hours after Israel’s deadly air strikes against targets in Iran.

“This completely unprovoked attack, no matter what Israel says to the contrary, is a gross violation of the UN Charter and international law,” Vassily Nebenzia said, expressing Russia’s “strong condemnation” of the strikes.

He accused “Western members” of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal – formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – of contributing to the current crisis through their policies toward Iran and its nuclear programme.

“They have been doing everything to fuel the escalation and essentially incited it,” he told ambassadors.

Nebenzia concluded by urging renewed diplomatic efforts. “Once again, settling issues related to the Iranian nuclear programme is only possible if a peaceful, political, and diplomatic pathway is followed,” he said.

Meanwhile, Iran said the dialogue with the U.S. over Tehran’s nuclear programme is “meaningless” after Israel’s military strike against its longstanding enemy, accusing Washington of supporting the attack.

“The other side (the U.S.) acted in a way that makes dialogue meaningless. You cannot claim to negotiate and at the same time divide work by allowing the Zionist regime (Israel) to target Iran’s territory,” the semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei as saying.

He said Israel “succeeded in influencing” the diplomatic process and the Israeli attack would not have happened without Washington’s permission.

Iran downs Israeli reconnaissance drones: State media

Iran, Israel, Israeli drone, drone shot down, reconnaissance drones

The Iranian forces have shot down drones on a reconnaissance mission over northwestern Iran, ARY News reported quoting Iranian state media.

“Islamic fighters [Iranian forces] in the Salmas border region successfully shot down Israeli drones that had violated the country’s airspace,” state television said, adding the “drones had entered Iranian airspace on espionage and reconnaissance missions”.

Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes on Israel into Saturday morning, killing at least two people and wounding dozens after a series of Israeli attacks.

Iran and Israel targeted each other with missiles and airstrikes early on Saturday after Israel launched its biggest-ever air offensive against its longtime enemy.

Air raid sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Israel’s two largest cities, sending residents rushing into shelters as successive waves of Iranian missiles streaked across the skies. The military said its air defence systems were operating.

The Israeli broadcasting authority and The Associated Press news agency have reported on the increased toll to two, with nearly 40 injured.

“In the last hour, dozens of missiles have been launched at the state of Israel from Iran, some of which were intercepted,” the Israeli military said.

In Iran, several explosions were heard in the capital Tehran, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

The Fars news agency said two projectiles hit Tehran’s Mehrabad airport, and Iranian media said flames were reported there. Close to key Iranian leadership sites, the airport hosts an air force base with fighter jets and transport aircraft.

The Fars news agency said Tehran launched waves of airstrikes on Saturday after two salvos on Friday night. One of the waves targeted Tel Aviv before dawn on Saturday, with explosions heard in the capital and Jerusalem, witnesses said.

Kanye West shows up at Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs trial

Kanye West shows up at Sean 'Diddy' Combs trial

Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, briefly showed up to the New York sex trafficking trial of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs on Friday to support the hip-hop mogul and a longtime friend.

However, Ye was not allowed into the courtroom and left after briefly watching the trial on a video monitor in another room.

Kanye West, dressed in white, arrived at Manhattan federal court before noon while the trial was on a break and spent about 40 minutes in the building.

After emerging from an airport-style security screening, Ye was asked if he was at the courthouse to support Combs.

“Yes,” he responded with a nod. He then hustled to an elevator and did not respond when asked if he might testify on Combs’ behalf when the defence begins its presentation as early as next week.

Courthouse security did not take him to the 26th floor, where the trial occurs in one of the building’s largest courtrooms. As admittance is strictly controlled there, with seats reserved for Combs’ family and legal team, the media and spectators who wait in line for hours to get a coveted seat.

The rapper was taken instead to a courtroom three floors below the trial floor. There, he briefly observed testimony on a large closed-circuit monitor in an overflow room that was one floor below the usual overflow room, which was packed with media representatives and courthouse employees who heard erroneously that he might be there.

As word of his actual location spread and spectators trickled into the room where Ye sat in the front row with Combs’ son, Christian, a bodyguard and another Combs’ supporter on a side of the room that was otherwise kept vacant by a court officer, Ye looked around the room before abruptly getting up and leaving, along with the others with him.

He did not answer further questions as he left the courthouse, walking past reporters and TV cameras and ducking into a waiting black Mercedes sedan.

Meanwhile, in the courtroom where the trial occurred, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, 55, seemed elated and aware his friend had visited as family members, including his mother, watched the proceedings. He has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges alleging that he used his fame, fortune and violence to commit crimes over a 20-year period.
